Love what you are doing there! Your recycled EV ethos is really cool - the real benefit is that the Cruiser is no longer turning 1 litre of petrol into 2.4 kg's of C02, the resources put into building a new vehicle is small compared to that alone! Pretty awesome being able to turn solar into your transport energy. I am going lightweight/compact flexible solar panels (~3200 watts) into a 5kw inverter with 16.6 kwh of lithium batteries to get some decent range added per day of camping.

3200 watts is full level 1 charging, nice!

Great tour, for a first project it's done really well, the solar with the ecoflow is really cool, look forward to seeing what you come up with for more capacity, maybe hood panels and some slide outs in the back. Using the solar for the 12v is a good use, if you add heat/ac(heat pump?) maybe use the solar and ecoflow for that to save the high voltage battery range.

I remember being amazed when I read about the Land Cruiser in EV Builder magazine, It hadn't occurred to me that a Leaf motor and battery pack could move this truck as well as it does. I do have one question. The magazine quote's the Land Cruiser's range as being 50 miles on the highway. At what speed would it be driving to get 50 miles range?
@EVSwap2 ай бұрын
On the highway I limit it to 55 or 60 MPH. Much faster and it just burns the battery too fast.

Thanks for the full walk around! I missed the blackbox going in, sounds like that really fits the gearing. I had an early 4Runner with a similar build out. Unlike CO, I was in Seattle and everything was wet! Lots of nights throwing gear under the truck and sleeping inside. I'm surprised the CB is still a thing, I thought FCC was shutting down. If you can, keep me in mind if your overland trip comes together. I can at least bring my RV for hot shower at the trailheads... and maybe more 😉 stay tuned!!

Love the Nissan Leaf motor. Been driving Leafs for 10 years and they are perfect. I want to convert my 1970 Datsun truck one day.

LEAFs are excellent cars. Tough as nails! Check out Brat Industries for adapter plates for your Datsun pickup. He loves Datsuns!

Hey there. I was at the State of Charge this year and enjoyed your presentation and have been following your videos. I'm digging the leaf approach for simplicity and trying to figure out my first EV conversion. I am from NH and you also do not need a title for vehicles older than 25 years but need someone to register it in person. Keep up the great stuff, cheers

Thanks! LEAF based conversions are still my favorite!

A simple power meter inline with the 14.6 V line to the 12V battery will tell you what you are pushing into it from the solar . I imagine that additional batteries distributed in the rear would give a better weight balance for off-road driving and increase rear traction in the snow.

I have an 80 series and your project brings me hope that one day I could send mine to a shop to get it electrified. Because I do not know a lick about EVs lol

I know what your saying/ At least a conversion for hybrid that doubles range. A drop in kit for vintage vehicles is a realistic market!

I have an 80 that I’ve been dreaming of turning into a hybrid. Unfortunately it’s getting to point here in Australia where I simply can’t afford to drive it, in fact last year I had to retire it as my daily drive and bought a 2008 Prius because the 80 was costing us up $300 a week in fuel, which just couldn’t be sustained. Now the 80 is just our touring/fun car but even as that it adds a significant cost to going travelling. If I can’t find a way to significantly improve the fuel economy I can see a day when we simply cannot afford to drive it at all 😢

Love what you do. Im still working on my first conversion with a leaf power system but already planning my next. Jeep cherokee XJ. Hard to find a decent manual so was going to take a play from your book and do blackbox to transfer case. Unless its better to just do a manual swap. Thoughts? You ever coming to LA? Would love to see the truck in person!
@EVSwap2 ай бұрын
I think using a reduction like the Blackbox and the stock transfer case is the best option. A 5-speed would give you more gearing options etc, but it also is very large and heavy compared to a single speed reduction.

I'm in same boat, looking out for jeep cherokee xj, not sure how easy to couple up the black box
