C.J. Johnson was the only contender in Gladiators history to never compete in the preliminary rounds. Here's how it happened: Marla Smith was the #9 ranked contender in the 1st half women's tournament. She was therefore the first alternate. However, due to her dropping out of the competition due to injury (another unusual one, actually), C.J. became her alternate. She never got to participate in the prelims, though, because Marla dropped out right before the Eliminator, and alternates must compete in at least one event prior to that point. So, while C.J. never got to officially do anything in the prelims, she was still the new #9 seed because someone else had to be slotted in that spot. They did not simply default to the bottom-ranked contestant (Samantha Bryant). Thus in the end, when Kelley went down, C.J. got the call. A strange combination of events, but it happened.

That bombastic theme from Bill Conti felt like Cagney and Lacey with a pinch of Karate Kid in there someplace. He did them both, too. This could've made for a good score for both, too, if Cagney and Lacey had gone a few more seasons (and there was a foot chase pursuit/car chase) and it would've been perfect for The Karate Kid III (during a brawl). It's a good thing the points were converted into headstarts in subsequent seasons because it wasn't fair to the people who were leading to still lose in the eliminator. 24:31 She's going down in a "Blaze" of glory!

The "head-start" format of the Eliminator is so much better than this format. Obviously, it's a bit of early-installment weirdness, but having the contenders go at the same time really makes it a bummer when someone crosses the finish line first and ends up losing anyway.
@SapinskiMath2 жыл бұрын
Agreed, it also put pressure on the trailer to have to finish in x amount of time under the time limit to even have a chance. It's also not helped by the fact that in this season, penalties are not calculated consistently all the way through the season. (None of them impact the final results, it's just odd.) But I liked having the Eliminator count for points, too, it was fun keeping score all the way through. Wish there was a way to marry the two formats.

Okay, question concerning C.J. Johnson replacing Kelley Peacock in the competition. Did something happen to Samantha Bryant (who, by my calculations, was the highest scoring non-winner remaining after Marla Smith's dropout) where she was unable to compete as an alternate?
@drewzuhosky68262 жыл бұрын
This seems like something they’d have mentioned on the show. Unless something happened between taping episodes...
@Tubewings2 жыл бұрын
@@drewzuhosky6826 A similar thing happened the previous season. Suzanne Rampe had the second-highest score amongst the five non-winners of the Preliminaries, but when it came time for the Quarterfinals, she was nowhere to be seen. At least an explanation was given as to why Zimbob Schwartze was unable to compete (she would have been the first alternate based on the preliminary scores).

@Tubewings2 жыл бұрын
@@GCBlues45 She wasn't in the Prelims. She was most likely the top alternate in case one of the contenders pulled out during the competition (Marla Smith doesn't count since she pulled out right before the Eliminator).
@SapinskiMath2 жыл бұрын
@@Tubewings I have wondered about that forever. Suzanne's score would actually have bumped Zimbob down to the #9 seed, meaning she wouldn't have qualified anyway (and Lakatos definitely wouldn't have). There has to be some disqualification or something else we're not aware of that happened. Suzanne, wherefore art thou that you can solve this mystery for us?

Kelly gave it everything she had, but unfortunately injuries are part of the game. C.J. came with an unfair advantage coming in late, and didn't show much. That's what happens when you cone in at this late in the competition. I agree with C.J., she didn't have problems with the hand bike, but unfortunately the bad landing dug her grave even deeper. Margaret was awesome, and yes she was very educated in knowing what to do before each event. Purple and John a battle of the two who lost in their preliminary round matchups. John won but close, sadly Purple had to lose again. I agree with Mike that Purple had one of the best cheering sections ever. Great episode.

