I loved that he said he would write books, even if he didn't get money, but he liked writing for money! All throughout the ten points, "#1 Love what you do," and "#3 Love the process," ring loudly that as a writer, one must really love writing. #9 stands out also "Pass something on. "Love the process." Of course King is talking specifically about the writing process. However, I believe this can be a great rule to consider for all career paths. It is very much like "Love what you do," and "Find your creative process." All great advice for any career. Superb advice for writers who may not yet know why they are writing. If you don't love it, and if you don't love the writing process, you should probably consider a different path/hobby.

Toby Reynolds why would you write unless you love it? It's not like some work in a corporate merely to make steady money out of security fears... it's writing.. if you don't love it you will fail, and if in any other path if you the only reason to love it is because you are doing it then that's some lame of a reason is it not ? Lame satisfaction in life by consequence !

For me, horror is the main subject matter of which I love to take something so normal, so inoccent, and turn it into a very sinister, abnormal demon. I’ve been inspired by King when I first heard about him when I was 6, and began with stapling little pieces of paper and writing. Now, I am 12, and looking into publishing a fully complete novel. Stick to smaller presses and non-paying sites. What they lack in $ they make up for in feedback. If you're still getting silence, make sure you're adhering to conventional manuscript guidelines as well as that publication's submission guidelines. For example, if you're sending PDFs but they're only accepting RTF files, your manuscript goes straight in the Junk Folder. The Slush Pile is a bitch (for everyone), and they're looking for the slightest pretence to reject you. Also double check your email filters: I've lost a few good job interviews because they showed up in my Junk Folder instead of my Inbox.

I enjoy writing more than almost anything. I mean, there's nothing like it. I was born to write. Not saying that what I write is any good, unfortunately! You can love something and not be good at it. I keep working at it year after year-- I obviously don't write for money--but it'd be nice to be paid for doing what I love because then I wouldn't have to do some stupid boring job that I hate. I could write all morning, have an adventure in the afternoon, come back and read or write in the evening. That would be my ideal life (basically what I did when I stayed in New York for 3 weeks). But if my writing isn't good enough despite all the classes and many thousands of words, I suppose I'll just have to keep writing for nothing. I really can't stop writing, can't stop the ideas, it's just a part of me, I wouldn't want to give up that part of me. Especially not for some dumb job. I wish I could at least do something I'd like to write about, or at the very least something that didn't make me so tired I didn't have any energy in the evening to write no matter how much I'd want it, and just watch TV shows. But I've got to live somehow, can't keep living in my parents' house. I've got an ultimatum for this fall, I've got to move out even if I have to do a horrible temp job like the kind that I did before, just data entry or scanning, the same thing all day, mind-numbing, drains you of all creative energy--my I don't want to live that life! There's got to be something better. I have a poli sci degree but it's been several years since I graduated and haven't had a full time job since. I have a pet sitting business, but it doesn't give me enough $$. I've been writing but only self-published and a couple short stories published out of all that I've written. So now the time is up and I've got to do something --I want it to be ok at least so I can keep writing for fun in the evenings.....if anyone will take me besides Wal-Mart. ohhh I don't want to go back to those temp jobs, contrary to what you might think their mindlessness doesn't leave you lots of room to imagine, you have to focus on your task just enough so it takes all the ability to imagine out of you and all you can do when you get home is watch Doctor Who......I want a good life for myself--who wouldn't--? but perhaps I'm too idealist. I have to be practical, realize that I have no talent in much of anything, even the thing that I've been doing all my life (writing)..... Oh my sorry for all this I'm just panicking a little from my ultimatum but I absolutely MUST have my own place, can't stay THAT much of a loser....I will try mom's great patience at some point and she'll throw me out before I'm able to take my cat..... ahh I do sound like a loser...so what it's youtube I don't even know... Well, I have to get back to writing while I can. (who'd even want to read something from someone like me!!!!)

