I would honestly love to go back to a monthly subscription model; get rid of the freeloading botters, establish a reliable method of income for the company that would allow them to track real-time engagement and popularity levels without making them beholden to the Krono farmers, and we wouldn't have to have any of this "True Box, relaxed True Box, multi-box" etc stuff. Then perhaps they could afford to dedicate some money to hiring 1 or 2 people who know how to create real quest lines, rather than faction grinds for expansion-specific currencies that are outdated and useless within a short time. Would also be nice to see them consolidate all Live and same-era TLPs into a single server, to help people find groups and bolster the MMO part of MMORPG. With the change to 64-bit code, they should be able to accommodate more than 2k players max concurrent players or so per server. 🥲

Every time I long for everquest again, i have to remind myself that the experience will never be the same. I started during the era when the internet was still something kind of new, there were no complete guides to the world out, you had to run around and figure everything out yourself, and though it was hard, it was riveting. Everything these days is copy paste lookup and faceroll. Younger gens of gamers will never know what they missed.

I wonder if that classic EQ2 server will have the original Betrayal quest lines. I loved the whole experience of those and have very fond memories of being the only High Elf Shadowknight on my server for quite a while.

A couple years go on a standard live server I did the Betrayal from a High Elf conjurer or whatever mage was called into a High Elf Necromancer and moved into Neriak. The quests to betray were pretty cool. Dunno if those were changed from what the original was though.

@@holgualoxford3871 At the start of the game, the Betrayal Questline was a "You only get to do this once" experience. You had clear out all of your possessions from the only house you could own, clear out your bank, and take ALL OF IT with you while you betrayed Qeynos or Freeport before you reached level 17. Queen Antonia would personally exile you, and Lucan D'Lere ordered your execution, only for the executioner to actually put you into a death state before waking you up outside in the Commonlands. From there, you had to travel across to the other side of the world, and among other things kill 500 gnolls or orcs to prove your worth. By the time Kelethin and Neriak were put into the game, the old betrayal system was removed and the new one put in to match the fact that players now chose their class at creation instead of progressing to their final chosen class at 20.

I spent a few weeks clearing the ToFS solo on my 50 ranger on p99 blue. What an incredible zone. Sad the loot doesnt really hold up. However the key and zone progression was really fun. Felt really good killing the boss finally after weeks of keys, learning, dying, figuring out tactics.

They said 2006 specifically because that's after the class-progression and sub-combines were removed, but BEFORE the overland content was turned into solo content. They have stated that they *CANNOT* go back to the 2004 era. They would have to program the game from the ground up all over again to bring back the class progression that we had until the middle of Desert of Flame. It's a compromise to taking the game back to as far as they can with a class system that just... cannot be changed at this point.

The only thing that would get me back for a tlp is a change on box rules at launch and an actual plan to combat the massive amounts of botting. The last tlp I played, by the end of the second week there were hundreds of max level bots farming drops.

I didn't play EQ, however I have played EQII for, uhmmm ... well, not from the beginning, but a long long time. I am a dedicated crafter, so I must ask (with fear & dread) - will the crafting system go aaalll the way back to making those bloody combines to make EVERYTHING? Ya know, the paper, the ink, the quill ...(& that's just the Sages). I never did manage to get the correct number of everything & absolutely sucked at crafting. It is a wonder I eventually managed to be devoted to it. It sounds like we won't be making that awesome choice immediately after hitting the sand - Adventurer or Crafter? I'll admit that is the moment that sticks most strongly with me. Aaahhh, memories. I did appreciate the community of the game which was & is now so lost. I wonder & HOPE the players today can get with that after being so solo so long. Admittedly, there are some newer changes I'll find it difficult to be without. However, I anticipate, with joy, giving the re-run a run! ; > D

Wanted to be excited, hoped they read their message boards and the posts from the people who wants to be able to 2-3 box without boosting their electric bill, but sadly they seem to just release whatever they feel like and not listen to their customer base. I like the idea about Mischief/FV rules, tho i hope it wont be the same kind of increased loot pinata that Mischief was - It just felt like you never actually earned anything, it was tossed towards you for very little effort. The Kunark start i have advocated for years, because of the leveling zones that are completely under-utilized because when it normally drops, the vast majority are max level anyway. This is a very good call in my book. But once again, Truebox is stupid and by now i wont even feel bad about using VMs and whatnot to go around it, because it serves no purpose in modern days to outright waste electricity when you dont have to. They had a chance to show themselves as a progressive company, but missed the ball. I hope they end up scrapping Tormax or at least make a Teek clone with relaxed true-box from the start, because that would be immensely popular i am sure. In short, im lowkey excited to go back to playing EQ, but im also kinda pissed off at the people in charge that seem to never have played the game or be in touch with the playerbase.

