I do agree with you that overall they produced better singles/individual tracks than complete albums. Having said that, a few of their albums are truly stellar and are able to create such a distinct atmosphere. For me, their albums "In The Garden," "Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)," "Touch," and "Savage" are all incredibly creative and original records. Put on the Sweet Dreams LP in the evening; the songs may not form any cohesive narrative, but Annie's voice mixed with Dave's experimentation really do form a unique musical experience. "Be Yourself Tonight" is an 80s classic, for sure. I think they are a band that you really have to listen to their albums in the right environment/time and, perhaps, listen to a lot before the music really sinks in. Was interesting to hear the mixed reactions throughout this video. I agree with several points, for sure, but I do believe the band is underrated in terms of their overall output. Great video, as always.

Really love this selection, 1) because I love this era in music, including pop, r&b, and rock (though you gotta dig a little deeper to get the best rock from this era); and 2) because nobody else is doing some of these artists and I enjoy exploring these artists I'd not revisit otherwise (you guys have done this to me a few times, and I love you for it!). So cool you guys did this duo. I think we probably viewed them so differently than your age group does today. They were pretty groundbreaking even though they get pegged as less so now, mainly due to their insistence on becoming adult contemporary artists. In the Garden was a big flop (it wasn't even released stateside originally), and after working in Can's studio and getting nowhere, they were about to pack it in. Stewart took what little money they had and invested in a synth and the rest is history. "Sweet Dreams" is a song that says more by saying so little than about any song ever written or to hit #1 (OK well maybe "Louie Louie"). Annie was discovered as the northern-soul androgynous icon she effortlessly portrayed in the music video...I believe this was the 3rd single from the album AFTER "Love is a Stranger" and "The Walk"! RCA was just throwing ideas at the wall until something stuck. I do actually love Touch (a more psychedelic Sweet Dreams with super Grace Jones vibes..."Who's That Girl?" is my standout track from them), and Be Yourself Tonight (Going hard for that US audience and succeeding..."Would I Like to You?" was an incredible lead single...sorry Jason but I REALLY disagree on that album...one of their best even if the Aretha duet is cloying...It was freaking Aretha and they were in awe of working with her and tried to give her a soul anthem). Revenge was a bit TOO rock in that it came off forced, and Savage was the reaction record, which America just didn't get. "Beethoven" was FAR too arty for the US, but I DO recommend you guys watch the music video for that. It makes a lot more sense that way, as it was conceived as part of a whole music video album in which Annie becomes a demented housewife losing her sanity...Some really effective early video work from major iconic director, Sophie Muller. A VERY brave single to lead with, even in the US, and radio said no thank you (not surprising). While their romantic relationship had ceased to exist, their record deals were shifting, while RCA and Arista seemed to begin coexisting in the mid-80's, eventually both merging into the BMG corporation. If you want to blame anyone for the downfall of Eurythmics, blame Clive Davis. He blanded out every artist that came his way, from Aretha to the KLF, as he saw everything as product and money. He'd talk a lot about "artistry" but then tame the artist down to the point all the edges were sawed off. Their last album of the 80's run is their weakest...We Too Are One. Cool album cover, TERRIBLE album title, and the most bland of their productions, with "Don't Ask Me Why" being about the only real keeper there (except maybe "Sylvia" and "Angel"). Annie went solo with a big hit album Diva (her voice could transcend the bland and working with Stephen Lipson of ZTT fame didn't hurt), but eventually she too got super boring. Arista was a huge hitmaker, but when you went out of favor, they threw you away pretty fast (the only ones they hung on to for a while were people like Barry Manilow or Whitney Houston who had brought them mega hits for years and years). Eurythmics may have never made that classic album start t finish, but they did make some of the best popular music of the 80's with one of the best voices of the era. They could have done a lot worse. Thanks for shining a little light their way.

I'm certain Jason would much rather prefer The Tourists, the band Annie & Dave were in prior to the Eurythmics. They were more post punk with catchy guitar based songs. The main difference is that the vast majority of the songs was written by their guitarist, Peet Coombes. I did a video on them a few months back and left links to some of their songs.

