I like how the horror in this film isn't scientifically explained like some "alien consciousness" or whatever but is actually supernatural, occult and gothic in nature, which is quite rare in sci-fi horror. Great Lovecraftian horror flick.

I think that's why a lot of people didn't like it at the time. Scifi is pretty... how to say it... rigid about what "is" and "isn't" Scifi. Take Star Wars. That's not considered "true" scifi, but rather Science Fantasy.

GrimDark Narrator I always felt the film was far too intelligent for the dumbing down of films. I think from my friends who were more horror fans they weren’t expecting it to be a good horror film. I must admit the marketing was a bit ambiguous in regards to what it is. If they’d promoted it a bit more clearly I’m sure the film would have been a great hit.

William Gregg No. The liberals have done this. They have had exclusive control of Hollywood for many years now. For the most part, the vast majority of movies are either stupid superhero movies, and/or animated, or horrible reboots. And nearly all of them push their ideology in one way or another. Look how hard they pushed Bohemian rhapsody and Queen. They did so simply because he was a homosexual and died of AIDS. That falls in line with their agenda. You sure in the hell won't ever see in movies with a strong white male in the lead anymore. Like a Clint Eastwood. That goes against their agenda.

Direct from Wikipedia "Lovecraftian horror ...emphasizes the cosmic horror of the unknown (or unknowable) more than gore or other elements of shock" I more or less agree with this definition. I think exploring that dimension more was a HUGE missed opportunity for a sequel or continued universe (lol). If this were made today it was have been made into two movies, undoubtedly. But back in the 90’s and before universe building was not very common, aside from Stars Wars-but that was always seen as a special case-until Iron Man.

I have watched event horizon exactly once, and that once was enough to make it an unforgettable horror movie. It was creepy throughout the whole thing and only got more unsettling as it went on, and that last final shot that leaves you questioning whether or not the woman went insane or if the evil followed them back is just so perfectly open as an ending. I lean toward the interpretation that they did escape the evil, but that they're also scarred forever from experiencing that hell. Others? Others take the darker interpretation.

@@2serveand2protect the doors on all the ships looked menacing, and it's possible that the doors had an automatic "close" feature as a precaution against accidental decompression spreading further than it should. To me, it's left to deliberately ambiguous so that we could have discussions like this where we wonder whether or not they escaped, and I lean toward the ending that lets a few characters that made it actually survive. One of the best things about Event Horizon is that it does leave some things to the imagination. You're only ever shown flashes of the 'hell' dimension, the extra dimensional presence is not seen in its 'true form', and there's no sequel to expand on the lore or provide further answers. Just enough of a taste to let you wonder what's really happening on the other side of that wormhole. Excellent storytelling.

My favorite thing about it was that they so miss marketed it that everyone thought it was a sci fi movie but it was like SURPRISE BITCH!!! it's a horror movie. ^_^

@LadyGaGa is hot Exactly. It's nowhere near the quality, or existential dread; of Alien. It's a good movie-very good maybe; but far from great. Greatness is reserved for films like; Alien, Aliens or Wrath of Khan. This falls well short of those lofty heights.
@rocketassistedgoat1079
@rocketassistedgoat1079 6 жыл бұрын
@LadyGaGa is hot Eeerp, wrong. Alien is widely considered; to be a masterpiece and Ridley Scott's best work. It gets 100% on Rotten tomatoes, which means it's objectively great. Aliens is widely considered to be Cameron's best work; it also gets 100%. Wrath of Khan is widely considered to be the only truely great Star Trek film. I've noticed [and I have a major in Art-Theory, so I notice these things], that people who genuinely believe "there is no good or bad music/art, only music/art you like or don't like" A.L.W.A.Y.S every-single-time, without a single exception; have shit taste in music/art, and their collection of the former invariably falls into one of two types; rubbish contemporary pop [and today's top 40 music is mostly rubbish compared to what we had in the '80s and '90s thankyou] or a massive collection of mediocre music. Not interested in subjectivist twaddle, thankyou. The reason some of us bother with university; is to get away from mere "opinion". "Taste is rare"-Immanuel Kant. Everyone thinks they have it, as everyone's a narcissist when it comes to their music collection. Most are sadly deluded. But the cream rises to the top over time regardless, mostly [Hume] because of the consensus of the critics. They don't always get it right-everyone I know thinks Lost Highway is a masterpiece, yet it gets 40% on RT...but the test of time, probably through the slower moving mechanism of word of mouth; will correct that. It always does. The test of time; is the only test that matters. BTW, Lady Gaga has done about two songs which have any chance of surviving the test of time i.e getting radioplay 50yrs from now. But I suppose you're going to tell me she's as consistently good as David Bowie, with dozens of hits?
@rocketassistedgoat1079
@rocketassistedgoat1079 6 жыл бұрын
@LadyGaGa is hot Wrong. I'm just certain now [your whole Lady Gaga obsession was pretty much a giveaway]; that you're one of these people who simply lack taste. In my 42 yrs I have NEVER, not even once, come across someone who thinks "taste in art is purely subjective"; who has good taste. These are always the people; who have objectively the worst taste. Sorriez. You couldn't pay me to listen to your music collection, as I know it will cause me great pain.

