Really compelling piece. What is the 'prepared' aspect of the vibraphone? e.g. why the bars near the top displaced?

Thank you so much! Those top bars are resting in such a way that they don't get dampened when the pedal is up, so they can ring out in the section at 9:03 amidst the rest of the staccato non-pedaled notes (a la a piano sostenuto pedal).