Hadn't ever listened to their albums before. I am really enjoying what I'm hearing. They are much more than a synth-pop band. Their "pointless" jams are great. A sophisticated group with lots of really interesting new sounds. The most interesting catalog featured on listography since Dwight Yoakam.

You guys did a great job on reacting to the Eurythmics catalog (just got my mind off of the funeral). They do seem to have an odd way of coming back into the music scene or spotlight. Annie Lennox’s songs were big in the 90S, but you never hear her do too much outside of classical music performance. I’m surprised that she went this route now. I did buy Annie’s ’09 Collection with Shining Light. The Eurythmics, to me, is more like Madonna than Mariah Carey or Whitney Houston. I was surprised at how heavy their sound is based on electronic beats. I could easily match The Eurythmics singles with Madonna’s and it would be hard to tell the difference between the two. I got into the Eurythmics during graduate school’s library music program. Every student had 100-500 music downloads or listens for free. Some of the selections were limited, so I checked out the Eurythmics discography. I was blown away by their engaging electronic beat and cool videos. I enjoyed all their albums. We Are One Too is very good vocally, but I found myself liking this one the least. My roommate was in his late 40s. I asked him what he thought of this? “Yea, I saw them on Letterman and their career seemed it declining by then. He also mentioned Bobby Brown had a similar career decline. Here’s my take: 1). In The Garden: Completely blown away by Never Gonne Cry Again. It had a very cool music video. I enjoyed their live performances of She’s Invisible and Belinda. To me, this feels like they were ahead of the curb currently. It reminded me of Sinead’s Lion and Cobra Album. I always enjoy listening to this album straight through. 2) Revenge- This was my other favorite. I heard Missionary man and fell in love with them. This album to me is very strong to Madonna’s Who’s that girl in terms of the sound and beats to me. Thorn on My side is such a great tune. I love Annie Lennox’s vocals on this. 3) Be Yourself Tonight- What can I say? This album is fire. It’s Alright Baby’s Coming Back and Would I lie to you are two excellent tracks. I used to love Sisters Doin it For Themselves, but the track has worn off on me. 3) Sweet Dreams- This has got to be one of the best electronic/techno albums of all time. The beats are really, and Annie’s vocals make this album an interesting listen. To me, it reminds me of Michael Jackson’s Thriller and Madonna’s first 1982 album. Sweet Dreams is a classic. The City Never Sleeps and Love is Stranger are great uptempo tracks. I went back to watch the Sweet Dreams Music video. It’s interesting, to me, that Madonna and Annie Lennox pay homage in their videos to David Bowie with their stuff. This album sounds the best on vinyl. The guitar riffs for me were also chilling. 4) Savage- This is another excellent album. Beethoven is such an excellent dance track. The music video was alittle odd- but it was artsy? Shame, You have Placed a Chill in my Heart, and I need a man are all excellent tracks. To me this album was very forwarding in terms of look and sound. 5) Peace-17 Again has always been a staple on my work out playlists. It’s a such a beautiful song. However, I thought the music tracks are a little bit odd compared to what both artists have put out into the main stream. To me, I agree with your guys criticism on how Annie Lennox and Phil Collins started down the train of doing adult contemporary/classical. Which is good, but I feel like this could turn of fans of their future music. 6) Touch- Here Comes The Rain Again is one of the most beautiful songs that I’ve heard. Who’s that Girl is really cool as well. The Caribbean Tracks are very well thought out, and it’s interesting for me that Annie Lennox almost went into a “Sting and The Police” type of track. This album also seems like it wants to tell the story of women’s struggles and drug abuse. Again, this album is way ahead of its time. This album reminded of Deadmouse’s Tron soundtrack and David Guetta’s early album releases. 7) We are One Too- This album took a sharp turn. It’s good if you’re a huge fan, but it seems like they totally turned to a different sound. The latter half of the album reminds me of Sweet Dreams and Diva, but the first half is a little bit too adult contemporary for my tastes (I can agree with you guys on this one. I watched their documentary while making this album, and I thought they both seemed not as excited to release this track. Revival’s God, King, and Queen of Amerca is also awesome. Overall, I loved this. This is duo is one of my favorites. My older roommates also suggested Sinead O Connor’s early album releases. I was shocked (she was sort of mix of Annie and Madonna). I could play all 3 artists late 80s stuff and it would sound the same. Thanks for the review! I've had a hard week with several family deaths. This is a great escape.