@rocketassistedgoat1079 6 жыл бұрын
@LadyGaGa is hot Jesus christ, I'll share something with you; "conjugation is consummation"-that's a 3000yr old Greek saying. It means if you can't conjugate complete sentences; you'll never find anyone to marry you. Also, a third of my major is evolutionary psychology. And according to it, we're-ALL of us [exceptions don't matter, as it's not the exception that makes the rule]; hardwired to make snap judgements about the IQ of someone: based on their use of vocabulary and grammar. If English isn't your first language, then you are exempt from all crimes, otherwise...there's no excuse; that barely legible word-salad [conservation of energy...wtf does that have to do with art] you just posted, proves WHY it's a good idea to make these judgements. Furthermore, the word "aesthetic" literally means "to judge". That's what it means. Judging is also an intellectual pursuit. Intellectuals adore it and can't help themselves, others...don't. People who don't judge, who don't exercise that muscle, guess what; it atrophies [assuming they ever had it]. If you don't judge; it's philosophically impossible you will have good taste in anything, really, not just art. The REASON we're so interested in aesthetic judgements as a species, is because of what it tells you about that person; if someone has shit taste in music for example, then they're unlikely to to be a good judge of anything. This is all evo-psyche-from my major, thus I'm quoting the learned opinions of centuries of geniuses, vs...your subjective opinion. I personally know two people who think "it's all subjective, man"; not only do they have the WORST taste, objectively, in music of any people I know, but they're also both very far from intellectuals AND are terrible judges of character too. Perhaps the worst I know there as well; they both think some pretty terrible people are really neat. One of them's usually wrong about absolutely everything too-he's known for never being right about anything. Furthermore, he's careless; and just a few months ago killed a mother of four in a car accident. All of this is related. On the first page of The Great Gatsby [the most famous US novel of all time], the narrator divides all of humanity into careless and careful. Careless folk; are only interested in their own narrow, selfish existence, and always leave a trail of debris in their wake-literal, metaphorical and emotional, which they expect others to clean up after them. Careful people by contrast, tend to have decent taste; as they tend to be more intelligent for starters, have far greater depth of character and are thus more sensitive to innate universal beauties. Any artist worth their salt, will try to isolate these universal beauties; and instill them in their art-that's when the usually decades long journey begins. But you need to be able to recognize them first-and not everyone can do that. "Taste is rare". But if you don't even believe in the possibility of these universals existing...don't become an artist; as you have no chance of producing anything that will survive the test of time. How can I be so sure? I paint naturalistic landscapes in oil, and it's taken me 26yrs to teach myself; as no one knows how to paint like this any more. I make tens of thousands of aesthetic judgements a week, with every brushstroke melting into another brushstroke; so having great taste is essential. 50% of the reason I decided to give my life for art, was because I had the talent, the other 50%; was because I realized I had the taste, and that it was rare. I noticed both in primary school. I also went on to get a major in art-theory at university. But sure, your opinion's as equally valid as mine [facepalm]. As a hardcore radical subjectivist; I KNOW you actually believe that... Anyway, I'm tired of arguing with someone who's clearly an idiot, who lacks taste. If all the critics died and we had to start again, guess what; Alien and Aliens would once-again universally rise to the top. Because regardless of what you think; quality is innate, not subjective.

