I had an incredible time in Tampere Finland, sauna capital of the world!
Presets, Prints, & LUTs ► evanedinger.com
If you're new to my channel and videos, hi! I'm Evan Edinger, and I make travel vlogs of all the exciting places I visit. I started travel vlogging about 8 years ago because I wanted to see more of the world and be able to watch back some of my adventures. I also make weekly comedy videos every Sunday on my main channel usually revolving around funny differences between British vs American things! Anyway, thanks for stopping by!

I'm English and so is my wife. When our kids were little we decided to do something different for our summer holidays so we rented a cottage (mökki) by a lake in Finland. That was it, we fell in love with Finland and have been back eight times now. Summer in Finland has been an intrinsic part of our kids' childhoods. I can't even describe how much I love it.

In the olden days Finns were born in the sauna, they washed themselves in a sauna, they made deals, talked of their problems, met new people, entertained guests in their sauna. When a stranger came to the house, there was always a sauna made warm and then some food to eat. When someone got ill, they were taken care in the sauna and when someone died, they were washed in there by their loved ones before burial. So for us, sauna is not just a nice way to spend the time, or a traditional way to keep clean and warm. It is an extension of life. Hence the community experience.

Lots of business and politics is/was done in the sauna, especially with the Russians. Now with women in those fields, it is not what it once was, I presume.

In the centre of Tampere the "footpath" that people don't walk on is indeed a cycle path. At 2:40 there is a round blue sign visible with just a picture of a bicycle on it. In Finland the cyclepaths are normally separate from the road itself, not just a marked section of the road surface (the painted lines would be invisible in the winter). The main street was totally rebuilt when they built the tram a few years ago and the cyclepaths were added at the same time. Before that it was a bit of a mayhem with people and bikes all mixed up together on the sidewalk.

Yes Evan, it's the bike lane. It's so funny to see someone visit for the first time a place that's so familiar to me. I'm sure someone already said all this, but the river is technically a rapid with a dam, hence the speed. And yes, there was an election, meeting people face to face is an integral part of most candidates' campaigns. You must go back in the summer for mökki season 😎

I loved this so much. I'm a kiwi, living in Finland right now, who has been watching your channel since I was living in London, at the time about to move to Germany (end of 2018?). And I met my now fiancé, who is Finnish, there. When we moved to Finland two years ago, we spent the first 18 months in Tampere so this video felt very much like home to me. See you next time!

The reason they say to breathe in before dipping your chest in ice cold water, is that humans have a reaction to it: we will inhale fast and sharp, it is something we can't really control. So, in case your mouth dips below water at the same time you will inhale water. So, breathe in, fill your lungs, dip in and you will be fine.

I think you are thinking it must be very cold in Tampere, with all that snow and ice? Well, I have been to NYC in winter, and my perception is that, with that ocean breeze from the Atlantic, anything even slightly below freezing feels absolutely numbing; as if your body parts might start falling off frozen. It is not at all like that in Tampere. We are far away from the ocean, and even inland from the comparatively minute Baltic Sea. Still not in the middle of the continent either but just inland enough not to be bothered by sea winds but close enough to enjoy a slightly milder climate than somewhere deep in Siberia. For much of a typical winter, our temperatures are something like -3˚C, which, given the above, doesn’t feel bad at all (like it would in NYC). Granted, occasionally you get temperatures like -20˚C for short time periods, and rather rarely something like -30˚C, but those are really the exception and not the norm. (The coldest I have ever experienced in my life in Tampere has been -33˚C, and the coldest in Finland in general was -37˚C. That was in Oulu, in Northern Finland, and there you *do* get some sea breeze as well, so it felt *really* cold.) So don’t be afraid to visit. It really isn’t *that* cold here usually (unless you have very bad luck). 😅 P.S. It is the darkness that really gets you, not the cold. It is probably OK for a visitor to just wonder about how early the night falls in winter. But living here, you notice it really affects your mind and body. Popping vitamins C and D may help a bit, though. And then, all of a sudden, you notice it is spring, and days are getting longer, and longer, and longer… until at some point it is so light in the middle of the night that getting to sleep is hard. Those summer nights are absolutely enchanting but also a bit difficult to take in.