I had half these albums on cassette when they came out. Who’s That Girl is my favorite Eurythmics song. Ghost does a great cover of Missionary Man. It’s on their EP of new wave covers. It’s worth checking out.

I have more of a history with the Eurythmics than you guys. My mom always liked them and I remember her buying We Too Are One when it came out and playing it often at the time. I also went through my own phase with them in the early 2010s. I bought most their records at that time (only don't have In the Garden, 1984 and Peace) but honestly I think I listened to my greatest hits the most. I had heard most of these albums before recently but still struggled this time around to figure out a ranking - I was still listening to some of these albums earlier today to try to crack some sort of code, I think. I totally get your reactions because I found myself feeling like I was missing something with the albums even after listening a bunch of times. I was very interested to see what you all had to say because honestly I didn't even have any guesses on how this ranking would go for any of you. Did not anticipate Be Yourself Tonight being anyone's bottom pick though! 9. 1984 (For the Love of Big Brother) - 2.5 ("Double Plus Good" IS super annoying!) 8. Peace - 2.5 (I kept listening to this thinking I was being too hard on it because of late career bias but then I would reach about a 1/3 into it and be like nope, I'm not.) 7. Savage - 2.5 (I kept thinking I was missing something with this one - seem to think I felt them same way about it when I first heard it 10 years ago.) 6. We Too Are One - 3 (I like this one better than all of you but that could be my own nostalgia talking.) 5. Touch - 3 (I always feel like I am going to like this one more but especially listening to it on vinyl, side 2 just goes on forever.) 4. Revenge - 3 (It's fun, it's fine.) 3. In the Garden - 3.5 (I really liked this one and kept going back to it. I am a sucker for a post-punk/ new wave sound so this really spoke to me. I think I actually will probably go back to it more. I had never heard it before because back when I was collecting the albums I could never find it.) 2. Sweet Dreams Are Made of This - 3.5 (I still struggle over whether I like this overall more than In the Garden but I think time will tell with that.) 1. Be Yourself Tonight - 4 (Definitely the best overall. It's lots of fun. It was my favourite 10 years ago too so that is consistent.) I still really enjoyed doing this, I didn't expect it to be so difficult though! I love when you bring variety in with the bands you cover. And I am a huge 80s lover so I'm always happy to see bands from that time in any genre.

Annie Lennox with David Bowie and Queen doing “Under Pressure” at the Mercury Tribute concert is one of my go-to’s on KZbin. That Wembley crowd was incredible. I wish I liked the Eurythmics more. I do think Annie Lennox has one of the all-time great voices. I just could never get into a full album by them or even her solo stuff.

Yes they were 'pop' singles' band but their albums allowed them to stretch out and take those sounds into so many directions, such as electronic extended mixes (Touch) or soul (Be Yourself Tonight) or even (dare I try to categorize it) 80's post punk guitar orientated pre-grunge/dreampop/shoegaze (In The Garden). You guys should check out the three albums that Annie and Dave made with The Tourists before they formed The Eurythmics. Quite enjoyable new wave/power pop with some strong songs written by guitarist Pete Coombes. But you'll have to track down the original vinyl since they have never been officially released on CD.

