"Moe" covers many things but at the very basic level it is the same feeling as what one can get after looking at a cute small puppy or a kitten. For example, a character suddenly acting all tsundere can be moe. A character acting and/or looking cute can be moe, .etc.
@zeemod155622 сағат бұрын
I think "moe" is sort of an emotion you feel while watching something. You can experience it in anime or real life. For instance: if you watch someone or something and their/its cuteness or youthfulness puts you at ease or in a state of happiness or gives warm fuzzy feelings, then you are experiencing "moe". Any slice of life or romance show that is designed to constantly illicit these feelings are called "moe" anime (although it's not a very useful term for genre). These types of moe anime usually have soft or round artstyles for their characters commonly referred to as "moe blobs" which emphasize abstract or deformed character designs that seem to undulate like blobs.

I'm not sure I agree with the 'moe explained' part. I always associate it with an extra cute art style like the main characters of Made in Abyss. Lucky Star's art style is what makes me think 'moe' so more of a chibi style with rounded features and big eyes(more so than the standard).
@Michaelfunderburk95Күн бұрын
Art style has nothing to do with troupes.
@Zeik56Күн бұрын
"Moe" characters or anime tend to gravitate toward that kind of artstyle, since they go together well, but that is not the true definition of Moe and you can have something be Moe and not be drawn that way.
@supereece1337Күн бұрын
The best way to explain moe is the feeling you get when you see like a puppy or something, and you get that "oh my God he's so adorable! I love him. I want him. I want to hug him and squeeze him and take care of him and just give him the world" feeling. The reason why it's associated with that cutesy art style is because it's way easier for cutesy characters to give you that feeling then say a sexy one. But, and this is probably the most point for moe, there are no sexual feelings when it comes to Moe, it is just the feeling of wanting to protect and love

Luke, *the Truck-kun trope is so common that a transport manager in Shizuoka accused the literal thousands of isekai (and non-isekai too) anime, manga and novels featuring the trope to have negatively impacted the reputation of logistics industry in Japan* to the point of citing examples of wives and parents disincentivizing young men to seek employment in the industry 😅 The reason so many isekai do that is likely because most isekai tend to try to replicate tropes from Mushoku Tensei (Jobless Reincarnation), in which the MC dies getting hit by a truck. KonoSuba, being known for flipping many common isekai tropes, had Kazuma die because he thought a truck hit him after saving a girl (because he's so used to the trope from being an otaku), when he actually died of shock from thinking he did 😆 In other words, Kazuma died because he watched too much truck-kun doing their thing in anime. *Trust me, when you delve into the world of isekai anime (there are about 5 to 10 getting released every 3 months, there are WAAAAY so many), most of them start with truck-kun or some variation of it.* Saga of Tanya the Evil replaced truck-kun with train-kun, but the point of the trope still stands, which is "MC gets run over and reincarnates in another world".
@Dan_Geer_Күн бұрын
Luke, the reason shows like Naruto did an 8 minute flashback, (which the guy in this video did not mention), is because they are an extension of the filler trope. The animators are using every trick they can to SLOW DOWN the action per episode because they have to keep pace with the manga that is being weekly released. The reality is they only have 10 minutes of actual new story, but they have to make it last the whole episode. While One Piece uses every trick in the book to slow down the pace in certain arcs, in most arcs they do a better job of it. But I would say that Naruto is easily the WORST offender in this respect, and they only got away with it because of how solid the base story is.

Taiga from Toradora, as well as pretty much every tsundere, matches that. Yor also can be considered "gap moe" since she's got that assassin side to go along with her usual moe side.

It's time to recommend Senki Zesshou Symphogear. The ANIME anime that have so many well executed tropes, that you sure gotta love it. The hype is real and through the roof, awesome main cast, well defined and varied villains, power of love and gay, one of the most unique power system in anime of song = power in which characters sing diegetically inside the show, so their VA rerecord it everytime for the new scene, etc etc. The evolution of the characters transformation sequences is fenomenal, you cannot compare last season henshin scene with the first one, its in the league of its own even compared to other anime. There's a tons of great self / pop culture references and fanservice in the show, and I don't mean sexual kind ones, but in the true meaning of the word "fan" "service" - giving the fans what they want to see. And my personal favourites are a certain adult character that could be easily put as one of the best father figures in anime, gotta love our big bear energy commander, a certain antagonist to comrade character that was done immaculate imo and the sweetest romantic relationship between the main pair, like that one absolutely mundane moment in s4 that I genuinly wish for every couple to experience, that is just love man.

