Nice video. I had no idea the water pump was behind the timing belt. I had to pull out the plasma cutter to make that tool. Thanks for the tip of clamping the cresent wrenches together.

My water pump started seeping today... going to attempt this job over the next few weeks! Never done any in depth work on my own car like this, but I dont have the money to pay anyone else to do it! Hopefully your awesome video will bail me out of my lack of skill enough to get my 91 running reliably again!

Andrew Hall Taking my time it went really well, I ran into 2 problems along the way, one minor, and one that was quite a huge pain in the butt. First one was the first time I installed mixing manifold that hooks up to water pump I mangled one of the little O rings, luckily the kit I got came with 2 of them just in case! Could probably have found one at a local parts shop if not though. 2nd (bigger) issue was both the tensioner and idler pulley I got for timing belt where somehow bad parts. I couldn't for the life of me figure out why my car was whining so much, so I took it to a shop, and it turned out it was nothing I did wrong, just bad parts. That was a bit of a pain in the but because I ended up having to pay someone to fix something I had already done. But it's better now, was a huge learning experience! Oh, one thing I almost forgot, I ended up needing an impact wrench to take off crank pulley on my car, apparently you can wiggle belt behind the pully and not remove it on most cars, but not on my 91 (long nose crank) 1.6L.

I changed the timing belt and water pump on my '92 Miata yesterday. I could have never done it without this video. The timing belt was cracked and the water pump was leaking pretty badly so it was definitely time! I bought both of the Flyin Miata tools you used and they were definitely must haves! The only problem I had is that my 3/8" drive torque wrench malfunctioned and I think I torqued the bolts on the water pump, idler pulley, and tensioner pulley too much. But it seems to run fine. Also I had trouble getting the crankshaft pulley off. I had to use a small gear puller to get it off. Thank you so much!

Really fine video. With its help I was able to replace the timing belt (water pump, belts, seals, etc.) and got it started first try, and it runs great. If you're going to do this, please watch the whole video first, at least once, and follow his advice to mark and count the teeth on the belt positions on the sprockets and crankshaft gear before removing the old belt! And follow the advice to take lots of pictures and mark and bag everything, even what seems obvious.

On the timing belt i just paint a neon green dot on the gear teeth and belt on all three gears, intake, exhaust and crank.

You should know that when putting the water pump back on, that the right side goes behind the cover plate and the the left side goes behind the black cover plate just above it. If not the idler tensioner will rub up against it.

Prefer to use the factory manual when possible. Not sure what manual was referred to in this video. We do have factory manuals for the Miata.

1:48 Do you know what that bag is that's up against the battery? In my 1995 Miata I found a couple small hoses in the trunk that look like what's in that bag, but I have no idea what they are for. They look like about the diameter of vacuum lines, but that's just a guess. I'm going to make my second attempt today at changing my belts and water pump. The first time I tried, the video I had watched to learn how was actually done on a 1.6 liter NA Miata, whereas mine is the 1.8 liter, so I got stuck trying to get the valve cover off. I didn't know about the two extra fasteners at the back of the valve cover. I ended up just reusing the coolant I had drained. I know that's not recommended, but the coolant looked good as new, and I had used a brand new drain pan, so I didn't think it would hurt.

Love the video. Watch it twice actually. Not sure if my mechanic is at fault but I had my ac compressor change and my belt was "singing" so he tighten up, I notice the check engine light so I when back and told him. He check it with his machine and turn it off!! Told me if anything goes wrong to let him know he would take care of it but after a test drive it start smoking like crazy. Barely had time to take it home. Let it cool off until next day and drain the antifreeze and replace it. When I when back to the garage, he think it's my water pump and want to charge me 625$. I see it's a lot of work but I'm afraid they might mess up my timing. What's your take on this? Did they over thighen the ac belt? And wore down the bearing on the water pump? I just came back from a 400 miles trip before that and it was fine, just my ac wasn't working and over here it was like 115 degree in there, even with the top down.
@ev4u9 жыл бұрын
No way for me to know if your mechanic over tightened a belt. However, it is easy to over tighten a belt on the Miata if you are not careful. I always start off a little loose and tighten just enough for the belts not to squeal. I recommend replacing the timing belt and water pump at the same time, along with idler, seals, etc. If you don't trust your current mechanic, perhaps it is time to find a new one. Thanks for watching.
