EVAP Leak Testing, P0455 Gross Leak

Here we go again! This time we are tackling an 08' Trailblazer with a P0455, Evap gross leak fault code. I cover how to recognize and identify evaporative emissions system leaks, and go over some pertinent information relative to most GM Evap systems. The troubleshooting procedure used to diagnose this vehicle can be applied to nearly all GM vehicles utilizing evaporative emissions leak detection, as well as countless other vehicles utilizing key-on systems via a purge and vent solenoid. Omg this video helped me a lot, let me tell you my story for the sake of science and humanity. EVAP is a very difficult problem even a lot of mechanic don't wanna get into it. Two years ago i lost my car fuel cap i got it replaced from one of the auto part stores. And after going through a lot problems with my car shutting off when i put gas, a lot of time when I am idle my mechanic recommended me to change the purge solenoid and after 2 months he told me to change the charcoal canister. After watching this video I checked my fuel cap and I realized it it is not the right size I took some plastic bags and tried to seal it just to test and all the engine lights are gone!!! I just realized my fuel cap was leaking the whole time that was creating the problem all along.. thanks for this video

i have to call a buddy of mine and tell him not to replace the fuel filler neck on his 4 runner now. EVAP has always been a misunderstood topic for me (DIYer) but you've really cleared it up in this video. Next time I smoke a system, Ill know to close the vent. opps! great job on the videos!

Start with a new gas cap. Cheapest and easiest at around $10 - $30. Instantly fixed my P0455 code. Was giving this code every day. I cleared the code and each time it reappeared everyday. Never got another code for 3 months now.

I had a p 0455 code (large leak) a couple months ago on an 02 Dodge Ram 1500. Took it to the shop and they told me it was a crack in the Evap canister and would cost $480 to replace it. Sure enough there was a 2 inch crack on the bottom. Ordered the part on Amazon and paid $90 for the part. Put it on myself in 20 mins. 4 screws and 2 hoses to take off. The thing is not all mechanics are crooks. Only 99.9% of them are. Every single time i go to one they try to rip me off. Not his time. So glad You Tube helping me to take money from the bastards.

Thanks for the creating this video and showing us the smoke test and your other testing. I replaced the gas cap on my Dad's Hyundai Sonata with a new one from the local auto store. I don't want to mention brands or the company that sold it but, the new cap seal looked great and the old gas cap looked worn out. I cleared the code and it stayed off for a couple of days and then the light came back on. I didn't want to take the car to a shop to do have a mechanic do a evap smoke test because another mechanic on KZbin suggested to replace the vent valve and then if that didn't work to then take the vehicle in for a evap smoke test. I replaced both the vent and then the purge valve costing me only about $70 and the light came back on after a few days. I normally don't watch a 29 minute video but, I was glad I watched yours. The Gas Cap that they sold me at the local store doesn't even match up to the picture of what I ordered online and then picked it up at the store. The gas cap that I bought from the same store years ago for the same car had the triangle in the gas cap and the new cap that I bought that was supposed to be white but, was black didn't even have the triangles in it. The box number for the part matched up to the part number that I ordered but, I assume the gas cap that I received was a returned cap and the person returning someone might of done a switcheroo on the store getting a refund for a difference and probably cheaper cap and then it was resold to me. It wouldn't be the first time at that same store that a switcheroo was pulled. I am going to go there soon and ask them to check their other parts for that number and see what they have in their boxes there. If they pull out white gas caps with triangles then I am going to be pretty upset. At this point, I feel if I get the right gas cap that it should fix the problem...at least I am hoping it does. If it doesn't then, I can rule out the gas cap and go get a smoke test done.

I went to Auto Part store where I bought the cap and checked and the other cap that they pulled out of the box was the same as the one that I recently bought. I told them that the picture online doesn't even match up to that gas cap. They said the picture was just a generic cap. You would think they would take a real picture these day. How much does it cost to make a photo these days? Anyways, they gave me a refund and I went to the dealer and paid $22 for an OEM Gas Cap which was twice as much but, well worth the money. The OEM Hyundai Gas Cap that I bought from the dealer was way different. I haven't seen the light come on since I put my older cap backon after watching your video nor with the new cap. Thank you so much for making this video and showing us the smoke test and your result that it was the wrong gas cap! It saved me from going and paying a mechanic to do a smoke test and I would of been embarassed if I found out after paying someone to do smoke test that it was the gas cap. I let the auto part store know about the part that they were selling didn't match up to the Hyundai Sonata I have and the money and problems it caused me. I am guessing the gas cap that they were selling fits on some cars but, not mine. You are good people at Triangle Automotive! Thank you!

The money spent for your Diagnostic time. Parts and labor is far more costly than trial and error starting with the gas cap first. The rubber became hard on fuel cap. I soaked it in silicone. Deleted the code. So far so good

I had a Evap leak code. I looked under the car and found that the line coming from the tank to the canister was broken. I glued it back in place, and the code went away. But the problem of a rough idle after fueling still exists. Is it the purge valve, the glued piece, or the system is dirty? No code yet after many miles.

