Taking the example of Feynman, he says he felt like a fake, but I challenge anyone reading this to find three other people (other than the socially and emotionally crippled trolls like those who leave the beginning comments) who said similar. A few pointers to remember for anyone still reading this comment who feels affected by the video 1) most of the time, the only person putting you down is yourself. 2) if you're trying, then you're already ahead of 99% of the population and should be proud of that. 3) try flipping things around - "What if I'm actually shit?" Well, what if you're not? And for DOCTOR Maggie Lieu, I see how you engage with your audience in the comments sections of your videos. You easily have the knowledge and understanding to earn your qualification, and the ability and willingness to share and explain that knowledge to everyone here. It doesn't work this way, I know, but I would say you have no reason to doubt yourself.

You're not alone, Maggie! I do suffer imposter syndrome, from time to time. I've failed on several long distance, multi-day bike tours. To the point where I gave up entirely and gave my bike away a couple of years ago (I think I may have told you that). It's so easy to focus on the negative when you have others telling you that you've failed and it's nothing more than just a dream. With all of the negativity, I felt nothing but an imposter. But I talked to other touring cyclists who had also been through similar situations, where they had failure after failure. What got them through was focusing on the successes they had. Which is what helped me get my mojo back, so to speak, and bought a new bike with renewed determination. I still had further setbacks (like the flu I had in June), but thankfully my mind was in a much healthier mindset. Mental health is such an important thing. I'm glad you've been able to find an avenue to connect with others in your field. But you're not a fraud or an imposter. You've managed to achieve so many things. I have your back and I'm always here!

Omg Dr Maggie, that was so therapeutic, thank you! It's been 8 years since I got my PhD (CS, McGill) but I still feel like I didn't really do it the right way, or like I barely scraped through. I do believe it probably wouldn't have been doable without those 80-hour work weeks though, and I still work that way. Luckily I had an amazingly supportive supervisor and she inspires me to this day. Still, one of my mates couldn't finish his PhD under her, though I can't blame our supervisor for that, she tried her best to get him through the system but he just couldn't handle it.

I am a religious Biologist, so my head space has a multitude of self doubting clutter, especially filled by skeptical professors and "overseers" during my university years, and of course my own personal assaults on myself. Your broader field's has the direct impact of being popular, filled with mathematical assumptions, publicly competing ideals, failures of theories like string theory, and many difficult mysteries. I play with astronomy as a hobby and often get into those debates with fellow layman and the amount of absolutist amazes me. I like to approach the hollow moon conspiracy guys and point out, hallow meaning like a loaf of bread, not a basket ball. Its not an alien space ship. I love the conspiracy side of things, though and try to avoid the people who take themselves to serious because my specific field will bring that on me soon enough anyhow. Judging from the political atmosphere I am sure I will be in the middle of Gender vs Sex soon enough. So I hope, self doubt will be replaced with the charge of peaking into the unknown. Dive into the conspiracies also, those guys are fun to mess around with and you can learn so much about the way humans think doing so. You will even have opportunities to laugh. Also, be grateful your fields politics are different, for now... You will always be your own worst critic, and as an outsider I suggest you just fire the b*t*h, because you got this far dispite that aspect of yourself, not because of her. :) I miss the day's my arguments were over evolution. Such simpler times it seem like. That's why I guess I delve into the conspiracy side of astronomy, physics.... so on.

Same goes for doing a PhD, the competitiveness and the certainty that I would never make it in the "publish or die" world of Academia convinced me to better take a 9 to 5 job. Dr Maggie, I know what it's like to feel imposter syndrome: a deep profound sense that you are faking things despite ample evidence to the contrary. I didn't have the horrible situation of being in the public eye and nobody around me thought that I was doing a poor job (well one or two, but they were odd cases). All of my doubt was generated from within, and the anxiety that it can cause is at times wretched, especially if you are prone to clinical depression as I am/was. I cannot imagine what it must be like to be bullied in the modern days of social media. The people who never feel imposter syndrome are the ones who are full on Dunning-Kruger (oddly, those guys were the exceptions who thought I was doing a poor job).

I think deep inside, everyone feels insufficient sometimes and there must be something seriously wrong if they dont. Many times, they (and my self included) will put up a facade of being ok and being super confident about my work, but this reason is to not appear weak. This is what I learnt with my fellow PhD students - they put up the mirage that they were doing really well, but actually we were all equally struggling. Thanks for the comment and I hope it helped
@blacksmith672 ай бұрын
@ I saw the heart on my comment but missed the reply you sent. Thank you. I agree that there is something wrong if you don’t at least occasionally feel insufficient, I wonder if it is an automatic outcome of introspection. People who choose science as a career are obligated to be aware of, and control, such things as observer bias. Developing a powerful analytical tool to inspect data and process for flaws, specifically in objectivity (and intellectual honesty) might make introspection in scientists far more powerful. It is necessary to remove bias, but heightened analytical thinking can easily go beyond achieving neutrality in your research and shred into your core existence. The facade that you mention, makes the environment sound terribly toxic. Since this seems to be an ongoing thing, is there any widespread understanding of the effects that this is having, or is it one of those things that everyone knows about but few actually acknowledge. It took almost a century for various militaries around the world to recognize mental trauma as an outcome of war and to lessen the stigma surrounding it. Shell shock, battle fatigue, and finally PTSD stopped being seen as a character flaw and was recognized as a predictable medical outcome. And while there is no direct comparison between combat and research, living daily with high stress might have a similar toll on mental health.

I feel similarly about my own work and even hobbies; be it coding, or playing music. It's really bad when I compare myself or my output to others. I think some of it is like confirmation bias; we see the work that someone else has done as the final, or near final, polished result, rather than all of the dead-ends, errors, mis-conceptions etc. that the other person had to go through to arrive at that polished result. Whereas I see and know of the dead-ends, errors, and mis-conceptions that I encountered in my own work.

This is in repsonse to some of the comments at the beginning mentioning certain findings and discreditings that have happened recently that apparently you and probably many people didn't catch on to fast enough. It would be interesting for the public at large to be able to read along at various detail levels for all of these things to know how far along we've come as a species and what's left to figure out, so something like the bleeding endge spearheads left to figure out. **Sounds like a nice business/site concept and would be perfect for undergraduate students to latch onto early to determine which field of study they want to go into, as well as for people deep in the field to stay abreast of all new findings in their own category as well as many others that may have relevance to their own field.**

The problem is the casual acceptance of self-interest, manipulation and outright bullying infested in society. Realising that so many people (but certainly not all) are like this was an epiphany for me, a realisation of why you get those feelings of self doubt. So it's not you at all!!! Really. Also : it doesn't have to be like this. Carl Sagan's, 'Pale Blue Dot' has a profound message, and I have come to believe our only hope of "saving us from ourselves" is a deep and profound shift in the mindset of humanity, especially in the First World.