Hey Redbeard, if you haven’t tested pantheon yet, you might want to. It has the core eq mechanics with Warcraft like spell animation. If it actually moves to live I could see it finally being the downfall of eq and wow. Try an enchanter on both eq’s, then try one on pantheon. The spell graphics alone seem more in line with the class.

XP debt still exists even in the modern game. Shards, though, yes - those were removed by the 2006 era stuff. Shared XP debt was long gone too because...ooo boy, the dumpster fire that caused was legendary lol.

I love Kunark, but as a step up from classic. Again, it is ironic that on the 25th anniversary they come up with probably the most un-nostalgic way to launch a TLP: tempt everyone to skip the normally most played leveling zones in the original game (b/c once Kunark came out, there were better options for all level ranges in most cases). So, will Unrest and Guk still be busy or skipped at the outset? Will Naggy and Vox be skipped too?

I'm sure this is a super unpopular opinion, but when I played on P99 Green and the server was still new, I felt like it was better before Kunark came out. I really enjoy playing in Guk / Sol B / Mistmoore / UR etc. when the loot is still relevant and good. Feels like after Kunark launches that a lot of the old zones are no longer relevant. As far as being able to make Iksars from day 1? Well, race changes are a thing on TLPs, so not really that exciting for me.

A lot of those old zones became dead because people had camped them for months and already picked up most/all of the items they wanted out of those places by the time Kunark released. Won't be that way this time around, which I think could be a really good thing.

Huh... I actually never played EQ2 (I suspect I'm not too terribly alone.) I've thought about trying it before, but always cooled on the idea after hearing about its far-advanced state. Maybe I will pay for a month to play the new fresh start thing... but I will wait to hear reports from the testers in May. :-) Not gonna pay to test! Thanks for the heads up.

I'm new to EQ in general, I first tried it on the Oakwynd TLP up to Velious and it was an interesting experience. Not great, as coming from more modern MMOs (specifically WoW) I felt a lot of the ridiculous spawns were terrible (I recall spending about a week trying throughout the day to get the guard for Testament of Vanear and a few days nonstop camping the ancient crocodile in Guk). Still, I managed to kill a few bosses (up to Plane of Sky and a few Kunark dragons including Trak andVS) and get my Druid epic before deciding it wasn't for me. I'm not sure about experiencing it again. EQ2 however I've never played and every time I've tried it's just so vast and overwhelming that I can't wrap my head around it. Seeing a server that's intending to be the game as it was in 2006, without (I assume?) all the crazy myriad systems that exist now, is tempting me a lot because all those abilities and things I haven't been able to get into it at all. I think, having seen EQ1, I'll be checking out that EQ2 server for a change of pace.

I've played every TLP since the Combine. After Darkpaw's lack of response to the oakwynd duping fiasco, I don't think I can summon the energy to care again. I used to kick off every TLP with a big station cash purchase and a bunch of krono to make up for the fact that i work 60 hours a week. That's just not gonna fly if they're not going to protect the economy.

Red, you hit some of the things that drove me away from EQ2 right on the head. The new server sounds like so much fun. I just may give that one a go. As far as EQ1 goes, it just sounds like the same old server, except you are getting fed Kunark sooner. I think they could have added something other than getting Iksars at launch to make it more exciting to play.

Eq2 was very difficult. So much so they made the game easier and nerfed a lot of things like 6 months after launch. A lot of people didnt get to experience vanilla vanilla eq2. It was slow. Most importantly the game was like 90% groupcentric. It turned a lot of people off sadly. Grouping in eq2 was a blast back in the day

ok first off, I thought the code was lost and a roll back couldn't happen... help me out here on what this new server really is and is not. secondly in 2006 the inquisitor AA line had double attack and you could turn your spells into melee attacks. witch was nerfed in or around 2008, so carpenters had to make nails, dowls, the pad probably a dye? no , a bracket to hold it all together? what Im saying is there was about 24 steeps to making one chair! is this going to be how it is in the new expansion? actually I voted for the new streamlined way it is today but the point is how this time lock is being marketed and what it isn't like. as for stats on gear. you were just starting to see + green mods on trash gear? no blue mods or teal color whatever, giving + to flurry or bonus to overpower to this and that.. no +100 to str at lvl 70 gear in 2006 it was more like +40 on fabled Death toll drops. we didnt have strike threw yet, simple stats say on an assassin were dex and int? for poison, its kind of hard to recall something given my multiple disability's from 20 years ago. but every 5 years or so I would replay a mew server just to get disgusted and leave, and I really didn't like the do 3 quests from the guy in lava storm get 3 coins? get 45? and buy a heirloom fabled from the vendor the old days you would grind with real ppl ( before AI replaced real ppl ) for 3 hours and maybe get 30% for a lvl if you were in CT with a solid group doing yellow heroic ^^^ mobs. I was an original player from the Kithicor server leader of multiple top ten positions on the server but only in the top 100 of the world of servers I was Rofellos Moxjet and Phyrexian age 47 now