Kirito is ABSOLUTELY overpowered. You have a high schooler who is not only the best tech guy in the world apparently, you also have someone that is beyond everyone in sword skills, negotiations, etc. He literally has *zero* flaws. OP MCs have evolved after him to become people like Cid and Ainz, but when you look at the traditional "Mary Sue/Gary Stu" Versions of OP characters, Kirito is the fucking poster child.
@yunfanjiКүн бұрын
I don't think Kirito is that OP. The author can use the scifi/game setting to input a lot of bs miracles but it is not the same as "I got isekai'd with 9000 levels above NPCs". In fact, many of his "OP" moments are him just bullying low leveled players but that's what happens in MMOs.
@cpMetisКүн бұрын
It's kinda funny how Kirito evolved in that way. He was never really that much stronger than his peers outside of like GGO specifically, and only really has a stupid power jump in the later quarter of Ordinal Scale. In all other arcs he's just a top level player comparable to anyone else, just with some extra x-factor to make him a tiny bit better like figuring out how to bypass ALO's sword skill limitations using game objects (which is basically just an exploit, and other people figured it out too). He's not even much of a prodigy tech guy. The "OMG HE DEUS EX COMPUTER HAXORED YUI BULLSHIT" was just him scrambling to use some admin commands that were already on the terminal before it logged itself out, not like he was digging around in cmd. He uses the admin access in ALO just by verbally telling it to change something that was a publicly known adjustable feature after he was changed to have admin perms. He never knew anything more technical about the Death Gun situation than "it's literally built to not do that". The thing he made for Yuuki is a bit hard to make but regular ass KZbinrs and Twitch streamers do it themselves too. He never actually knew the technical aspects of the STL, he just understood the overall concept. The anime will dramatize things to make him look like a tech genius, but he's basically only actually shown to be on par with a random guy who watches Coreteks on his second monitor while running a Minecraft server.

Well, filler arcs you are describing are quite common in older long running shonen. Sometimes these fillers arcs can be 20-30 episodes. The quality just varies. (most of them are decent, and get way too much hate honestly) A great way to understand the Moe genre is really just "cute girls doing cute things". Could be a group of adolescent girls going on a hike together, or a group working together to build something, etc) And honestly, flashbacks were great when watching Naruto when it aired. I would always forget a good chunk of the previous week's episode, so I needed those recaps lol

As someone who practises kendo, I can attest to the "yelling" trope. In kendo, which is similar to fencing in terms of the point system, you need to do three things correctly together to gain a point in a match: hitting the opponent on the correct body part, making the correct footstep, and finally, a loud enough yell. If the judges think your yell is too weak, they can legitimately not give you a point, because they wouldn't see it as an attack attempt from you. We're taught that yelling is mainly to strengthen our spirit, sometimes also to threaten the opponent, and we'd sometimes focus on yelling as practices as well, especially since a lot of people, me included, aren't used to just randomly shouting in daily life. In practice we usually shout out numbers in Japanese if we're repeating a certain strike. Or during mock matches, we'd yell the body parts which we're about to hit the opponent, including tou (head), kubi (neck), kote (forearm), and dou (stomach/waist). But in an actual match, you can just yell whatever you're comfortable with, doesn't even have to be words, can just be random sounds, as long as it's not offensive.
@animeguy1101Күн бұрын
21:20 yeah those types of Flashbacks are also considered filler, older animes like Naruto and One Piece like you brought up used them to fill out episode run time so less of a chapter had to be adapted. That’s why people say they hate filler in anime, they’re including the unnecessary flashbacks as filler not just the filler episodes and whole non manga arcs.

I think the "no dad" trope is so prominent in shonen anime is because it's a great way to set up the MC. A powerful dad is an obvious and easy way to explain why the MC is so special and powerful compared to his peers. However, if the dad is actually around, it begs the question of why the dad isn't take care of business and fighting the monsters instead of the MC. Having the dad be dead or otherwise absent solves that issue really neatly.
@MinisculeNeedsКүн бұрын
True. It would be hard to find a reason why an overpowered dad doesn't take care of things. That's why, when you find an anime/film/game/book that has an overpowered parent that is alive, it gives a nice change of pace. SPOILER I recently found a game that has this trope - dad is overpowered, but because of some circumstances he's unavailable, so his kids have to help and save the situation. It's called Trails in the Sky, it's a trilogy of games, a rather old ones.

