This video was excellent. I had never realized how clear Asuka's relation to Rei was. The quote you included about Rei killing herself if ordered to was just perfect. Asuka hates to see Rei because she symbolizes (at least in Asuka's mind) everything that Asuka rejects. I wonder if Asuka has some sympathy for Rei as a person and might just be assuming that Rei is suffering because she doesn't put up a facade like Asuka does.

Her damn life is pretty much the same as mine. Not only the personality, but basically her family life. A dysfunctional mother taking all the attention and destroying the life of everyone, an absent father avoiding the issues... and me who had to become the adult and rely only on my own while despising anyone with the only things I ever owned, my determination, and my pride to never had to rely on anyone for my accomplishments. To this day, nothing has changed. At least, I can take care of myself, I am successful in the eyes of society... however I am still as broken as her when she lost confidence in herself. It is not because you are wealthy and good looking that it means that you will not end up by yourself and unable to get close to anything or anyone. The pain is not to be lonely, the pain come from not caring about it... and this is frightening... just not caring anymore, about anything or anyone. I hated everything for too long, now I don't feel anything anymore. I just try to occupy myself, escaping, preventing myself from dwelling on things I can't control. There is a price to fight against everything with a fiery passion, it burns you out. The worst is when you are confronted to failures. At that time, you are just unable to get over it. You drown into it to the point you can't move on. There is no plan B, it is DO or DIE. It is a miracle that I am still alive. I always though I would end up like her in that frigging bath... to my surprise, I am still living.

@@GoatJesus who's you fav eva character?
@aso375 Жыл бұрын
Asuka Langley Soryu is the shonen character who knows suffering like no other. Let's start at the beginning, at four years of age. Most people have no memories of this age. Asuka, on the other hand, suffered the harsh spiritual trauma of losing her mother to amnesiac madness and suicide, worsened by her father's selfish negligence introducing a stranger into her life. An nice first memory, right? Ten years later as a pilot Eva her suffering reaches new heights, life threatening battles against monsters, widespread adult neglect and mental rape that rekindles her trauma. Think about, can it get worse for Asuka? Oh, yes. Never underestimate the self harming capacity of the human mind. Her desire to be an adult and gain otter people attention led her to develop a perfectionist and defensive personality, which led her to push people away with yelling and insults when things didn't went as she liked, and base her identity on her success as an eva pilot, a path that would lead her to the abyss in the battle against Arael. The series ends with her in a bathtub with her veins slit, with all her vitality and passion drained from her eyes. Her relationship with Shinji deserves a separate case because the two adolescents did not find communication based on the mutual sympathy of a shared trauma, but rather they misinterpreted each other and established a parasitic and toxic relationship in which each one worsened the trauma and insecurities of the other. Asuka's abrasiveness and flirtation didn't help Shinji come out of his cowardly introvert shell and gain confidence and assertiveness, it only isolated him more and scared him from making contact with her. Shinji's passivity was misinterpreted as rejection of her by her, added to her defense mechanisms led to her downfall as an Eva pilot and worsened her misery. Shocking, shocking, shocking. But brace yourself. Then there’s the End of Evangellion, where the pain and misery goes beyond belief. Shinji in a moment of weakness and selfishness masturbates on his comatose body to then have one of the most horrible deaths on screen: alone, in great physical pain and with rage and despair in his heart. Finally the instrumentalization ends with her discovering Shinji's dirty secrets on his subconscience and alone with him in a post-apocalyptic environment. Amid all of this pain, pain, pain I’ve actually left out quite a bit. She will have to spend years if not decades to be able to recover something close to happiness and repair her relationship with Shinji, and yet that will be filled with more challenges, tears, remorse and redemptive suffering. Overall, this is a sickening picture. Asuka's life is only suffering. Soryu has been through a hell unlike any other since her first memory. No other shonen character compares to this level of misery. None. Do you hate Asuka? Someone asked me. Oh, no! Not at all! I weep for Asuka. There is no other character in the anime who have suffered so much I feel only pity for Asuka Langley Soryu.

