Having lived in Oregon my entire life and backpacked as well as day hiked i can confirm the constant rain can really suck the energy out of an adventure. Having a warming meal and drink for mid-day and definitely the evening meal can be really motivating to continue. Loving how your dog has a constant positive energy and ready to go mentality, if we all could just live 30% of our daily lives as dogs do then life would be so much better. Have you reached out to a K-9 clothing specialist like Hurtta for some sponsored foul weather gear?

In high school (9/1972 - 6/1977) I participated in a Junior ROTC program that had true "torture". There were weeks each year to participate in 'sea shore' survival along the Pacific Ocean in Northern California, 'desert' survival in California, and 'snow' survival at 7000' at Soda Springs, CA. There were limits to what you could take on these survival weeks - no food and mostly things like water purification, sleeping bag, string, fish hooks, knives, ... There were also shorter weekend events scheduled for orientation events, spelunking, and other similar challenges. You would have fit in perfectly.

November is the most cruel month among months. In Finland November is called marraskuu, which means something to be dead or just to dying. So true. No actual dying, but rather four clear seasons at best. Nature withdrow to take coming winter. First snow and first frost. Days shortened till 21. December. Without snow darkness increased day by day. So, I need more snow and along with more light. So simple! Some decades ago we have clearly four seasons, which was nice. Nowadays only in northern half of our fine land! So climat change is somehow advancing, which is so pity and shame!

I've slept outside at -20F (-29C) when in the Army, but the coldest I've ever been was after marching in a parade in the rain at 37F (3C). We were not allowed rain gear (would ruin uniformity of dress), so we were totally soaked and hypothermic at the end of the 2 hours of torture. I remember shaking uncontrollably for 2 hours even after taking a long, hot shower. So, I can totally sympathize with your ordeal.

I like walking too and while I do have clothes that are good down to -65 F (with the wind chill) I did have to build a walking coat for the rain and snow. The coat itself resembles a cross between a western duster and a Great Russian Coat. I has a hood and four pockets (two inside and to outside). It is a double layered coat. Th outer layer is polar fleece and the inner layer is a gortex-like material that makes the whole thing pretty much water proof and wind resistant. The only real problem with it is that if the wind catches it it can act like a parachute that will make walking difficult. Take care.

Better than double-hit chocolate, only while backpacking: hot Jell-O. Just pour into boiling water and take a sip. It's amazing how much it will surpass EVERYTHING you might imagine. Like an explosion of flavor. I've never met anyone else who's tried this, but as a backpacking instructor, I gave some to the students and they giggled at how great it made them feel in below freezing temperatures. I got the idea from a Backpacker magazine from back in the 80s or something. Tho double hot chocolate is good.

A perfect hike to challenge weather and your self. I kind of envy you that trip, hehe. I`m stuck in the mountains of Norway, so here it`s snow and ski or snowshoes included in the gear. But if the cold set in and the forecast is ok, I hike with no tent, just a winther sleeping bag and as a leayer as a tent, the "Jervenduken"(Norwegian product), as a protection against cold and wind. yea, you can let you snow in in that bag and have it super. Looking up on the stars wintertime, maybe -20 celcius, before you fall a sleep is magical. ps, there are "jervenduk" made to tuck your dog into as well. they akt like a den, and are just amasing. used by military as well. ps. The thermo is better to avoid condensation inside and a must in my mind. Wish you the best for your new adventure! ✌

Years ago in my 60s I decided to go back to Soccer Refereeing. To that end I began run training. I kept running after the season in the rain and cold unless it was icy. It got so that I loved running in the cold and the rain. Two sets of leggings, two pairs of gloves, and layers on my body. I loved it. Now in my 70s after heart surgery to repair a broken heart valve I am riding my bike everyday rain or shine. Properly layered and motivated it becomes less torture and actual fun. Well not fun, hahaha, but the result is worth it.

The weather was definitely challenging, but a bit of better equipment could have made it more bearable. For weather like this, I usually wear neoprene socks. Most of the time, they keep my feet dry, and if not, they at least keep my feet warm. I also wear good rain gear, so I usually stay dry underneath. There is nothing worse on a hike than being wet and, therefore, more cold.

What an amazing way to spend time with your grandfather. The other day, I was stopped at a train crossing, which made me smile. Why? Well, my dad was a train station master, and whenever I see a train, I spend that moment, visiting with him. He passed away in 1998, but every time I see a train, we are reunited, for a short moment. Thank you for taking us along on your hike, and even though you call it the worst hike ever, I feel like you and Vilk got so much more from it, through the cold, and wind. Vilk was such a trooper and he was ready every morning, for the next portion of your adventure. 😎

to me it looks amazing, as with that bad weather there would be less people and other dogs around. My dog doesn't always go well with every dog and there I would not have to worry about it and just be able to walk. Once I rented an RV with my dog. The first night, we were somewhere that got really cold and I hadn't figured out how to get the heater working, so I woke up in the middle of the night shivering. For both our sakes, I brought my little guy inside the bed with me (under the blankets). We were much more cozy that way and survived the rest of the night just fine. Have two plastic bags to put over your socks when your shoes are wet. Feels silly but works a charm .
@colleenbalch32811 минут бұрын
Bring sturdy regular plastic bags, put on dry socks, put bags over, put on shoes. Also, pull out footbeds and sleep with them too, and open the shoes as much as possible. If you have access to newspaper or butcher paper, stuff that into the shoes and change it a couple times. If the shoes are sealable, invest the time to do it before the trip. Cold wet feet can cause “immersion foot” what used to be caused trench foot, and is serious. It will all help.

Also hilarious was at 25:40 when you offer Vilk some of your snack, and he turns up his nose at it. This confused me, though: you are an experienced hiker and camper, going to a place that you anticipated would be cold and wet. Why didn't you wear slightly higher, more waterproof shoes? I also worry when you cook with flame inside the tent, especially with an active dog.
