I had a ZT. They are tricky to steer at first, but once you get the hang of it, it's great. ZTs really shine if you have to mow around a lot of obstacles or landscaping. However, they ride rough. Almost impossible to go full throttle on one if there are a lot of bumps or tree roots in the yard. Whenever I ran over rough ground it really hurt. I now have a x350 tractor. It doesn't matter what I drive over in that thing, for some reason the ride is like floating on air. However, it's a PITA mowing around obstacles and landscaping.

I like the smooth ride of tractor too. Lawn here is not level. The softer ride on tractor I think is because the front wheels might be a bit larger and filled with air vs zero turn solid rubber up front

They didn't mention the biggest issue between tractor and zero-turn, which is mowing on hillsides or in wet grass. Zero turns are hard to control on any hillside or when grass is wet, the hydrostatic transmissions and the unsteerable front tires on zero turns make it next to impossible to hold the mower on a straight line across a slope, or keep the mower going uphill on a straight line when the grass is wet.

Here's an issue I encountered. Using a lawn/garden tractor, it allows you to use implements. One in particular would a broadcast spreader. With the tractor, you are able to setup a speed and drop setting to broadcast fertilizer. Cannot accurately do that with a zrt. But, when comparing cutting quality and timed saved, the zrt wins hands down.

I know this video was filmed in Florida, but as for us who live in a four seasons state that have to deal with snow, tractor mower would be better because you can put on a front PTO and use a blade or snowblower, and get 4wd or awd as well. Some even have rear steer on fancier tractor mowers.

Neither of these two mowers will mow at 5 MPH without quality of cut issues. Higher ground speed requires higher blade speed. A commercial grade Z-Turn has a much faster blade speed than homeowner versions. Z-Turn mowers perform well mowing a relatively level lawn with many obstructions to mow around. They are also faster at reversing course at the end of a row while "striping" the lawn. I hope this helps someone before they experience buyers remorse.
@patrickweaver11057 ай бұрын
The problem I have with zero turns is there are so few people who know how to adjust one properly. The linkages are unnecessarily complex and is many cases almost inaccessible. So the steering performance steadily degrades and can't be fixed by the average homeowner. With a tractor I can change the steering sector and pinion gear in about an hour and it's just like new.

The zero turn is far better for me than the tractor style. I have 100 trees on my property, and I mow around trees A LOT. The zero turn is one pass. I also have slopes and bumpy areas on my property where one rear wheel can get stuck off the ground. The tractor just sends power to the wheel with no traction. Since the zero turn independently controls each wheel, I can send all the power to the wheel that has traction. Everything in life has advantages and disadvantages, buy what works best for you.
@style5tie5 ай бұрын
If you don't have an ATV, SxS, or real tractor to do actual work with, a tractor-type mower is good to have for light-duty hauling or snow removal. But for strictly mowing, I'll never go back to a tractor mower after owning a ZT. I have lots of hills, ditches, and tons of stuff to mow around and I cut my mowing time from 2+ hours to 1 hour. You just have to be careful with a ZT. They have a steep learning curve if you have anything but a flat yard.

When you can spend 1-2 thousand more and get a low grade commercial that will last 10-12 years or longer and you explain that to the customer they will buy commercial grade. That or offer some of the low end commercial Stihl mowers for home owners. John Deere should be ashamed having their name on those 2 models full of plastic handles and levers. John Deere always stood for well built reliable long lasting machines those 2 right there are not long lasting reliable machines. Shame on John Deere for allowing their name on such equipment. How the times have changed :P Yes I know they make some good ones too, but they should not have stooped so low with those 2 particular models they are not good enough to have that name.