Pesonally, I cannot stand Asuka Langely Soryu, as she constantly reminds me of my tormentors. In 10th grade, I was often called a "retard" by the others due to the fact I had aspergers syndrome. Unlike Shinji however, I tried to connect with them in spite of their attitude towards me, but the more I tried to befriend them the more they hated me for it, thus the more I hated myself for even trying. I even reached out to others for help, even the teachers. But as friendly as they were, none of them helped me at all. But the person she reminds me most of all is Grace, who attended trade school with me. I wanted to get to know her better but she was hesitant. We eventually got closer but as we did, she would constantly point out fault after fault I did like a policeman, like a hypocrite. One time I stood up for myself and said, “You know what Grace? You're a fault finder. You constantly nitpick at other people’s issues when you don’t have the audacity to admit your own!” And she only thing she said was, “I will not be yelled at!...fucking asshole.” And walked off. Despite this I kept trying because I wanted to understand her so she wouldn't have to feel alone, nor I. But the more I tried to confront her, the more she openly resented me and acted like the drama queen. Whenever Asuka appearas on screen, I cannot help but feel utterly ashamed for not trying hard enough to understand my tormentors. And yet people still waifu her, fetishize her, idolize her, and worship her. I cannot help but feel like an outcast, which to this day is one of my greatest insecurities especially in the wake of a pandemic.

the pride sort of works as a mask of her true feelings, so the reason why she wasn't wearing the hairclips at the end symbolizes that she's embracing her true self without the fake mask of pride that she constantly puts on.

What im wondering about now is the line "how disgusting". I had always thought that the line showed that Shinji is still hated by Asuka, and she insults him calling him disgusting, leaving him to cry and accept that she hates him. Shinji talks about how being hated is part of living and that not everyone will like you or hate you or whatever. However, the line could be that shes disgusted by herself and shinji. Shes disgusted that they both have taken so long to truly open their eyes and see each other for what they really are. Now that they both are reunited, she is disgusted by their past, but is ready for a new future. Im not really sure tho.

Kimochi warui literally translates to “feel bad”. I don’t think it’s her saying to shinji that he himself is disgusting, but that she herself is disgusted from all the events that just transpired. She did lowkey JUST get brutally killed and enter a dream state where shinji choked her out just so that she can come back to life and get choked out again. So I would also “kimochi warui”

I guess End of Eva confirms Shinji x Asuka? I really like your video, but to bring a odd comparison, when you were talking about Shinji and Asuka needing each other and talking about there relationship, I was thinking of the last conservation between Batman and Catwoman from Batman Returns, (odd I know but hear me out) I was mainly thinking about the part where they both admit that they both need saving. As in, they almost need each other because there both kinda crazy and there the only two people that can fix the other. If Shinji and Asuka got closer after End of Eva, I feel like this would almost be there relationship, that they would both try to fix the other. Just wanted to say a perspective and a reason why I like Shinji and Asuka.