If you were going for an interesting pop band from the 80s I would suggest Prefab Sprout. They have a good bunch of perfect pop songs. I recall Jason picking Steve McQueen for his 1985 list of AOTY

Probably never been more shocked by anything on this channel than Jason putting Be Yourself Tonight last. It’s my favourite. So many hits and hooky and great songs. Probably their most upbeat album. Thought he was joking at first, that’s nuts Jason. Next best are Revenge and Sweet Dreams. Peace is easily their worst for me. It’s so boring and lifeless. Very disappointing comeback. Kramzer nailed this ranking, exactly the same as mine. Though I prefer their previous band The Tourists. Only 3 albums. Check them out they’re really good, especially if you like the In The Garden sound, but only more guitar based. Jason especially would like them

This is the most apathetic I have ever heard Joe during one of the rankings. I only ever bought Be Yourself Tonight, but got rid of it a few years later. They have some great singles, but like Kram said, they just aren't consistent enough. Still, glad you took on this, its interesting at least. Looking forward to a Listography of Paul McCartney, Elvis Costello, Alison Krauss (with and without Union Station), Asia, Alan Parsons Project, Deep Purple, The Hollies. I know the larger discographies take a lot of time to listen to and record, but they are also the ones the fans look forward to the most! Keep up the great work!

Eurythmics were my favorite band in the 80s when I was in high school. I got to say I found this review a bit insensitive and cold. I love their albums. I can’t imagine my life without them. My favorite eurythmics albums from least favorite to favorite is… Peace, 1984, In The Garden, We Too Are One, Revenge, Savage, Sweet Dreams, Be Yourself Tonight and Touch is my #1 favorite Eurythmics album.

But I was surprised to find out that two of my favorite musicians played on the album - Holger Czukay and Jaki Liebezeit of Can. He's credited with playing horns, but I recognized Holger's bass playing on "Your Time Will Come" and got a kick out of that. * "Would I Lie to You?" has such amazing musical tension. I was way into it when it came out. Heard a few tracks from the album back then as well but wasn't turned on much. I like it better now having spent some time with it. * Their last two albums tend toward the mellow side, but while We Too Are One has a cheap and generic pop sound (and not great songs either), Peace sounds classy, sports great songs and has their best lyrics, making it their best album. 0 stars - irredeemably terrible/ the worst .5 stars - terrible 1 star - bad 1.5 stars - between bad and fair 2 stars - fair 2.5 stars - meh 3 stars - OK 3.25 stars - pretty good 3.5 stars - good 4 stars - very good 4.5 stars - excellent 5 stars - the bomb

I get what you guys are feeling. I consider myself to be a Eurythmics fan, but I find their albums weird. The singles are all great, and I really like some of their rare tracks. Their covers and some weird tracks like the song Monkey Monkey, which I guess was a B-Side. But their album tracks, aside from the singles are often just kind of flat somehow. Like something just doesn't connect somewhere with a lot of their material.

I knew some of their hits from the '80s, and "Sweet Dreams" is probably the only song that I ever thought was pretty good. I think I was always impressed that someone was able to successfully make the words "this" and "disagree" rhyme, which seemed like an impossible task even to my 7-year-old self. I gave a few of their albums a skim, and they didn't really do enough for me to try to compile a list. Looking at their discography, I'm surprised they had as many hits as they did, because honestly, I have no recollection of at least half of them.

It’s strange because I am British and I was a teenager in the 80s so obviously I remember them very well: I do know some of the albums but do not know all of them super well and have never been an obsessive Eurythmics fan. I think Annie Lennox is revered in the UK but it was interesting to hear the apathy of your reviews and that’s fair enough. I’m almost motivated to give them all a listen myself and see how much I actually like them: I have to say I do really like Savage which is the album I know best but I’m not familiar with the other albums. It was interesting to hear your views

Well, kinda bummed that no one agrees with my number 1 choice Peace, but encouraged that everybody in the video had my bottom pick (We Too Are One) in second to last place, so that says something. Also surprised by the high placement of In the Garden on Joe and Jason's lists. Didn't see that coming.

this was a good one, because I've always wondered how I could gravitate towards that early 80s synth-pop (OMD, Heaven 17, Soft Cell, Fad Gadget) but the Eurythmics? meh. I think I should check out In the Garden, however. it seems I missed that one and having 3 drummers from Blondie, Can, and DAF, Holger Czukay, and Conny Plank has to be at least interesting. maybe I'll check out Annie and Daves' previous band, the Tourists as well

My top 5 would be Revenge,Savage,Touch,Be Yourself Tonight,Sweet Dreams. When you were discussing We Too Are One I remembered some songs from that although I recall at the time it was released I found it very weak. I only listened to In The Garden once - I think I'll have to revisit that. Never heard Peace or 1984, although I'm familiar with Sec Crime as it was a hit in the UK at the time. My favourite song, though, involving Lennox and Stewart, was The Tourist's The Loneliest Man In The World (7 inch version) which I think was written about me - only kidding. (Not kidding!)