this. I have a conspiracy theory on this by the way... That SOE specifically launches games that people like (that have high challenge), and once they have milked it dry they make it easier and easier until the game is complete garbage, then they release a new game that actually is challenging again, and the cycle repeats... Galaxies (super challenging and you had to figure out everything yourself) = huge success and lots of die hard fans Galaxies CU/etc (where everyone just starts off as a jedi, and tailored toward a casual audience) = push all your die hard fans off a cliff BUT WAIT... within a span of a few months SOE: EQ2 launches (super challenging, group content, perfect home for hardcore SWG fans) = huge success and lots of die hard fans EQ2 goes the way of WoW (group mobs get solo'ized, levels and currency are meaningless and you get max level within days) = push all your die hard fans off a cliff BUT WAIT... within the span of a few months SOE: Vanguard launches (made by the original EQ2 guys, take our word for it, it's for the hardcore EQ2 fans)... but that flopped so... they then switched gears to killing matrix online and pretty much running the company into the ground selling it to daybreak. tl;dr EQ2 was actually hard at launch. It's sad that they caved to the casuals.

​@@anonymous49125I agree. What made EQ1 so addictive and enjoyable for me was the very difficulty of it. Even today, I still play an Enchanter as my main, and we haven't been relevant since...2007 or so? I miss the forced cooperative play, the little spells that did funny or interesting things that had nothing to do with DPS, the incredibly intricate quests and faction systems that ran over continents and across expansions, the lore and quests. I remember unresolved questions to this day as to what this or that quest line truly entailed or meant, and some people did DEEP dives trying to figure out the most seemingly insignificant things; all because we loved it that much. We inhabited the world, we weren't tourists looking to min/max and move on. 🥲

The reason EverQuest II sounds more interesting is because there aren't really any good classic servers. Meanwhile Project 1999 and other legacy servers are sufficient enough and are better than TLP for EverQuest

I guess that depends on who you are - I cannot stand p99 at all, its just the absolute worst to play for me and TLPs have always given me far far more enjoyment and fun times than p99 ever did. I just dont have the time for the game to take forever and ever and a bit more to level, with zero QoL additions. P99 isnt better than TLPs, its just different and appeals to a different audience

The irony is their AMA basically showed that all of this is not where their dev time goes but the live game, that it kind of seems like they see live Eq and EQ2 as "the game" and this as just additional....I should make a video on it.

EQ2 had some brilliant ideas and mechanics in it. Too bad the game looked and ran like garbage... oh yeah, and WoW hit the market around the same era. It was such a perfect storm of disaster. They made a sequel that wasn't really connected to the original, had massive PC requirements, and launched it at the same time as a world-famous IP that could run on a toaster.

I remember how eq2 killed my pc at launch but I also being amazed at hoe it looked, especially animations. They went the realistic route and paid for it. The amount of systems that could play eq2 was pretty damn small. Still had a lot of fun with it for a few years though

In EQ2, KoS was HORRIBLE for the game and is where most of the WoW-ifying took place. You can teleport on boats pretty much everywhere for free, you have massive teleport hubs to get anywhere (so movement is super easy - no mount economy needed) Also this is long since group mobs were nerfed to cater to a solo experience (like hunting scarecrows in antonica, and clay golems in RoV, and so on and so on...). Unironically if they made a 2004 server (MAYBE 2005 for bloodlines, for the shiny armor), I would happily pay a subscription to play that again, hell, I would pay $100 box and $100 monthly for likely a year or more. But this is just a huge joke because by the time KoS came out the game was complete garbage, catering to WoW style casuals. GET AT ME WHEN THE QUESTS DIDN'T HAVE QUEST MARKERS OVER EVERYONE'S HEAD, AND WHEN YOU ACTUALLY HAD TO READ AND RESPOND TO NPCS TO MAYBE OR MAYBE NOT GET A QUEST.... that's the EQ2 that is sorely missed. ps only thing that they should change from the 2004 build is fix wards in the game, so they actually correctly mitigate damage...

respectfully disagree with the skill bloat... even like year 1 of EQ2, if you were using all your skills you were not playing correctly, or have a coercer in your group and you're not doing hard fights. Focusing on your role is crucial for mana management.

EQ2 was never that good of a game. which is another reason why WoW destroyed it. But to be honest. I am sick of Darkpaw milking TLPs over and over and over and over instead of making a new game. I am never going back to a TLP again. They are fun for about 3 weeks and then there is nothing left but mage boxers and no groups for anyone outside 1 or 2 raiding guilds.
