Yes: We British were sensible enough make nicknames of of the pre-existing names unlike the USA such as ''Vickee” for the Vickers machine gun, “Boysy” for the Boys anti-tank material rifle, “Red Cap” for the no.69 grenade based of the red Bakelite casing & so on. Pigsticker = No.4 Enfield spike bayonet is one of my favourites. Even in the Enfield's you had jungle carbine/jungle Enfield, long Enfield etcetera which is all pretty self explanatory. Bren, Sten & Lewis gun's is pretty stright forward & so don't nee nicknames. Mills bomb is pretty stright forward for a No. 5, No. 23 or No. 36 all defensive fragmentation grenades. Imagine calling everything a number like the Germans let alone everything as M1 like the yankee's. Logistics must have been a strung ball in bottle?

"The Haych-Cue's overrun, Captain!" For all the stick that the American actors get for mangling the various British accents/dialects, the first line of dialogue bodges Americans' accent & diction twice...though maybe it was intentional. And much as Americans imitating Brits cannot adhere to a consistent regional accent, to me the funniest part of this video is trying to guess what classic American movies served as the inspiration for each phrase, often with accent changes within the same dialogue line.

Then there are uniforms. People refer to the M1941 jacket, but it didn't receive an M designation, it was just "jacket, field, olive drab". Uniforms, where designated, were M plus year. Except for Air force and navy stuff - there was a B10 bomber and a B10 jacket which was for bomber crew. Army: we need a zip up jacket with knit cufffs. Air force: us too. Navy: and us. Let's all make slightly different ones so that the army has not enough and the air force has more than it needs but not let the army have any! Britain: they shall wear battledress whether it is suitable or not.

I remember hearing a story about how during the very start of the war alot of army personal especially the older veterans from ww1 didn't like how they had adopted the m1 garand over the m1903 but after the battles in Italy like anzio it was well favored upon but on the marines side they hated having the m1903 because they claimed it was "grandpa's gun" and I believe there's even a scene in the pacific where they say something along those lines but after the marines got the m1 garand it was also well received

Even when I was in back in the 80's I had pieces of equipment tagged M-1 and saw even more. I wondered who did the naming and if they could count without a hand.

Excellent video, I'm sure it was an exact portrail of events that really helped sometime in the early 1940s

They all also have a numerical designation for logistical purposes. Kinda like a stock code that stores and warehouses use. The name and number must match, or you'll get a tank turret delivered to an aircraft carrier because the numerical designation was written or read one digit off.

I'm gonna assume the captain here is an ancestor of General Brasch. riveting tales of heroism like taking out two german platoons, a heavy machine gun team, two snipers and cleared a bunker with nothing but a rocket launcher. Then he fired it at a tank.

6:02 - Is this the Girls und Panzer version of Johnny comes marching home? I've seen the movie so much that I could hear those xylophones during the "And we'll all feel gay when Johnny comes marching home"

Almost like people said things like "get me a knife/mg/rifle/carbine/grenade/tank/tank destroyer/field gun". Main people who had problems with the American naming system were, ironically, the Brits. Mostly because they had their own line of equipment, plus the American stuff. So they started coining nicknames, with most of them sticking. Most, because we still call a M3/M5 light tank a Stuart, not a Honey.
