Everton 7 Southampton 1, Gary Speed hat-trick 1996

Gary Speed - good man, good footballer, good Evertonian.
Despite scoring on his debut, I didn't think Gary Speed fully found his role in the Everton team until this game. It wasn't just the hat-trick, it was his all-round performance; he clicked right into place in that game, running the show from midfield in a way which was to become commonplace for the man who would go on to become captain.
This clip is taken from the This Is Everton monthly video which the club produced for a few seasons in the mid-late nineties.

I was really saddened to learn of the death of Gary Speed. Came across as a decent bloke. A fine footballer, and looked like becoming a very good manager. He played against my team, Rangers, when he was a Leeds United player in the "Battle of Britain" in '92. RIP Gary.

wow this brings back good and bad memories, great result but i watched it with a saints fan who before the game said he will give me a dead leg anytime everton scored ( he was much bigger and stronger than me) so yeh basically me leg was a mess after this game lol, was worth it tho

Remember this game very well, one of the highlights of the 90's. Even though we were no world beaters then, the football played was WAY more exciting than the mostly dross we endure now. Gary Speed; a fine player, should have been at his boyhood club for many years, think he was let down badly by the club and certain individuals. Such a sad,sad shame. RIP Gary.

The club never let him down, it was the other way around. Lots of rumours about his lifestyle and was told to stop what he was doing or find another club. He moved to Newcastle for £5million and the rest is history

Never saw him play for us, unfortunately. He was still playing when I first got into football though, and I always liked him because every goal he scored seemed to be a screamer from distance. Good player, and he came across as a gentleman. I hope his family can recover from such a tragedy. RIP Gary.

One of my favourite players and who represents the british football so well. I was a fan of Gary Speed and always respected this player, and admired him. What a great player he was, he will never been forgotten. He is one of the greatest in the history of the English league. I'm still shocked and so sad about his tragic death. R.I.P.
