How wonderful it was to watch this rose come alive from a soft hint of it future final detailed image. Your understanding of color, warm and color use to tell the story of light and shadowed areas in, on, under and on the rose was so nicely explained and identified. Anna, your paintings and your tutorials are like nothing available anywhere. I will be subscribing to your Patreon channel very soon (I’m just waiting for some supplies from Blick that you recommended (watercolor paints you recommended). What five brushes do you recommend for a complete novice? I understand poor quality brushes (and watercolor paper) can crush a novice. Thank you for all the beauty and talent (and generosity) you gift to the world.

Great question - I use round brushes in sizes ranging from 0 to 6, 90% of the time, but also occupationally small flat ones. You will always need at least one large brush for wetting your paper when doing wet-on-wet. The rest is a very individual, and depends on your style. I tend to paint small, and decorative, so smaller round sizes, and stiffer sable or synthetic sable, are my favourite. But in the beginning of your watercolor journey, you may give yourself some options, including larger sizes, different shapes, different fur. No need to invest in real sable / squirrel, but do take care when choosing a synthetic [not every synthetic will be close to real]. A few high end brands offer high-performance synthetics, and I would recommend exploring Perla from Escoda (they are a great squirrel substitute] and Versatil also from Escoda [great sable substitute]. Let me know if you have any other questions at this stage and most importantly enjoy every minute of it and don't stress about the supplies (except paper....Paper is super important! But brushes and pigments are really a matter of preference 💚 :)))))

I stumbled on your channel a few weeks ago and you've quickly become one of my favorite watercolor channels. I'd hit a point where I was searching for more content, but couldn't find anything outside of the more beginner through intermediate level that KZbinrs tend to cater towards. There are so many channels that helped me grow as an artist and I love them for it, I just needed a bit more and wasn't sure what to look for. Thank you so much for existing. I ended up with 2 muddy paintings last month that I didn't even post. One was a Jaguar that I wanted to do for SkillShare and I was very sad about it, but I think it's all a part of the learning process 😀 sometimes when I switch from decorative illustrations, I tend to forget that I am no longer working with gouache and need to add more water hehe

Hi Wajeeha, You can definitely find watercolor board or watercolor canvas [online or in local art stores]. I believe Arches used to make this, but you can look at other brands. I don't use it however, as I favour traditional paper and traditional framing. I did try watercolor ground - a paste that you can apply like gesso on regular canvas to mimic paper texture, but didn't enjoy the messy process. I think if you want that sturdiness, it's better to go with another medium to be honest (just my opinion but i am quite conservative:). There’s a part where you’re working on the first layer of background and you stop midway, do some work in the rose, get more color for the background and just go back into the background without cauliflowers or brush marks…how the heck did that background stay wet enough that there’s an even blend?