Dang, I was going to make a similar comment! Yeah, the movie fits *perfectly* within the context of the Warp and what could happen if you go through it without a gellar field. Frankly if the writers of the script randomly admitted "So we read a little about this thing called 'Warhammer 40,000' and parts of it inspired us to write this movie" I could easily believe it. ...And 40k was going strong by the time they made the film, so it's not even a far-fetched idea!

Stephen King wrote a short story called "THE JAUNT" and it was something similar to this. His was a WHAT IF centered around a technology like the Star Trek transporters. In this story there were similar ST. transporters, however you had to be unconscious to go through it. In the story there was a boy who decided he wanted to see what it was like to go through awake and somehow faked being unconscious. ****SPOILERS DONT READ FURTHER****** He manages to go through but ends up insane similar to what the Event crew ended up like. He is gibbering about what he saw and it had driven him insane. Basically they emerge instantaneously through the transport, but if awake it feels like you were there for millions of years alone thus driving one mad. The boy starts running amok through the transport station and the story ends there. I think some of this Stephen King short was inspiration to this movie.

TallicaMan1986 I kind of understood what I was watching, I was like 10 or 11, so I knew I was watching some terrifying version of Star Wars. And with the imagery, cinematography and sound used in the film you don’t really need to understand it for it to scare you. Fear is a base emotion, it’s instinctual, that’s why a lot of horror movies are so derivative, because a lot of things are universally scary, things we’re predisposed-before we’re born-to fear. That’s why so many horror movies are forgetful, but also why the ones that are worth remembering are special. The Japanese simply have a stranglehold on horror right now. I’m not sure what it is about their culture, but they know how to terrify.

This movie didn't really scar me after watching it once... But I have never watched it again since then. I don't need to watch the second time because it was that good, and that utterly unsettling. So for all our sakes, I will posit an alternate theory for the last shot of the movie: The few survivors did manage to escape the evil entity that possessed the Event Horizon, but they are scarred enough that they will be haunted by the experience for the rest of their life. The entity that attached itself to the event horizon was bound to the drive system, and did not make it to Earth.

@BlackBunik
@BlackBunik 4 жыл бұрын
@@tarapiero It is because to travel the space in WH40k, you must go through the warp. So the warp engines tear the universe a new one, to get to a literal hell, since warp is comprised from emotions of all life forms in the galaxy and possibly the universe. Basically without the gellar field to protect the ship and its occupants from the vile currents of the warp, the ship would be ripe for all kinds of demon incursions and mind infestations. So the Event horizon is basically like one of the first attempts of humanity to travel through the warp before the invention of the gellar field. It fits right into the lore so far without much fan fiction lubrication needed.
@BlackBunik
@BlackBunik 4 жыл бұрын
@@tarapiero However since in 40K late history the warp is very unstable and impossible to navigate without the light of the astronomican, that is our holy emperor of mankind sitting on a golden throne on Terra like a shining psychic beacon, there are occasionally ships getting lost in the warp, emerging not only at different place, but even time than intended. Sometimes they can get stuck there even for centuries without the occupants noticing, since time flows differently in the warp. Therefore Astropaths are highly valuable among the crew members. Without them, the ship may be lost in the warp for eternity. Add that to the possibility of Gellar field failure, you will have quite some amount of ships drifting the warp aimlessly without a crew or worse, carrying a demon infestation. These ships sometimes emerge from the warp carrying treasures and long lost technologies. They are called Space Hulks.

This movie is incredibly underrated. It's in my top 5 sci-fi movies and it's difficult to even find others that have heard of it. Even people in our own generation don't remember it for some reason. I recall seeing it when I was 12 in the theaters and f'n loving it. As I've gotten older, it hasn't gotten cheesy, lame, or cheap in retrospect like a lot of similar movies I grew up with. I highly recommend anyone that hasn't seen it to rent it ASAP (it was also on Hulu last time I checked). This movie still comes off better than a lot of movies made these days. Watching this reminds me of when Paul W.S. Anderson used to make fucking awesome movies (he also made Mortal Kombat!...the first one only).

