Everdell Digital Review - is the online version worth it?

The digital version of Everdell has been out for 8 months now - how well does it hold up? I give my thoughts on the online version of this beautiful board game: the goods, the bads, and whether or not it's still worth buying.

That could be tempting just for the solo I think. It's adorable and does all the calculations for you. On my computer, I think I have digital implementations of Terraforming Mars, GoT and Gloomhaven. You have Catan yourself I believe. I've not had time to play it but I think the implementation of Gloomhaven would be a great upgrade to the normal game as the setup and teardown is way too long. Added to that, I suppose the enemies are moved by the AI so that's one less thing you have to think about. I think I don't really care for digital implementations of board games cause I have no desire to play against random people but I do enjoy them for solo games overall - I even have Onirim on my phone that I play every now and then - so maybe Everdell could be useful and good.

This review has been out for 8 months now - how well does it hold up? Pretty good, it convinced me not to purchase as I mainly wanted to practice for a local Everdell competition.

i just got this for Switch and the text on the cards are so tiny 😭😭😭!!! I do not recommend first time players get the switch version, its hard to understand what is going on

Aww, that is disappointing to hear. After a few plays you can sort of tell the cards based on the pictures, but it must be really rough for a first play!

95% of digital games as app are bad for these reasons. AI is still generally not worth it to play against. Online play generally suffers from some combination of being dead, lack of rankings and disconnect issues. I highly prefer a game implemented on BGA as you know ranking and connectivity is good at least, you just have to hope it's not dead. The few good game adaptions as app i know are TTA (active community, externally supported rankings/tournaments, still disconnect issues though), Twilight struggle and ticket to ride. Still most app implementations are just 2 hours to check the game and then get your refund as they are not worth playing more.

Everdell was my first venture into digital board games (aside from BGA) and wow is that disappointing to hear if most are like that without rankings. I'll have to do more research before getting any more, thanks for all the info.

i buy my games thru steam, but have mostly held off buying board games there because the comments for seemingly every game say that online multiplayer is buggy and not worth it i did buy Yellow n Yagtze and Le Havre, which work well - but i haven't played online yet i have high hopes for Root, tho😎

Yep, it's like a curse, the fancier the implementation the more UI issues they tend to have. As cute as that hedgehog is I would much prefer a utilitarian BGA or Yucata implementation.

Terraforming Mars also has a very contested leaderboard (and a very active community). The app is totally bug-ridden, though.
