Using industrial materials not common to art in the 1960's, sculptor Eva Hesse developed a powerful, influential style, attaining widespread fame and dying in the same month of her short, difficult life. Francisco reflects on this extraordinary artist's life and work.

I just can never get enough of Eva Hesse. I often look at her work when I am thinking through new sculpture problems and it always helps to refresh my ideas, to narrow my focus.

Very insightful commentary. Not since Robert Hughes have I intently listened and enjoyed it immensely.

I completed my diploma in materiality in December 2019. By March 2020 we all were in deep with Covid. Eva became a hero of mine in my study of materiality. Thank you for this sharing story.

Beautiful analysis of Eva's work and personality. She is a favorite of mine too, and you've described her work so elegantly. Love this

Just can't stop listening and thinking about what you say here. I stumble upon your channel while researching Eva Hesse. But it goes beyond her and her amazing cut short legacy...it is inspiring me in oh so many ways! thank you!

"...the artist being there, being felt through their work. Ultimately your work has to stand by itself and for itself. The artist can be absent but should be called back, should be inducted back into the work by the demand of the work to make the viewer question the intention and the spirit of the artist." WELL SAID. Excellent views, thank you.

The photo in the beginning is not Eva Hesse, but Lee Bontecou. Though they both did sculptures around the same time, their work is very different from each others.

Just a question: Why is there the photograph/vid of Lee Bontecou's studio in this film about Eva?. Or am I mistaken? the one with the WIP welded metal piece.

Nice piece! I like what you are saying..There is someone who comes to mind when I look at the work of Hesse, and it's Louise Bourgeois. Although Bourgeois' work is quite multiform, also because she lived quite a long working life, there are some works of her that resonate a sort of energy that Hesse created with her work. Minimalistic works, but full of emotion. And that's quite a rare and special thing. Thanks for your video!

Yes, very true, both Eva and LB embrace a "formal sensuousness", even while LB's objects are often strongly figurative. Splendid.

"It makes my head hurt, in a good way." A nine year old! Intuitive fellow! Yes, she was not just "onjective"...there is a strangeness there. As well as the book I had of her art there is another of her, O'Keefe, and another artist....I had if from the library. Just now the author evades me but she is a well known art critic....

I thought Eva cam along much later, because her work is so contemporary, so much further ahead than the Minimalists/Reductionists. It's really quite a surprise to know when she was working, and also how undervalued her work was. Often, you hear women artists were overlooked because of the their gender, but, eh, the work isn't really as great as the male contemporaries. However, in her case, it's better. Really ahead of her time, with a very strong aesthetic sensibility, and the humanity of which you speak.

I read a book about her after I read a NZ artist (male...conceptual but he liked minimalism also) referred to her. I forget his name just now. I think he died relatively young also. In some way could she be compared to Rebecca Horne? Re Eva I felt it is like, indeed, someone said, play. Playing with shapes, forms, creating almost another world as if creating near living things...Not sure. She needed to live longer.