The Stant replacement gas cap is just that, a gas cap - they never promised that is sufficient to hold vacuum on the tank, just a cap. Bet they sell lots of them knowing its no solution but credibility in the auto world is a thing of the past.

i connected to the purge solenoid hose going to the back solenoid that is completely disconnected hose and all and pressure is building up and no smoke is coming out and gas cap is out

I could use your help. When i go to the gas station and put gas . It would take 2 or 3 times to start it. So i put in a new perge valve. So now it starts right up. But now when i put gass in. The gas feels hard to go in . And the gas gauge went up slow. And i had put in a new fuel pump in . So i know its not that. So im thinking mabe its the fuel tank pressure sensor. But not to shour. My engine light is not on. But service soon light is on. But no codes show up.

It sounds like your tank isnt venting when you put gas in. On my truck theres a vent solenoid around the filler neck area so that the gas will go into the tank smoothly. My advice: look to see if your car has a vent valve/solenoid for the tank/filler neck and go from there.

My oe cap went bad. I replaced with a similar cap that you had. Now I have a check engine light on and when I get gas, the car misses like crazy while running. If I shut it off to pump gas, it won't hardly start. And it will randomly start missing. Any clue why?

check ur vent solenoid... if it is closed you will pull a vacuum on the tank and it will make it hard for the fuel pump to pull fuel to the engine... the vent sol should be open to atmosphere all the time except when the purge cycle is running...

I did the smoke test on my 03 Toyota Sequoia, code was very small leak. Smoke was coming out of the gas cap as well. Replaced with new OEM gas cap, still has smoke coming out. There is a pipe going from the Charcoal canister to the filler neck, it was full of smoke when i unhooked it, even with the vent solenoid closed. I replaced the vent solenoid, still has same small EVAP leak. Any ideas?

Do you use compressed air or an inert gas with your smoke Machine? My smoke machine recommends Nitrogen for evap leaks but I haven't heard anyone mention that they don't just use shop air. Also great professional videos.

U never use just straight air. It will fill the Evap system's with Oxygen and push the Vapors out. Inert gas is the only way to do Evap systems with 1.5 psi of air introduced with the inert gas. A Car can explode with just straight air

hey there so i wasnt totally sure how you hooked up your smoke machine because if you hooked into the line coming from your vent why would you have to close it if its out of the picture or if you cake from the tank line that would eliminate the tank but you had smoke so really not understanding the the vapor lines routings made it hard to visualize how you tied into every part of the system so maybe you could clear this up if its not to hard to explain. dude on a side not i watch danner all the time and you are just as good of a teacher good work

Hey man, if you hook into the line going to the vent solenoid then it isn't really necessary to close the vent during the test, but if you opt to do this than you have to keep in mind that the vent solenoid hasn't been leak tested. I hope I'm answering your question sufficiently.

Triangle Diagnostics isn't there a port in the under hood compartment/engine bay to connect the smoke machine to? The green evap test port?? Or is there a specific reason why that port shouldn't be used? Did it require a special connector that you didn't have? Did connecting to that port not perform the tests that you did under the vehicle? I'm also curious about which line, and why you connected to it under the vehicle! But, great vid, showing a smoke test, and a leaking/incorrect fuel cap!

roadkill5333 , on this vehicle there was no EVAP service port present. You will find many vehicles out there that do not have one. On some EVAP systems, especially those using onboard refueling vapor recovery valves, smoke testing from the purge solenoid or the service port (if equipped) will not fill the entire system with smoke.

20p6 subaru sti cleared po442 and 456 can not clear po448 . What's your take. Replaced charcoal canister , some cracked hoses near the purge solenoid valve to the right of the power steering pump. What would it be on a chevy aveo if it pops up this code from auto zone. And we've already replaced the gas cap last yr from the dealer, replaced some things in the EVAP system last yr. But now the same code as last yr came up. We've done a oil change and a tune and that didn't help. It also hesitates and wants to stall out.

Having a similar issue with my 03 Tahoe I'm not sure how the EVAP vent works if I do a smoke test with the vehicle off I have smoke coming from the vent not sure if that's normal... I haven't done a test with the vehicle on or running... If I turn the key to on and retest should the vent no longer have smoke coming from it

You need to close the canister vent with a scan tool or on some cars you can just directly put 12v to it.

I smoke tested from the test port and looking under the car there was no smoke, but looking outside where the gas cap is, there is smoke coming out of my oem and my Stant replacement that everyone swore by. My code is p0441. Could it be possible both gas caps are bad? It looks like the leak is coming from behind the grommet, but its not showing smoke under the car where the grommet is.

My evap dtc 0455 is always going on .I just clear it with scanner. Where I live, it passes inspection and I don't need to give con artist garage several hundred dollars...btw, once it was a $2 gas cap from Walmart, 12 yrs ago... Screw the ozone

probably double check the fuel pump if it was installed correctly or if anything is off with the circuits of the fuel pump. My honda civic cabin smelled like gas inside until I checked my fuel pump and found that the fuel pump ring wasn't fully put in correctly.
