Beautifully written, arranged and delivered. This song has taken on a life of its own. Over 20 years it has become such a huuuuuuuge song that means so much to so many people and more are discovering it all the time, even now when its over 20 years old.. It will resonate with us all at some point. It is a once in a lifetime song. You only ever write a song like this once in your career.

And it still looks modern. Someone from 2004 would not look out of place in 2024. But just 20 years earlier, someone from 1984 would totally look out of place in 2004.

Honestly I think everyone who has experienced loss of a loved one can 100% relate to this song and if not, you can still somewhat relate because it makes you feel their grief and wanting to hug them to take away the sorrow.

@@davidward9737 I hear people say this, but I don't think that's the story behind it. Especially since it wasn't Amy that wrote the song. And if it were about her sister, why would Amy be the one not touching the ground, and why would it be a guy that's focused on aside from her? "Lee considered it Moody's song as he wrote the lyrics. She contributed "a little bit" to the lyrics, but does not connect with the song as it does not have personal meaning to her."

A few years ago I was getting back into learning piano, and a friend challenged me to play this song. The next day I looked up the sheet music, had a couple of practice runs, then filmed myself playing the intro, first verse and chorus, and sent the video to her. She was pretty impressed I got as much of it that quickly, only an hour after finishing my actual day job!

Amy Lee is in my top five of female singers. There's just something I've always found fascinating her beyond her musical talent. Such a beautiful woman! And this song.....breaks me. It's hard for me to listen to it sometimes. I lost someone who I have missed everyday since she left. And this brings all that back. My band covers it, and it's the only song I'll play the piano on as a tribute to her.

If you really pay attention to the video, you will notice that even though Amy is singing the lyrics, her character is not the "speaker" of the words within the story. It's actually the guy character that has suffered the loss. Amy's character is the one being spoken about; she is the one haunting him. She never touches the ground, and no one interacts with her. She is a ghost/angel!

I've always thought of this song as an emotional breakdown, set to music. The opening section is the buildup, all the issues buildingbup. The electric guitar and drums kicking in are the dam breaking, and the emotions finally overwhelming you. The final bit, going back to the piano, is where the crying ends, and the healing starts.
