I got a concussion a week ago because the horse I was riding, who is an incredibly chill horse who never acts out and I trust completely, decided to buck. I was thrown and thankfully only suffered a minor concussion (aka no brain bleeding). I stayed in bed for two days, taking advil around the clock and sleeping, and I can't ride or play sports for a couple of weeks. I was wearing my helmet. My injuries would've been so much worse had I ridden without one. The point I'm trying to make is that ANY HORSE CAN FREAK OUT AT ANY GIVEN TIME. They aren't a bicycle or a motorcycle. They have feelings, they react to their environment dramatically. I trust my horse, but I know that at any given time, he can get scared and freak out. I know it's not his fault, it's how his brain works. So I wear a helmet, not because I think something bad is going to happen, but because I know that it can. #mindyourmelon

To everyone going on about how they don't need a helmet and think they're too good for it, stop it please. Horse riding is defined as a RISK sport. Nobody makes excuses for not wearing helmets during a sport like football, and there's just as much of a risk of getting hurt in horse back riding as there is in football, even more so in certain situations.

Reason why most Westerns dont wear helments is because we have horns what we can hang on to long enough to get off our horse and calm him that horn has saved me many of times. While in english you dont have a saddle what keeps you in place and nothing to hand on to

When it comes down to it, it is a person's choice to wear a helmet or not. However, I am absolutely never going to ride without one. I have a great horse, but shit happens. I hated helmets until I got the Tipperary T2 and I hardly realize I'm wearing it once it's on. Please, put up with the aggravation of a hot helmet until you can afford a very nice helmet. They won't save you from everything, but they can be a huge help.

Riding a horse is more dangerous than people realize and the ratio of deaths due to head injuries due to lack of wearing a helmet is greater than anything out there. Yes, it's a personal choice when it comes down to it, but why chose NOT to? What's the point? Whenever I feel like I don't want to wear a helmet since I'm a barrel racer, I watch this video and Fallon Taylor's video on why she wears a helmet. I think that it's good to promote helmet safety especially with young riders with me. But, if you don't want to wear a helmet, you don't have to. Just keep in mind that we have lost so many good people to not wearing a helmet. It is just one little piece of equipment that could save you're life one day.

So true I am all for helmets, I just recently fell off while going over a jump and landed head first. When I hit all a saw was a red and white flash and then pain. I was not knocked out or anything and was able to get back on. But after my ride I realized I had no memory of the fall or anything else after for a bit. I went to the hospital just to get checked out to make sure and I found out that I had gotten a minor concussion. I was ok just had some head aches for the next few days but Im fine now, but if it where not for my helmet my concussion could of been bad or even worse. Im grateful for helmets!

I do have a distant relative who was killed in a horse accident when she was a teenager. Doctors said she probably would have lived if she wore a helmet. It's better to be safe than sorry.

I fell in water with my horse two years ago. I went under him and broke 6 bones in my face and got stepped on on my back. My helmet was completely banged up and without it, I would be dead. Thank you guys for doing this, the ignorance about wearing a helmet is unbelievable. I wouldn't risk not being able to ride again just to look cool or be completely comfortable.

I had a really bad fall last fall. I hit my head and I was barely concious after that. Had I not had my helmet that fall would have landed me in the hospital. Just because your a good rider doesn't mean you can see the future and expect the refusal or spook.

i had a fall off my mare one day, was coming into a jump and last minute she just decided to jump the height of the jump-wing. i got a little air born over the jump and didnt want to come down and land on her back and hurt her so i rolled off. Was wearing my Helmet and body protector. Got a concussion and busied Tail bone. BUT my melon is still attached to my head and i didnt break my ribs. very grateful, and then went and got a new helmet

My personal opinion on helmets is people under 18 who ride at a stable should be required to have one (That's how it is around where I live) but then it's that person's choice so long as they're educated about what could happen without one. I personally wear one but I have ridden without one before.

A few days ago I fell of my horse while jumping and hit my head. I went to the hospital and was diagnosed with a big concussion. My helmet saved my life. The doctors kept asking was I wearing a helmet and did it crack. It broke a bit but was a small price to pay to replace it. My mom took a picture of me lying on a hospital bed and I hadn't took my helmet off yet. #mindyourmelon

I hit my head on the ground just about every time I fall off. My favorite helmet is my Tipperary Sportage. It is nice and snug. I don't feel sweaty in it and most of the time I walk around with it on after riding because I forget I am wearing it. It is a super affordable helmet and it is the best I have used!