Guys, guys, guys.... This discography is one of the GREATEST of all-time! Seriously!!! I think some of you made some CRAZY choices (Jason - Be Yourself Tonight at #9??? REALLY????) Here is my list and comments: 9. PEACE - here's the thing: there are TWO versions of this album, and you have to find the ORIGINAL version (the re-issue featured remixed versions that ruined the feel of several of the songs, especially "I've Tried Everything," which is one of their best songs in their entire catalog). The album is somewhat of a disappointment, especially when considered to be their big "comeback" - and it failed to gain the excitement that Lennox's "Diva" and "Medussa" generated. 2 stars for the remix, 2.5 for the original. GET THE ORIGINAL! 8. REVENGE - big letdown from BE YOURSELF TONIGHT, but still had "Missionary Man," "Thorn in My Side," "When Tomorrow Comes," "The Miracle of Love" and "I Remember You" - so, about half of the album is good to great. 3 stars. 7. IN THE GARDEN - funny that Kramzer mentions Blondie, since they did share drummer Clem Burke for many years (he was also a member of The Tourists). Blondie was an obvious influence. This was Dave & Annie struggling to find their sound after three previous albums as THE TOURISTS (whom you guys failed to mention, but really deserve mentioning. Their work is overlooked at this point, and they were a decent band that had a couple of decent-sized hits in England, including a fantastic remake of the Dusty Springfield classic "I Only Want to Be with You"). Best tracks here are "English Summer," "Take Me To Your Heart," "Never Gonna Cry Again," and "Revenge," which they would later revisit, but not include, on their album REVENGE. 3 Stars. 6. 1984 (FOR THE LOVE OF BIG BROTHER) - Joe: "It doesn't have a good song... other than the title track..." Well... "Sexcrime," "For the Love of Big Brother," and "Julia" are GREAT songs, and then there's "I Did It Just the Same" and "Doubleplusgood" (kzbin.info/www/bejne/haTUiGiujsxlldk), which is AMAZING. That said, it is a soundtrack score, and the film did get released without using the music - so it is worthy as a concept album to play as a companion to the film, which is a great retelling of the Orwell classic. Definitely a strong 3-stars from me. 5. TOUCH - "Here Comes the Rain Again," "Who's That Girl?," and "Right By Your Side" were big hits, and "Cool Blue," "Aqua" and "No Fear, No Hate, No Pain (No Broken Hearts)," which I kinda like more than you guys. A strong 3.5 stars for me. 4. WE TOO ARE ONE - I quite like this album. "Don't Ask Me Why" is one of my favorite singles of theirs, and "King and Queen of America" and "Angel" are both GREAT. I also love the duet "My, My Baby's Gonna Cry" - one of the rare Dave lead vocals, and "Revival," the lead single in Europe. I do agree the album drops off at the end, but I think it's a great ride throughout. 4 stars for me. 3. SWEET DREAMS ARE MADE OF THIS - A fantastic breakthrough where Dave & Annie found their sound. Light years above IN THE GARDEN and the Tourists albums. Synth heavy - this was the sound that made them superstars. Lots of hits here, "Love Is a Stranger," ""Sweet Dreams," "The Walk," "This City Never Sleeps" - literally EVERY track works. I love "Somebody Told Me," one of Lennox's greatest vocals. 5 stars. Don't see what you guys are missing here. 2. SAVAGE - this is a visual album - and there is a FANTASTIC full-length companion video (kzbin.info/aero/PLDAq2gHCuGHoqsiPWaN776QcTNPow_S_6) that goes with it, and Lennox is one helluva actress. At any rate, "Beethoven" and "I Need a Man" (the best Mick Jagger/Stones take Lennox and Stewart ever did) were the big singles, but in America the third single, "You Have Placed a Chill on My Heart" was the biggest hit. 5 stars - this is one you have to see with the video, it will change your opinion of the work as a whole. 1, BE YOURSELF TONIGHT - not just their best, but one of the best of the '80s. Period. C'mon, Jason, REALLY??? No good songs??? "Would I Lie to You?," "There Must Be an Angel Playing with My Heart," "Love You Like a Ball & Chain," "Sisters Are Doin' It for Themselves," "It's Alright (Baby's Comin' Back)" - hell, that's over half the album right there!!! This is one of those albums you can listen to over and over and never tire of it. 5-stars. Hands down, their best. One of my favorite catalogs. I think they are waaaaaayyyyyy better than you guys give them credit for - BUT this is from my era (my high school years), and you guys weren't even born when these albums were popular, so maybe they mean more for me because of that? I thought you guys did a great video here. I mean, the Eurythmics aren't as good an album band as they could have or should been with a better musical focus. But I like your differing opinions and reasons for them. I think nice, fine, and uninteresting are completely fair takes of a lot of their music. Annie Lennox has an amazing voice, and the band can do some very good pop hooks at times, but the band isn't consistent. It feels like they want to branch out and avoid being pigeon-holed, but their experiments also feel like minor failures.