Moe (Mo-eh) is hard to define, but here is my best attempt as a K-ON! fan. I think moe is like a feeling you get when watching anime and there is a character on screen that you find cute. Not cute as in "oh that's cute" but more like "wow, I just want to hug them and never let go because they're so cute". Cute anime girls are the most common moe characters. I think a good example of a moe character that you've seen is Bocchi. She's adorable and the feeling you might get from watching her on screen is that she is cute and you want the best for her. It's like the feeling you get seeing a cute child, however it is not exclusively for characters that are young or babyish.

Yeah, the explanation on moe is a bit lacking I feel like. Essentially it's excessive cuteness, think Anya from Spy Family. Also, for the filler thing: There is both, full on filler arcs that span multiple episodes, and single filler episodes that are just standalone. As for isekai: You forgot the start of Konosuba, did you. Also, technically same trope, but with a train for a change on Tanja. The thing is though, you've seen a lot of isekai that aren't tensei (reincarnation), and those that are had other deaths, or didn't have the truck hitting the MC in the story, but before it starts, like Mushoku Tensei.

I will say, I tend to prefer the one-off or at least mini arc types of fillers over the full-blown filler arcs. They're fun, short, and don't overstay their welcome, and if you don't like one week's episode, at least they'll be onto something else the next week. In my experience, much longer filler arcs tend to really drag, and there's moments where you can tell they're spinning their wheels to take up as much time as possible for the manga to get ahead. Plus, if you don't like the arc, it'll still be going on for whole months before it's done.

The term "tsundere" emerged around the year 2000 in Japan.There were characters with tsundere-like traits before, but the term itself did not exist yet. One characteristic behavior associated with "tsundere" is 口嫌體正直 (「口が嫌だと言っても、体は正直なものだ」, "Even if the mouth says no, the body is honest"). This refers to a character who verbally denies or rejects a certain action but still ends up performing or reacting in a way that contradicts their words. It is commonly seen as a manifestation of the "tsundere" personality. The concept first appeared in Taiwan, later spreading to China and eventually to Japan.

At least from my understanding, moe is just kind of the things that endear or attract you to a character, mostly cute things about female characters like the person said. There's a term called "gap moe" which is when you find a character appealing because there's a gap between how you expect them to act and how they really are, like if they look super tough and badass but are into cutesy things. The character Caesar from Zenless Zone Zero is a pretty good example of this with how she had that super cool biker fight scene in one trailer but then was picturing herself as the protagonist in a romance manga in another trailer.
@kuromiLayfeКүн бұрын
Moe is usually cute characters doing everyday things. (mostly high school girls but there are also Moe shows with boys, just not that common). Nah we are DereDere 😂 the issue with filler arcs is that it has to loop around to the point the filler started when the manga has caught up or you get really really weird inconsistencies (characters that became smarter during a filler suddenly becoming brain dead again as the main plot starts again etc).

The bad flashbacks are the naruto example you gave that was just replaying a clip from the previous episode or the infamous One Piece flashback, but that one was more of the way it was used than what the flashback was

My fave trope has to be when an MC that has kept their power secret or locked away is either forced to show off or loses their shit. Oh boy, here we go. "Moe" is a very broad term for anything - usually a cute female character, but not always - that inspires the desire to hug them and cuddle them and protect them from the world while squeeing over their adorableness. Most of the popularity of the "Cute Girls Doing Cute Things" slice-of-life subgenre can be attributed to moe appeal. It's a little broad of a concept to wrap your head around; you kinda just get a feel for it as you see it more.

Wouldn't want that fanservice to take you out of the moment while your watching DxD. Got to concentrate on that fine plot. Wouldn't want to miss anything important now. ☺

10:00 even a little bit is questionable considering how many times there has been intervention into his fights or outside context answers typically at a critical moment that led to him winning even his black color theme is overstated considering he didnt start that trend, its never been made a point of as a unique characteristic wholly his own that so many isekais actually does and simply there to highlight how much of a loner he was in the beginning, even when he grows out of it it simply remains as a preference

13:51 I’m waiting with watching it rn (as with so much), because I want to start my own reaction channel. But since I really love movies, series, anime’s and so on, I have already seen so much. I’m really nervous, because there is so much, I want to see, but can’t. Yet. So no f me 😉. I will definitely watch it in the future. (PS I love your videos.)