My friend had a fall where the horse flipped onto her and she was wearing a helmet and the horses withers hit the helmet and got stuck in the groves in it and it push her head into the ground and she fractured her skull, several doctors told her that if she hadn't had the helmet on the wither would have bumped her head and slid past her and she wouldn't have been so severely injured. But I still ride with a helmet, and she does sometimes.

This is awesome. I had one baldish fall were I wasn't wearing my helmet I got thrown from my horse and he got spooked at my cousins dogs and the gunshots, he galloped off so I jumped on my cousins horse to double when he slipped and fall force smashed my head on the ground, I was knocked out and had 5 stitches in my head and a broken arm. I showed this to my uncle who dosent wear a helmet he said he was gonna go buy one #mindyourmelon

My good friend was riding in a hunt cap all day at a show last year her horse was not acting like he usually does she dicided to be smart and switch into a helment during her next class the unthinkable happened someone on the ring side shook out a blanket and it spooked the horse he reared up almost standing completely straight on his hind legs the horse is 17.3 so she was up high then he bucked she flew off and landed on her neck/shoulders and rolled onto her back Her limp body laid in the middle of the arena and it was silent all you heard was sobs and people calling for the ambulence everyone was crying we didnt know if she was concincious or even alive she was carried out and into the ambulence on a stretcher she broke two verbates, messed up her neck and caused serious nerve damage if she still had on her hunt cap she wouldnt still be here with us

My one friend who I am really close with just had a really bad fall off her 17.3 hands horse during a show. They were cantering and something spooked her horse and he reared up she went right off the side and landed on her side. Fractured vertebrate. T11 and possible nerve damage. Right before that class she switched from her hunt cap to her helmet because her horse was acting up. Just imagine if she had her hunt cap on.

people saying 'why do you care if someone rides a helmet or not? its not your life' need to realise that we dont want people to die. read all the stories in the comments. many of these people could have died if they werent wearing a helmet. we care about if you wear a helmet or not because we dont want people to die. think about it, would you rather wear something on your head that will protect you and take damage off falls or die. the risks are too big to not wear a helmet.

@mia carter sometimes a body protector is worse. I was bucked off a horse years ago wearing a body protector and as I hit the floor the bottom of the body protector snapped into my back crushing into my spine leaving me not able to move my back for months. Its personal opinion to wear one.

I saw a girl who wore a helmet and she fell off her doctor told her she had more damage done than if she wasn't wearing a helmet it's not cool not to where one and most of the time she wears one but I think with a bad accident like that some people will make the choice not to wear a helmet and with what they have gone through it should be their choice but it shouldn't be out of wanting to look cool

I think helmets should be used because if you DO fall and hit your head WITHOUT a helmet, sadly you won't be able to ride for a long time if you get a concussion and or other head injury. But I'm not against people who don't wear helmets its a persons choice. but i got a concussion a couple weeks before i was going to start taking lessons and i couldn't do ay physical activity for a year. So if you hurt your head it may interfere with your riding.

Here's the thing: Whether or not you wear a helmet is a personal decision and you should not put others down for that choice. I've grown up on a farm and ranch where the only thing covering my head was a baseball cap. And we were hauling butt across fields, up ridges, through water, and working cows. I think helmets are a false sense of security!

Took a dive over a horse's shoulder a few years back.. landed on something hard. Not sure what, but it broke a part of my helmet clean off. Rather break my helmet than my head! False sense of security? No. What I was doing at the time- riding bareback by a creek and chatting with a friend- that was a false sense of security. My helmet, on several occasions, saved me. It is a personal decision, and I respect that, but I'd rather have a helmet than a hospital bill and a wheel chair.

I know a little girl who was like 5 and she fell off a horse and the horse stopped on her head! Luckily she was wearing a helmet and it saved her life! I saw the helmet that she was wearing and it was a 30 dollar pink plastic helmet and it had a big dent in the side. The girl was fine and it shows that just a small amount of money can save a young girls life who deserves to live a long life.