Interesting video as always but I'm from a place where it seemed every second album track was released as a single. I'm pretty indifferent but am half tempted to listen to the debut based on this video. Eurythmics were hugely popular here and I never really understood why. Annie is clearly a good singer but it's not enough for me to consider rating the albums I have heard above about 2.5 stars. I really hate that harmonica sound you mentioned Jason. Just awful.

There are poor songs but there are a lot of classics and if you cannot hear the hook on “ who’s that girl” then you are deaf, it is a great pop song. Myt akeaway from this is that I should give In the Garden a shot. My mum had a tape of the Sweet Dreams album when i was a kid and played that thing over and over again. I really got sick of it! So even though I thought her voice was cool and some of the songs were catchy, I never really had any interest in them at all. I also heard the 1984 soundtrack and...yeah, doesnt' fit for me. Sometimes I think synthpop is probably more fun to make than to actually listen to. Especially if your'e not into going to a dance party/club, or none has been available for the past year and change.

Eurythmics…good band! Knew a lot of the hits before and some deep cuts. Their early albums are pretty strong, the later ones not so much. Bad Albums (1 Star): 9. Revenge (This album is Eurythmics doing things they should not do. Rock-Ballads mostly. Pretty bad album.) 8. Peace (This is an album. There is music on it. There are different songs. There are vocals, there are instruments. That’s all I remember.) Not so good Albums (2 Stars): 7. 1984 (For The Love of Big Brother) (Not really bad, but I don’t need to listen to this again. Nothing memorable here.) 6. Savage (This album is a good step back from ‘Revenge’, but the step is not far enough for me. Not a bad album, but not good also.) 5. We Too Are One (‘Sylvia’ is a really good song, a bit similar to ‘Eleanor Rigby’, not only because of the strings. Apart from that, not that good of an album.) Good Albums (3 Stars): 4. Be Yourself Tonight (This album contains some Pop-Rock and RnB influences besides their typical new wave sound. Not the biggest fan of that, but still a good album overall.) 3. Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) (Big change in sound from the debut. The synth is now the predominant instrument and it’s a lot more dancy and less atmospheric. The second half is not very good, unfortunately.) Really Good Albums (4 Stars): 2. Touch (This album has great singles and also amazing deep cuts. ‘The First Cut’ and ‘Paint A Rumour’ are fantastic. It’s also a consistent album, only ‘Right By Your Side’ does not do it for me. A lot of great synth sounds on here again, like with the debut.) 1. In The Garden (Great debut album, right up my alley! A lot of great songs on here, love the atmosphere created, great choice of sounds. Not a perfect album, but really good.)

We both have their debut album at #1. On the first draft of my list I had it in 3rd place. But in the last few days it grew on me and took the lead.

Like Savage....the back half is where the really good songs are.
