I had them melt before but they are great. I use them at work industrial place to wire 3 phase 480v motors low voltage sensors 24v to 48v etc or for simple wire splicing the older guys don't like them and they will cut them off when they feel like they need replacing

I have an answer for your rat question. Insulation contains formaldehyde. Formaldehyde draws animals for all sorts of reasons but mainly it contains the same molecule as the smell of rotting food so it draws scavengers.

Always carry wasp spray and charge the customer extra hazard pay for removing nests. We had a property manager once told us he would have a wasp nest removed off this upstairs dormer where we had to work installing a new electrical service. Even though the nest was pretty far away, they still got agitated when we climbed on the roof (after the manager reassured the nest was removed prior) and started swarming us. Talk about the fastest I ever climbed down an extension ladder. There are plenty of overload videos on youtube that put a wago to the test. They had a butt splice connector, a wago, and a regular wire nut and overloaded the wire until it started melting things and took images with a thermal camera and the wago barely got warm.

Had a call saying exhaust fan was loud, hitting something? Got there and once i had everythi g apart found the large clump of grease the blower wheel was hitting was actually a dead rat stuck in the grease. From the fan continually hitting it there was bits of rat stuck everywhere. That was a fun one to show the customer.

@3:55 Glad to see you're warming up to WAGO's. Been using them a few years now and they beat regular nuts hands down, especially transitioning from stranded to solid conductors. The question about amperage, there's a youtuber who does a demo of how well wirenuts, WAGO's, and the push in style nuts handle electrical current. TLDR; WAGO's and wirenuts can handle current well in excess of the breaker's trip rating, and gave out after the insulation around the wires did.

Always have to smile when some americans for whatever reason freak out about WAGOs. These days those are what is almost exclusively used here in Germany. I guess people would freak out here if they see wire nuts. I am sure I can get them on Amazon, but at least no supplier for electrical stuff and no hardware store here sells wire nuts. In the past you would more commonly find screw clamps for such installations. Today it is Wago or wago style. If you are lucky the levered ones, mostly in installations you will find the ones without levers. depends on the installer. I cannot even tell if according to our electric code wire nuts would be legal to use at all. I think I heard those would be perfectly fine and had been used in the past, not only in Germany but even more so in the Netherlands for example. Might be they are more common with our neighbours. but as mentioned, if they are legal to use, at least no one sells those. And looking at the space we have in our joint boxes, I would prefer WAGOs any time anyways. That youtuber, was it possibly that guy from Project Farm? But I think there might have been several who did such tests already, adn the WAGOs if I remember right, had been as good as, or in some cases even better than wire nuts. They are tested being sprayed with saltwater mist, they test how much force is needed to pull out a wire, they test them if they loosen up under vibration. Personaly I had never one open up so far. Of course you have to check the size used for what electric curent they are rated. I think the smaller ones are officially rated for 32 A at 450 V, while the bigger ones go up to just over 40 A. I think they had another rating for 600 V, but cannot remember the AMperage there.

I think that was John Ward that did that. And yeah, if you have a fire due to the Wago connector it's because you're running so much current that nothing would be safe.

WAGOs beat wirenuts IMO. You are only going to have a problem if you do not fully insert your wire. It also deals with stranded conductors much better. There are some situations where wirenuts still make sense, so I hold on to a few, but I use WAGOs for 95% of what I do now and have never had a problem. As someone mentioned, you can wrap the levers in electrical tape if they are bugging you.

⁠@@ntsecrets When I started out we twisted all the wires an solder them wrapped friction tape on them. Then we had the collar an tighten the set screws an put a rubber diaper on it . Then we did the twist wire nuts . An now I use wagos. Most secure? Was the twisted an soldering but not user friendly an was a resistance problem, mini years down the road in damp areas. The twist locks were great but in high amps an heat they tend to back off an like you said melt. The wagos? Are far the fastest an best to check voltages.. I have had no problems with them other than one time a locked up rotor an a over fused disconnect did deformed it unusable. But that was not the wagos fault.. but Out of old habits I still give them a 33 plus wrap of tape when is multiple wagos in an connection box just for safety coz I have had them pop open when stuffing bunch in…. But even years ago had connections twisted an solder melt an fry the friction tape 😂😂😂

We've switched to almost 100 percent wago usage and have had almost no issues versus wire nuts where someone would inevitably get a loose or bad connection, wire pop out, etc..I love them so far

Always love your Vids Chris. Switches to Wago a while and won’t go back. I did have one scenario where those clear wagos laid back to back and arched thru the clear plastic. I switched to the large gray body versions and never had a problem. Also the grays have an inline with a meter port in the. Center so never have to unhook again.

@@Sixta16 they were taped back to back on an ice machine and they arced thru and melted. Only happened once but it did. Look at the internals. The plates are very much not centered. Maybe it was a fluke or a defective wago but I haven’t given it another opportunity. I still use em just the heavier bodied ones. Plus the heck body clips don’t pop up like Chris mentioned 😎

Out on the power lines we had a lot of success with brake clean when we found a nest of flying nasties. Use the non-chlorinated flavor that way they don't have neurological issues as they are dying heh heh

Being swedish and working in building automation, what surprises me the most with US installations is how you use pure mechanical motors with belts. Here, we use either VFDs on direct drive motors for bigger applications(usually above 1kW) and EC motors for smaller applications. Even my more senior colleagues think belt driven motors are barbaric.

I love the Wago lever 221's and have switched to almost 100% usage. Use both the ones for 24-12 awg and the 20-10awg with no issues and I trust them. They sure cut down on tracing the loose wire hiding under the wirenut. I would stay away from some other brands. harder to use/reuse and some are suspect knockoffs I wouldn't trust.

Thanks for covering the fan RPM, Chris. I appreciate that these speeds are set specifically for building and situation but it's still good to know. I don't know how often and when you check fans speeds, whether you do this a part of a PM or diagnostic job or just on installation of new equipment, but it would be interesting to know fan speeds in other situations. RPM measurements could be useful in troubleshooting. For example, if a fan was found to have lost RPM this could indicate a failing capacitor (if PSC) or bearings going bad and if a fan had increased RPM this could be from the load reducing from maybe an intake restriction from clogged filter(s) or coil(s). This could be a good indicator of developing problems, possibly prompting further investigation, and save the customer money in the long run. Also, do you ever use thermal imaging to find leaks (cooler spots from refrigerant evaporation), hot bearings, belt drive problems? Have you used thermal imaging video to show the change in temperature of a system as it changes operating state to check for correct operation by 'seeing' it operate internally from a thermal perspective?

I always use Brake Cleaner spray to kill the wasps - they die in under 3 seconds… Last night i killek a big one in my car… I'm not saying that the best solution is to kill them because they eat other insects that can be harmful... but when I have work where they have a nest, I'm not willing to wait for the night to be able to move them safely...

put gasoline or another strong alcohol in a jar and cover the nest like how you did with the box. the fumes cause the wasps to asphyxiate and the gasoline starts dissolving them, causing them to actually die

Lol, burning house down because of WAGO. If anything will burn it, it is yo "wire nuts". Hilarious for a central- European. And so that we are not just making nut-jokes, the permanent installation WAGO terminals you shall use are WAGO 2273-20x where x is the number of wires. WAGO 221 is more or less for removable connections and for connecting stranded wire. Solid core wire - use 2273.