1:38 It's different with robot anime - even though they're inside mecha, they still yell their attacks because the attacks are actually voice-activated! They predicted Siri/Alexa years before their time! 🤯 4:30 Moe is the feeling that ya must protecccc her at all costs! 🤭 17:22 Blurred out is the 1st ED of *_"High School DxD"_* ......... which you've already seen, Luke! *_July 18, 2023 - Reacting to "HIGHSCHOOL DxD Openings & Endings (1-5)"_* 🤣 21:05 "Flashback" is a common animation trick to save animators time and money when they have to put out an episode every week continuously, especially back when anime used to run 52 eps or more. 8 minutes of flashback is 8 more minutes they don't have to animate that week! 🤑 25:56 Best Fanservice trope is the old wise man trying to sneak a peek or stealing underwear! 🤪

17:28 This is probably High school DxD's ending (usually the fanservicy stuff are endings rather than openings, to make sure you watch til the end :P)
@MkFilipe223 сағат бұрын
21:20 this type of flashback I would put in the "filler" category, since it's happening so the anime doesn't go too fast and catch the manga, or because of production issues.
@AlexyGC21 сағат бұрын
it is explain in the video, but still annoying if you see it many episodes a day today, not liking it starting anime today is not wrong, justifiable, but "bad" anyways
@crazizzle8520 сағат бұрын
Black clover has a cool filler arc, though it did drag on too long. But it addresses themes in the series the manga never explored throughly.
@kokodin5895Күн бұрын
as for my favorite trope, it would be clash of comon senses. where 2 characters consider different things as normal and see each other as aliens often fighting over the differences of normal good examples would be ika musume, or hare nochi guu. in both cases laws of phisics work different for mc and everybody else and most of jokes is build upon exploiting the difference or lack of it's understandiong. sometimes doing things impossible by the other person, it is very hard to explain but easy tonotice if you know you look for it
@Sinbad_DeityКүн бұрын
Saitama would be nowhere close to being the number one most overpowered character, or MC, that just shows your lack of anime/manga. 😂 They do have filler arcs, that span multiple episodes, that follows the same storyline, just like cannon episodes, and most filler arcs are never random, they mostly always make sense with the continuity of the series. The reason Naruto is so bad at flashbacks is because it's an old anime, it's literally as the guy stated in the video, to remind viewers who watch the show weekly, or people who have missed episodes. Also you can skip flashbacks, if you don't have the attention span for it, but that's probably something you won't do, since you're reacting to it, not that it makes a difference anyways.

They DO have filler arcs, but they are usually never liked. Biggest examples are Big 3 and DBZ. Only one I'm aware that's liked is a filler arc in One Piece

8:18 Luke you just barely saved yourself from the wife's wrath 😅. Good Job 😁, and if you love good dad characters "Reincarnated as a Sword" is best dad imo. And no I'm not trying to vote for anime anymore, there is no point. Yeah Naruto + Shippuden & one piece are atrocious with flashbacks have fun. 🤣

Moe isn't just "cute" (girls), it's "cute" (girls) doing "cute things" and relates to positive, childlike - not childish - qualities. And it is supposed to activate the synapses that fire when wanting to protect or nurture a child An OP MC? "Chillin' in Another World with Level 2 Super Cheat Powers". And yet it's far different from what you would expect! The first one, in 1982, to be killed by Truck-kun was Minky Momo. The typical magical girl anime was typically kid-friendly until then. It was a protest by the animators against their working conditions. The season hadn't ended yet, the network aired it and the producers came to an agreement with the animators to finish the season. Momo was brought back to life. Truck-kun became a symbol of victory for animators, so no wonder it was remember and reused. It is a natural way to get into a world away from their work-a-day reality into one more fulfilling Some of the dads (and/or moms) are working outside of Japan

What you were talking about on the flashbacks are actually recaps. Flashbacks are flashing back to a time the character remembers but we as the audience have never seen. One Piece has some of the best flashbacks/backstories in anime. I would actually add a separate trope called "tragic backstories" instead of lumping them with what he is referring to as Flashbacks.
