How do you handle students that don't want to share their writing in class because they are scared, embarrassed, or just don't care? How about students that don't like peer review?

For the verbal feedback activity, students know in advance that I'll be giving public feedback on their submission during the next class period. So if a student is unwilling to get verbal feedback, they can just not turn the assignment in. The activity is only worth 1-2 points. Or, they can turn it in but not come to that class. That way, they can get partial/whole credit for the activity, but not have to go through verbal feedback. But my students know they can choose to get "basic" feedback, so I don't tend to get an unusual amount of absences or missing work on those days. As for not liking peer review, that's something I still struggle with. Most students tend to give very little feedback, so I'm still experimenting with improving that element of my courses.

Virtual classes bring with it the issue of who’s listening, why don’t I see your face, etc. How do you deal with that?

So I basically didn't see any of my Zoom students when teaching my hyflex classes. That's why I started relying on the random name generator (kzbin.info/www/bejne/rKK9l353apuilas) to call on students. I think the random nature of that tool kept my online students more connected to the class. My courses are mainly discussions, so we rarely went long periods of time before someone spoke up or was called on. They didn't always have an answer, but I could at least know if they were there at all. Definitely a tough position to be in.

I was surprised when so many students picked that activity when designing the third unit. I knew it could be really helpful, but wasn’t sure students would see and appreciate that. I’d love to hear how it goes for you!
