Since I was 5 I wanted to climb Mt. Everest. I lived in Texas so the ground was pretty flat. This is going to sound very unreal and cringe but my heart felt like there was a piece missing. I moved to Colorado where there were some mountains. When I saw them, I just broke down and cried. It was like a reunion with someone that meant so much to me. I decided to start training. I would do hikes, gym time, anything to get me physically fit. Then I was diagnosed with Scoliosis. Scoliosis is when your spine is curved. It is something people are born with but it is very rare. I had to wear a back brace for 3 years. It was painful. The goal was to hold me in place when I grew so my spine would stop twisting. I wore it 18 hours a day for those 3 years. It didn’t work. I took an MRI and my spine had twisted to 50 degrees. I went into Spinal Fusion surgery. I needed bone grafting and I got 2 rods and 24 screws placed in my back. I was left with a 2 foot scar. After 4 months of recovery, I realized I lost a lot of mobility and all of my progress for getting strong was gone. My lungs had been repositioned, my whole body was moved a different way. I didn’t know how to walk. This was a huge setback but it also made me mentally and emotionally strong. I gained my strength back. I am 13 years old now and am training harder than I ever have been before. My family and I are traveling the world so my dad and I can climb big mountains in the various locations. My dad will climb Mt. Everest with me. When I’m 21 it will become a reality. We are traveling to Alaska to practice climbing on ice and moving ice. We are also doing a training to fight altitude sickness. Everyday I practice breathing out of a stir straw. (That is what it’s like breathing on everest) EDIT: sorry for the freakin novel EDIT 2: thx for all the likes😍

Wow what a great video, and as a retired mountaineer I salute you for making the best decision of your life to turn around. Even at 18 years old you are not experienced enough for the challenges of mountains especially like Everest or K2. More than half the people who decide to climb mountains have no idea what they are doing, don't have the right equipment, and put other people in danger when they have to be rescued. Whenever I climbed a mountain I never once said I may not return, you need the experience and optimism of returning each tine. I did have several very hairy moments over several years, but my days of mountaineering are now over. You are right, the mountains will always be there and your day will come when you'll be standing on the roof of the world, good luck and all the best to you!!

I think you are missing the point. This man made the decision to come back down because he was humble enough and rational enough to realize that he was not prepared. There are so many dead bodies on Everest because people refuse to accept that fact. “My regulator is broken, I can still make it”. “I left later than I should for the summit, I can still make it”. “I’m exhausted, I can still make it.” It’s easy to sit there and judge him, but at the end of the day, he assessed the risks, made a decision, and realized the risk outweighed the cost and benefit. Very few people have the clear state of mind to do that, especially when you have already made the trip to Everest and spent so much money and invested so much time. Kudos to him I say.

There were actually multiple expeditions starting from the 1920s where there had already been some systems set up to cross dangerous paths and zones but those climbers died. The first people to summit weren’t the first people to climb, Hillary and Norgay Sherpa had been studying those past failed expeditions to understand what not to do. Also Tenzing Norgay set up a lot of stuff on his own on the way up. As an experienced mountaineer you have to be able to set up safety systems for yourself as you are climbing. Most people climbing these days are not experienced and are spoiled by the constant hard work that the actual mountaineers do to keep these paths as safe as possible. The Sherpas have to repair and set up new harnesses or ladders all the time

Rizza, this is the best video I’ve seen on climbing Everest. You’re a very likable person. You have a wonderful humility and respect for the mountain. I was rooting for you. So glad you were able to be there and you are wise beyond your years. God bless you!

If he was “smart,” he wouldn’t have tackled Mt. Everest without gaining plenty of prior experience at lower altitudes, on fixed ropes, and in high altitude climbing. Inexperienced climbers who think mountaineering, especially on the advanced peaks, is some kind of daydreamers’ cake-walk, are responsible for plenty of other people losing their lives on mountains like Everest. Glad he’s alive. Even more glad that the sherpas whose lives he put in danger with his foolishness are alive.

Am I missing something or did this guy have ZERO alpine experience, let alone 8,000 meter experience? He wakes up and his water bottle is frozen and he's shocked! If your dream is to climb Mt. Everest, spend at least 5 years getting significant experience above 6,000 m, maybe at least one 8,000 m. "My dream was always to be a surgeon. I skipped medical school and here I am operating on my first patient." Probably not going to go too well.

@R. M I would agree if it was a regular high mountain, but you don't think like that when it comes to Everest. The mountain is littered with dead bodies to the point they use dead people as navigation, because it's impossible to get them down. The sherpas risk their lives helping people who think exactly like you and they are not getting paid enough. Only highly trained people should be allowed to climb that mountain, you are practically in space up there.

Crazy that now days people want and try to climbed Everest before they spent 1 night in a tent or climbed heaps of other mountains. After that minute it was clear it is only luck or badluck what's gonna happen. The mountains did not change. But people did. Many lost respect or call it natural experience in what they do or shouldn't do. I m mountaineering for more than 20 years now and climbed many mountains. But I won't do Everest. Because it became A playground of stupid tourism. I ve been in the region and was disappointed how it works. People with barely experience but with Mony and equipment fly there (not walk) and try to get there Instagram shot and story ... That must turn in disaster on 8000m. Obviously. Go camping, go climbing but do it somewhere you're belonging to (related with your experience) where you can learn from your mistakes and don't put yourself and others and rescue people in serious danger. 90% of the aspirants do not bring the experience which is need on that mountain. Say the guides from the EBC. Please start thinking about that, before you book your Everest trip.

You really took the right decision. Life matters a lot and it's not that you will not get another chance. Earlier I thought that climbing mountains is an easy thing but now I realised that it is the most toughest thing in one's life. The man who has climbed mountain is always a changed man. His way of thinking and reacting to new opportunities is different from us