I came here expecting the meaning behind this movie to be explained. The nuances, the parts of the movie that the general audience would have missed. Instead, this is literally just a play by play, going over the most mundane and obvious aspects of the plot.

I wouldn't mind seeing them make a prequel film to Event Horizon, there's a story u can tell about the original crew of The Event Horizon and what happened to them when the ship mysteriously disappeared for seven years (ahem they went to hell), i dont know how they'll strecth it out, but questions need answering: 1. how long did the original crew realize that they went to hell? 2 .did some of them try and fight back against the Supernatural entity that now possessed the ship? 3. Was Dr. Weir the one who send them there? 4. Was the Ship Always destined to be evil? If The Thing (1982) can get a Prequel film in 2011 then why can't Event Horizon get one Will Paul W.S Anderson return and direct it and will we ever find the lost footage of Event Horizon?

Soldiers of the Imperium, this movie has showed us four things: 1.Why do need a Gellar Field to travel safely in the warp. 2.Abominable Intelligence can be corrupted by the warp, that may explains the cause of the Cybernetic Revolt. 3.The first Warp Drive prototype was invented in 3k.(3k=2000AD to 3000AD) 4.There may still be a dormant warp rift deep in the atmosphere of the Neptune, we may need to fire some Cyclonic Torpetoes to blow up the Neptune or send some grey nights to deal with it.

The ending leaves it open to interpretation, as it's also possible that the dark entity oh they drove the woman crazy and didn't actually escape. this also stands is the best unintentional Warhammer 40K fanfic ever, as if it's perfectly well with what would happen too early explorer ships that went into the warp without understanding Gellar fields. It's a quality creepy movie.
@Schwarzvogel1
@Schwarzvogel1 5 жыл бұрын
Hmm, according to some sources, the consequences of travelling in the Warp without Gellar fields are even worse than what happens to the original crew of the _Event Horizon._ Whereas they simply went mad and tortured one another in horrifying ways, exposure to the energies of the Warp can, quite literally turn a person inside out and cause instant mutations. The novella _Corax: Soulforge_ describes this in some detail. Ironically, this happens to the Word Bearers, of all people.
@hariman7727
@hariman7727 5 жыл бұрын
@@Schwarzvogel1 it's likely that the event horizon did a very short hop to test their FTL drive. That would both limit exposure but also have enough time for the ship to be corrupted. Also, the movie was made on a limited budget, it is inspired by instead of being a direct Warhammer 40K movie.

@@DarkDisc1 I would think it a daemon of Khorne. The imagery of blood and violence. The Event Horizon's crew members tearing each other apart. Slaanesh has yet to be born. However, the trickery to lure one of the crew members to her death with illusions of her son. Doesn't strike me as something a Daemon of Khorne would do. Perhaps the ship itself could be tainted by various Chaos energies to create a unique form of Daemon. If WH40k lore would allow it. As far as the DOOM universe is concerned. This is well in line with Daemon's of Hell modus operandi. They lure in the foolish, adventurous, and curious into a trap. They make deals with the arrogant. They slaughter because it's always convenient.

What really got me in the movie was more the way it stayed with me, how the idea of hell is planted subliminally and it's your own perception of hell that completes what the story line implies in the torture flashes. especially when Dr. Weir says to captain Miller: "You know nothing, Hell Is only a word- The reality is much much worse"..

Event Horizon is a classic for me. Its not without its flaws but it was one of the few space scifi horror films that genuinely scared me growing up. Fishburne aside, i'm a big fan of Pertwee and Issacs. Sam Neill is always an excellent choice and I love seeing him in an antagonistic role. Event Horizon has become a halloween staple for me. As an after thought - Funky Shit by The Prodigy is equally the best and weirdest choice for ending credits music. Especially since the rest of the movie has a pretty solid OST. Additionally, the lines by Justin while he is trapped in the air lock were used as samples in the appropriately named song "The Dark Inside Me" by Velvet Acid Christ.

Great video, excellent attention to detail. Only caveat would be that this doesn't exactly explain what we don't already know or what we haven't already inferred. Perhaps if there were more information from the directors cut and or notes, it would definitely give this video something no other explanatory video has. But great effort nonetheless... Kudos!