Miragephan Hard deconstruction of the tsundere trope?
@Miragephan7 жыл бұрын
Some people may disagree with me but Asuka exhibits early on many of the traits that Tsunderes exhibit throughout anime. However instead of the formative reactions and attitudes held by most Tsunderes to mean really nothing other than that they're simply like that to fit the appeal, Asuka takes many of those behavior and has them imbued into her being as a character. She treats Shinji as cold as she does not simply because she hold a romantic interest or affection for him but rather due to her frustration with Shinji's own accepting nature. Asuka has "Dere" moments in EVA, but they're very rare, subdued and mean a lot more compared to most in the trope. Like when shes making food for the dinner in 2.22, or crawls into bed with Shinji in NGE. Asuka, and for that matter all of EVAs cast have complex characters and personalities steeped in psychology and anime's history. This may be a reach but I find that a character like Asuka was Ano commenting on the state of expectation anime fans have for the media they're consuming. That isnt however to undermine the weight of the problems that Asuka has as a character in the Evangelion franchise but rather adds to the deconstructive factor of her actions as a whole. I apologize if I didnt make sense, your welcome to PM me or reply
@cruzgonzalez70617 жыл бұрын
I see what you're saying, but you make it sound like there were "tsunderes" before Asuka. One could argue that there were "bitches" before Asuka, but not tsunderes. Unless you consider Lum (Urusei Yatsura) or Sayaka (Mazinger Z) tsunderes? The way I see it, Anno just added his own personal life experiences into Asuka, thus making her more "real".
@Miragephan7 жыл бұрын
I do think the referred Lum and Sayaka are valid Tsunderes. However, I could be overstating my argument. I totally agree with your sentiment that most of the Asuka is Annos personal life experience however because of Asukas time and place in modern animes history, she can be seen rather as more of a template for what we now see as a Tsundere rather than a Tsundere herself. However, that intrinsically make her a Tsundere as previously stated. I may be off the mark about Anno's intent and think what you're communicating is completely justified. Thanks for responding
@Miragephan7 жыл бұрын
Another Note: while Asuka in NGE may not technically be commenting on the nature of Tsunderes in anime, Rebuild Asuka is probably commenting on it in the way I'm ascertaining in the previous message. There's so much progress that has happened in the medium since her creation and now having her in these new movies, products of a different time and place where shes had copy cats of herself litter the scene is something I'd be surprised Anno wouldn't hint to or take inspiration from. But that series isnt over yet so .w.
@whatthe59547 жыл бұрын
I think there's some conflating of the concept of having a reason behind one's behavior and someone being unable to treat people well. it's not shallow to say that Asuka has anti-social behavioral issues and is hard on people. It's true. it's also true she's had a hard, hard life. It's both and that's part of the beauty. If someone is stabbing you in the gut or tripping you or embarrassing you, it's not rational to stop and say "hey now, what's the root of this behavior." They are still responsible for their actions. (although I can see posing that she is a child. Definitely don't think she's an evil, unforgivable figure. I like her.) Everyone has outward facades. That's the most human of conditions. Being unable to grow beyond it is understandable but doesn't somehow excuse it. To excuse such behavior is to do that person a terrible disservice. The truest way to care for someone or something is to be realistic, else you inhibit it's growth. Asuka should have been dealt with differently than being told "you're just a kid." but as a 30 year old man, I now look back at situations like that and say "Yeah, I was just a kid. I simply hadn't had the raw experience to understand. I wasn't deficient, that's just the reality of life, experience, and knowledge." It also doesn't mean she's some awful, irredeemable character especially when weighing in her status as an adolescent. It just doesn't serve the story to sort of dismiss it. Tragic, yes. Awful to deal with? Yes. Worth getting to know and brave and someone who manages to stand up despite crippling pain? Absolutely. It's really a gripping version of the "all stories are the same" arc. It's both. One doesn't remove the other (in regards to whether she is a bitch or a tragic figure. Her inability to socialize is very much who she is) Asuka was/is kind of a bitch and we should feel sorry for her.

OMG I understand now! At first I didn't really like asuka (yes I was one of those people who thought she was just a bitch), but now because of this explanation (great analysis btw) I actually see why she was acting the way she was and see her in a new light...she's not so bad after all. I'm sorry asuka for not liking you :(((( You just gained a new sub, great vids my man!

Well she can still be a bitch and be unlikeable despite there being a reason for it.

@@maverickbull1909 true, don’t know why people excuse shinji and asuka so much, having a sad backstory don’t change the fact they’re unlikeable pos

ppl keep on asking me why eva is such a blast for me. And it's like you said, a personal experience. Forget the "religous symbols" and focus on the charackters and their portrial and you'll get a lot more out of this series. It's very existentialistic in the end, but with a positive solution.