Anyone ever think about the fact that there are 7 events played, most of them have a time limit of 1 minute or less, a few have to be played twice because contenders take turns such as assault, joust, breakthrough/conquer, but some are played simultaneously like powerball, wall, and atlasphere. That equates to 14 total events, 7 for the men, 7 for the women, some end in only a few seconds, some last up to a minute, some are played simultaneously... when you add that all up, that means that in a 44 minute show, only about 14-20 minutes of that is actual competition. American Gladiators could have been aired in a half-hour time slot, and STILL would have allowed about 3 minutes of show time for interviews and replays, maybe more if events ended early.
@ericpregosin5118 ай бұрын
Commercial time has to be fit in. Plus we don't know what the players do in between events to cool off. It never would have made it as a 30 minute show. As I mentioned there are things you have not filtered in that we don't see on TV. I suggest you talk to a person who has seen the show in person to fill in your gaps.
@DyrianLightbringer8 ай бұрын
@@ericpregosin511they didn't televise any of that stuff anyway, and it's not like it was broadcast live. A typical half-hour time slot has about 22-23 minutes of actual show, and around 7 minutes for commercials. The actual amount of time that the events are played equates to 14-20 minutes, as I pointed out, which means that there's still time for them to fit in some replays and interviews. I was pointing out that half or less of the actual show that is broadcast is actual competition, and the rest of the show is filler. We get interviews with contenders, sometimes gladiators, after almost every event. In later seasons, we get "ask the gladiator" segments. We get background on the contenders, see the contenders in their home life, etc. Basically, if you're watching the show for the competition, more than half of the show isn't what you want. Imagine if you were watching a football game, and more than half of the broadcast consisted of interviews with the players, clips of the players home lives, segments devoted to the players answering letters from fans, etc.
@PREGO19668 ай бұрын
@@DyrianLightbringer You make a good point here. But I think you would for a show like this, you would want more of these extras. Besides I don't think they could fit all 7 events into 23 minutes of broadcast time. The time used for interviews, comments, ask the gladiator, etc. is well spent. I really doubt that this would sell as a half hour show. But sauseech his own my friend

7:00 I always asked myself the following question. ¿Why between 1989 and 1997, white women gladiators were exclusively "blondes"? 🤔 Weren't there brunette or white-skinned with dark hair women in the USA in those years?... 😁🤭 I found so false and ridiculous that situation 🤦🏻♂️👱♀️👱♀️👱♀️🤣 Only in 2008, with Gina Carano (Crush) and two or three brunette more, who are representative of the Usa women, that stupidity ended up 😂 In first seasons only Lace and Elektra (and maybe Diamond) were natural blonde. 😁🤭

Well I love blonde women and Christina Aguilera is my alltime Fave but I also think that Melanin Queens are underrepresented on the American Gladiators. I love Blaze, her strength,elegance,class, coolness and overwhelming Beauty, but they should have appointed her much more. The gorgeous Blaze was always sooooo amazing in the Powerball, Joust, the Wall, the Assault and Breakthrough and Conquer, so she rocked every show, but Thompson only disqualified her without a reason most of the time....
@jorgeandrew2 жыл бұрын
@@JohnHartson20 I'm not against blondes either, but I always found it very ridiculous to show only women with yellow hair (with the exception of Blaze, Storm and Jazz, who were african-american) to try to present a nordic stereotype that USA doesn't have. Only in 2008, with Crush, Steel, Fury and others, that stupidity was corrected. From 1989 until now, that false stereotype was never present among gladiator men.
@@jorgeandrew : Well yellow hair is really harsh and unfair for beautiful blonde haired women but probably you are right they should have had more brown or darkhaired Female Gladiators to represent all the different Nationalities in the USA. Normally I love blonde Women and Melanin Queens, the prettiest Woman I have ever seen is Christina Aguilera followed by Paisley/Sharmell and Blaze. So personally I didn't have a problem with blonde haired female Gladiators but none of them was really attractive in my eyes so they should have released that boring Lace ( she was a bit ugly and had strange hair) so the gorgeous Blaze would have hade more screentime.