Tho I found the video to be well meant the beginning was quite rude. I don't wear a helmet but I don't care whether they do or not and I don't go running around telling people how stupid they look and such for wearing one as many people who wear helmets will insult people who don't. Simply because it's not my place to tell people what they should and should not do. It's their body and their choice. Horseback riding is a risk just like everything else with life and everyone has a way of preparing for those risks. Mind you that doesn't mean people who don't wear helmets area at anymore risk of getting hurt then people who do because I know people who have been saved by helmets and people who have been injured worse because of a helmet so the argument can go either way tho I feel the arguments simply aren't needed. People just need to mind there own business.

yeah my cousin got bucked off his horse and he was wearing a good quality helmet but wearing that helmet did more damage to his head and brain then it did if he would not have been wearing a helmet :( so my family isn't a big fan of helmets but i sometimes wear one

I actually love wearing my helmet. I think it looks stylish... You'll forget about it being hot on your head. Plus when you ride, wind blows through the ventilation areas in the helmet. The one thing I don't understand is that, why are riding helmets made like road bike helmets? Wouldn't that be safer?

Yesterday I was riding my halflinger without stirrups over a jumping course. I was having an awesome ride until the very last jump. My halflinger got excited and took off over the last jump. I tried to stay on but I slipped off and I slammed into the arena fence. My helmet split down the back side. I jumped up and I automatically felt dizzy. My parents got me to the ER as fast as possible. There was no concussion but my arm is completely tore up. All in all my helmet saved me from having a severe concussion. Wear your helmet kids.

People should also recognize that an accident could be completely unrelated to the horse. You could have poor position up to a jump and get unbalanced and cause yourself to fall etc. People should just be aware that a helmet is your best method of safety, regardless of your discipline. Plus, you can find some pretty stylish, comfortable, ventilated and affordable models on the market these days!

When I first started learning how to canter, my horse got sick, so i had to ride one of the school horses, he was very impatient, and when i freaked out because is was quite fast,for a beginner rider, the horse bucked me off and i landed head first... I was fine, but i had to go to the hospital to check everything was fine... The doctor said if i hadn't have worn my helmet, i would have probably died, or had to have been classed as disabled, and never ride again... I'm so glad I didn't take that risk #mindyourmelon

This made me laugh... the Guru guy XD But I agree 100%! Who cares what other people think? This has actually happened to me: I was wearing my helmet and someone made fun of me for it, and that person wasn't wearing one. We were riding in the same ring in the county fair and someone set off fireworks. The fireworks weren't that close to the ring, but it was still very loud and both our horses spooked. We both fell off, but because I had my helmet on, I was uninjured. But the other person cracked their head open and got a concussion. #mindyourmelon

I never jump without my body protector! i dont care if im only doing trot poles... i am 155cm and weigh 40kg, my horse is an Oldenburg warmblood 16.2hh and 700-750kg. shes the sweetest thing but like they said, it can happen anywhere, any time. a bit of extra sweat is better then not walking again

OMG I LOVE THIS> My grandmother was riding her Halflinger Jay on the trail about a month and a half ago with some friends when Jay spooked at her pulling out her water bottle. Jay ended up bolting and running her into a tree. She had to be air lifted to the hospital. She has a broken neck, broken her fourth and fifth vertebra and broke her wrist was broke too BUT only ended up with a concussion. She is now in a full halo for 3 months and after that comes off she has to wear another neck brace for 1 month. LexX2 Boyd's wife had a bad fall/hit her head while at a show, and had she not been wearing her hard hat, she'd have been very injured. Changed his outlook and I'm glad. I know too many eventers who like to ride without a helmet and I've stressed the point that if you have that talent to ride advanced eventers, please protect your head.

I ride both English and Western and wear a helmet. I have fallen off three times, once where if I wasn't wearing a helmet I would've cracked my skull (the arena was lined with a metal pipe fencing kind of thing, like some gates). The other two times I fell off a six foot tall horse over his neck and sideways. Luckily, when you end up on the ground from him spooking, he doesn't decide, "Hey, let's freak out more and trample somebody!" xD Thanks for the vid and for raising awareness about this. ;)

Thank you for agreeing. It's saved me 10 times. Once I hit a wooden wall 3 times. And this horse was pretty old. My foot got caught in the stirrup.

andrea mchome Helmets do really quite a lot actually. They have saved my life on many occasions. I once fell when my horse was just standing when he spooked at a pigeon behind him. I was doing my stirrups at the time so I had no stirrups and as I fell forwards he kicked me in the front/back of the head when he cantered past. I was knocked out for a few minutes and was put in an ambulance to go to the hospital and the doctors said if I hadn't have worn a helmet that fall could have easily killed me.

I sweat a lot in my helmet and every time I put it on It rubs my forehead and It gives be acne. #cry LOL but I always wear my helmet and I ALWAYS will. :D
