Good one Ben. If the Eurostar was a tad wider I’d be learning in one instead of the C42. I’d be up for you doing a flight planning video. That’s the one thing I’m most looking forward to doing when we get back to normal.

Ah ok Jed - thanks for your input. I'll definitely get this video together. Is it the planning the route or just everything that would go into it?
@jedwig614 жыл бұрын
Ben Atkinson Having not done one at all or used one I’d love to see everything that would go into it. Everything seems to be SkyDemon these days so it’d be good to compare old skool vs new skool. I appreciate that that may be more than you were anticipating but what better way to pass your time whilst stuck on the ground ;-)

Glad it’s helped Martin. Though some of my calls were debatable here - didn’t necessarily need to call crosswind. I cover this in a video out later this week! Thanks for watching - I know painful for us all!!

Ben Atkinson so I don’t think you were wrong to call crosswind but given they then said report final to land I questioned you calling again downwind - although all your calls were tight! 😎

I think the EV-97 has a lot going for it. It has sweet handling. It's well built. Everything you need to check prior to flying has easy access. The canopy gives excellent all round visibility to the extent that if you can't keep a good look out in it you shouldn't be flying. My only complaint is that the trim control could do with being a bit less sensitive.

Well, if you run out of air related things to do, you can give us a tour of Heart Radio. Social isolation makes it difficult to do anything Aircraft related. Talking about kits, (without mentioning any names of manufacturers) I did build a kit of a scale model of a Fairly Rotodyne. Took me ages to build it and paint it. It was an amazing machine (look it up) but it came at the wrong time and in many way was to far ahead of its time. I would love to have flown in the real thing, but I was just at school when these things were in the air. Never even saw one in real life. I don't think it got much past prototype stage, though I think one did fly to prove concept across rooftops of New York skyscrapers. There is a Documentary on KZbin, or there used to be anyway. Fascinating aircraft, two thirds helicopter and one third plane. Stay Safe.
@BenAtkinsonVideos4 жыл бұрын
I had to google Fairly Rotodyne and what a mad machine...doesnt look like it should fly! A bit Osprey'y! Do you still have the model? Yeh I could give a tour. I'll add it to the list of ideas for videos. Plenty coming up - just won't be quite as often as usual. Aiming for a video every 10-14 days....may be less if i can! Thanks again - stay well
@BoB4jjjjs4 жыл бұрын
@@BenAtkinsonVideos I don't have the model anymore, the first thing to break was the rotors, than the wheels, I put it hanging from the roof to keep it saferls and , but with a brother and two sisters it didn't stand a chance, though it did survive around ten years before I got fed up of repairing it My mother had a mad day of clearing out junk one day and it went. Was a bit disappointed to see it go, but it had to at some point and I was more interested in girls then. Girls and Motorcycles got in the way of a lot of things!
@BoB4jjjjs4 жыл бұрын
@@BenAtkinsonVideos The machine was not as mad as you would think, it was to get over the city to city thing and airport to city quick journeys, but it was at the time the Government was cutting down on the amount of Aircraft manufacturers in the UK and it just suffered. The company was taken over by another, they were blamed for killing it, but in fact they invested in it, but the military was not interested in it and then the fuel crises killed it. They said it was noisy and as the man who was making the most noise about it being noisy was at a meeting about it, it landed outside and he never noticed. However, with no demand it died. Shame as they went to all the bother of making the Osprey and this machine was just as capable of doing what the Osprey does, it may be slightly faster, but look at the cost of developing it! Madness!

Great vid as always Ben... Interesting you are joining up with Ben on Radio work. I noticed on your vid you called "Crosswind" with the only other traffic on the ground. I think perhaps ATC was expecting only a "Downwind" call and I think mistakingly said "Report Final". You then in turn called "Downwind" and he again said "Report Final" The crosswind call can be helpful in a busy circuit, but not as necessary as the all-important downwind call. Obviously, this is a rather petty point... but as you are getting together with Ben... I would be interested in hearing his comment as an ATC officer. Keep up the excellent work.
@BenAtkinsonVideos4 жыл бұрын
Hey Neil! Yeh - you know, one of the tips I have on radio (that I didn't do in that flight all the time) is LISTEN! I was told to report final but gave my position report out of habit in the usual places. Yeh we'll cover this in that video. Thanks for watching - and commenting, as ever! Cheers.....
@heidbummer2744 жыл бұрын
The standard overhead join... should also have a standard radio procedure... unusual to call crosswind on an overhead join, although sometimes can be helpful to other circuit traffic. What I found very odd and non-standard was your FISO saying 'Report Final' from a crosswind call? Ben Wyatt's comment on that would be helpful. Cheers

Neil Tweedie - yeh - interesting stuff isn’t it. I’ve spoken you him and he’s basically said - yeh should’ve waited but calling more is better than missing a call.

Hi Ben, Yip another nice video. That Airfix comment made me laugh. At least you didn't threaten us with Lego :-) I'd love to hear your thoughts on using the I-Pad when flying. How is Sky demon working out? What are all the red circles as you approach Kemble. I'm guessing they are the no fly bits, but why. Whats in them? Happy flying, when we are allowed too again.
@BenAtkinsonVideos4 жыл бұрын
Hey ! Thanks for commenting. Ha - I was serious! haha. Yeh good idea...I can add that to a video sometime about iPad / iPhone and skydemon. The red circles are Noise abatement areas....its not actually illegal to fly over them but its very bad airmanship to. Generally they originate from complaints from people who live in the red circles. Generally they are tiny hamlets or a collection of houses near airfields. There's quite a few at kemble. At compton - I really had to fly accurately to miss them. Thanks for watching!

Another terrific video Ben. Any advice on written/ground exams/revision would be interesting. Also hearing about your RC models and how they helped you with your flying too. Looking forward to ATC stuff too. With full flap could you have been down before the turn off taxiway?? Is the Eurostar faster to land than your Skyranger or the Ikarus??
@BenAtkinsonVideos4 жыл бұрын
Hey great - I can get video's on ground school / exams advice done. And definitely a short video on how the models helped - because they did to a huge level I believe. I always tend to aim for the darker tarmac...I find as its easy to see, I can really use that as a safe pretend threshold to help me get into short places. SO I could have probably dropped the throttle earlier and made the taxiway with just 2 stages of flap...but to answer your question - a 3rd stage of flap would've really helped me come out of the sky quicker yes...especially with a headwind.
@musoseven82184 жыл бұрын
Hi Ben, Good thoughts and comments, looking forward to your future videos! I believe they'll help lots and your channel. Re the landing, good points well made. IIRC full flap on a Eurostar is 60° and the view from the cockpit is like being in a helicopter LOL! I think my buddy tries to get down and get clear (08) as he always ends up with something faster behind him/or wanting to get in before the weather gets worse. TBH it's your finals, your landing, your right of way, take your time.