When I started writing seriously in the 80s, I said that I wanted to write a story before I turned 30 so frightening that it would scare Stephen King. I picked 30 because he published Carrie before he turned 30. That didn't happen. I didn't even sell a story until I turned 35, but he was one of the inspirations that got me started (Ray Bradbury and Edgar Allen Poe part of it too). I like his description of his writing process best of his 10 tips offered here. That matches how writing feels for me too. I don't know how the folks who plot everything ahead of time can do it. Not only is Stephen King a tier 1 fictionary writer, he has no fear about sharing all his tier 1 successes alongset his failture as he goes. That's the note of a writer who has exeperieced 20 bad years. This is him. I've worked in many businesses. 20 years is a long long time to stick at something.

Pass something on. Everything is on loan anyway. You're not an owner, you're a steward. One of the loudest elements of King's legacy that has always resonated with me, remembering the "little people." He holds true to this in nearly every aspect of his writing, partly I think because he still believes that the "little guy" is infinitely more interesting. That person has a struggle that is very real, very relatable no matter who you are, and it always makes for better stories. At least it does to me. King said something in an interview--in the 1980s, I believe--that has never left me: "I have a few bucks in my pocket to go get a pack of smokes." He doesn't seem to live to excess, or have the desire to live to excess, tries to keep one eye on the commonalities and it shows in his stories, in the characters he creates. He seems to live vicariously through them, and to him it seems "that's just good enough for me, man." He's the first famous person I've ever heard think, talk, or act this way, and it left an impression in my mind that has helped me understand myself as a person and as a writer, and he continues to contribute wisdom to my personal growth every time I read something he writes or listen to something he has to say.

King is talented in so many ways. There are a few of his books I'm not crazy about, but most of them I've liked a lot. Of course they are always very well written, but also their plots are--every one--unique, even within the horror/fantasy/scifi genres. He also never tries to capitalize on a past success by writing something similar. (with the exception of "The Shining", but I almost feel he was made to write its sequel, "Doctor Sleep" which I haven't read yet). And his diversity is unparalleled. "Salem's Lot was the scariest book I'd ever read at the time it was published. (It was a tie in scariness with "The Exorcist.") Then, when I read"11/22/63" it just blew me away. Again, totally different than anything he'd done before. What a terrific and fascinating book. King also seems to be a genuinely nice guy who's crazy about his wife and kids, (adults now, I guess). He's one of my favorite authors. I wish he'd get together with Peter Straub already and write the final book in the Talisman/Black House Trilogy. Black House was one of those books you wish would never end. It was filled with loveable heroes and seriously bad villains. I enjoyed every single page of it. I guess Stephen King is a class act in almost any genre.

I can agree with his statement about a notebook to an extent - keep the ideas out of the notebook. But I will use a notebook to keep track of certain things about my characters (established histories, major events in their lives), or dates that I've established so that I don't hav eto go back in my word processor and refer to it over and over again. But this goes in the notebook AFTER i've put it to paper and AFTER i find myself having looked back to check on it at least twice.

As a novice writer poet, I have always had to just let the idea flow which up until , I heard Mr king say that's is how he creates, I wondered do any real creators successfully work that way. Now I don't know if I will ever obtain success as a creator, but I started to believe just maybe I can.

I have sat there looking at a blank screen, and it was like putting a needle on a record and waiting for the music to start playing. Sometimes you sit there for an hour scratching your head cursing the gods for going brain dead. Then there arte times when you say here let my try this. And you right something and you go OK and you keep writing and like Stephen said it's like a train gathering speed. Suddenly you realize that forty five minutes have gone by and your fingers are flying across your keyboard, It's the greatest high. It unfortunately doesn't happen as often as I'd like.

I am not the sit down to write author, know that sounds dumb :p I went to a writers group and we had the 15 min DON'T STOP sessions people loved it and I could never do it. thats just not me, nor is gathering cool ideas i hear along life, nor is the hard working 8 hour writing sessons. My process right now is feeling those rush of chemicals after my natural high at the gym 4 days a week, then go to quiet library after and write for an hour. It works, I am just so excited for my own characters, I dream of them too, legit even stay up in bed over how to write them. it's awesome.
