Every school has a rival- rivalries are part of high school athletics- rivalries are a part of why high school sports are so great. But not every school- or really any school that I know of- has a rivalry like Evanston and New Trier. This is the kind of rivalry that makes boys into men, with games that are played with the kind of passion that makes kids want to wake up at 7 am during their summer vacation to train for those two fateful winter days. The bordering communities, located just north of the Chicago city limits, are close in proximity and yet deep down inside, their vastly different student bodies make up two distinct cultures that could not seem farther away. The games are so hotly contested year after year that the bi-annual contests had to be moved from the school gyms to Welsh Ryan Arena- where Northwestern plays their home games. As if there wasn't enough drama involved already, the teams are routinely the top two teams in the Central Suburban League Conference and they often end up playing each other in the state playoffs, as well as in the prestigious Proviso West Holiday Tournament. After Evanston got the best of New Trier for three straight years (Evanston finished 3rd in state in 08 and made it to the final 16 in 07), the Trevians got their revenge this year and it was oh-so-sweet.
