Hello all! If you decide to prune at the end of the growing season in fall, you will be able to enjoy the evening primrose's leaves which can turn to a bright crimson red! You can then cut off the stems, as I demonstrated in this video, later in autumn or even in late winter or early spring! Very interesting. I’m wondering if I have a different plant… mine are 6 feet tall… leaves and flowers are very similar

Could be! There's a plant that grows everywhere around here that looks very similar, is super tall like yours, but the flowers are a little smaller and they grow in a slightly different configuration. ​@@teenagers012 ok, I figured it out, lol. In this video is an evening primrose, an onoethera, not the common primrose. Turns out there are about 600 varieties of primrose!

Is your primrose in full sun? What area are you in?

I have them in 2 locations. One gets morning sun and mid day sun but not afternoon. Maybe 5 hours of sun. The others are in a full sun flowerbed, but the rosettes are behind the cat mint. So, until they grow taller they are mostly shaded. We are in a zone 6a in Michigan.

In the mid-Atlantic my primrose will grow to 6' in full sun. It actually gets way too weedy. I prefer it in less than full sun. Be sure to not water it.

Oh wow, that's tall! Ours gets about 2 feet tall. I wonder if it's a different variety?

Funny you should say that because that's exactly what I said when I was gifted this flower for transplant! Turns out this is the 'evening primrose' or Oenothera, not the 'common primrose' Primula vulgaris as I always had thought myself. Turns out there are about 600 varieties of primrose. Who knew? 🤷‍♀️

Mine is different. Just a large mound that comes back every year.

ah, you must have the oenothera speciosa (I had to look up the name, lol). I did plant a couple of those which I had found on the Lowe's clearance rack. I don't think they came back after winter though (darn!). One of my lovely neighbors gave me some of her rosettes, and told me only that it was primrose, which was confusing to me because I had only heard of the primula polyantha variety at the time. I think mine is called oenothera lamarckiana. Interesting how many varieties there are!
