It was always a bit of a shame that the Clone Army was supposedly just 200,000 strong at the outbreak of the Clone Wars. People don't wanna hear this but it's literally just bad writing by George Lucas back in 2000-2001 prior to the release of AOTC Episode II in 2002, during production. 200,000 _is laughable_ for any kind of galactic army. The Republic isn't some peripheral rump state at least immediately before the Clone Wars - it is a league of literally thousands of star systems. Without a shadow of a doubt, there would be more planets in some way touched by the Republic (even if not part of it) than there were active, battle-ready clones in the First Battle of Geonsosis. No matter what anyone says, this _never made sense_ even if we remember that 'a million more clones' were 'well on the way'. The only way it remotely 'makes sense' is for the Grand Army of the Republic to be receiving fresh batches of around 200,000-400,000 per week, _at least_ and the idea of a million more coming in per month would be far more interesting. I've always seen it that way. Yes, the Rebel Alliance got by with minimal numbers, hefty plot armour, cellotape and well-wishes, for years, and somehow didn't get crushed by the Empire (though coming close several times) Numbers aren't everything - but that in itself belies the fact that the Rebel Alliance was surprisingly big by the end of the Galactic Civil War and could quite easily outnumber isolated Imperial forces like they did at Jakku. I get the idea that a small, mobile rebel force, can fight the Empire. But the CIS is not the Rebel Alliance and has to operate very differently - they are a contender to the throne in terms of their stance against the Republic. The Separatists outnumber the Republic easily in terms of military units, though the Republic and Jedi win on quality over quantity. Nevertheless, it is worth remembering that Napoleon's Grand Armee in the year 1812 numbered over 3/4 of a million men - and that was just _his_ army. The Roman Empire at it's height of power maintained forces of roughly 450,000 legionaries and auxiliaries, in a roughly 5 million sqkm Empire. 200,000 Clones would really be a decent systems army. The focus on Legions is partly to blame for this - with such heavy emphasis on individual legions like the 501st, the bigger picture of a realistic galaxy-wide war is inevitably obscured. Downplaying the CIS numbers has been going on since 2005, with some attempt to even the odds. The Clones are made out to have endless numbers fighting a practically unending number of even more numerous droids, but there you go - this is a confusion created by a deliberate lack of clarity on the numbers. Lucas and those after him didn't want to get bogged down defending this or that number, so he came up with a massively arbitrary number of '200,000' or charitably '1,200,000' in the short term, to make it sound like an impressive army. I wouldn't have a problem with it if these were just the starting prototype batches and that the real numbers were really going to aim for the billions. However elite the Clones are made out to be, it is laughable to think 200,000 Clone Troopers would begin a galaxy wide war. It'd be like Norway declaring war on NATO it's just stupid. Over 8,000 clones fell on Geonosis on Day 1 of the war, and I'm not entirely sure if that accounts for Republic Commando losses either. Over 180 Jedi (out of ~10,000-11,000 in the galaxy) perished that day too, mainly in the Petranaki Arena. Within weeks the Clones are fighting in massive battles such as Muunilinst and Hypori, sustaining appalling losses in the later disaster (where many Jedi fall too) The Clones are going to have large attrition rates. Childish notions of military strategy make it seem 'acceptable' if half an army is rendered casualties in year 1 of the war, but in real terms that would have disastrous consequences. Only a relatively small portion of a total military machine being destroyed by enemy action, would/could have massive impacts. E.G. Three Roman Legions being wiped out in the Battle of Teutoberg Forest was a major disaster for the Roman Empire, and yet it represented only a smaller portion of their actual numbers. The defeat in it's own right was a terrible blow. Obviously the Star Wars Galactic Republic is not the Roman Empire, but the point still stands. Catastrophic prestige value losses would be incurred by losing even just a small part of the GAR. This happened repeatedly the Clone Wars. The charitable interpretation is always going to be that Palpatine intervened and stopped one side or the other getting too successful, puppeteering the war to go the way _he wanted_ for the purposes of the Sith. The main reason the CIS didn't just use their 100 to 1 numerical advantages to crush the Republic in a matter of months, could be put down to Palpatine's meddling. Obviously he never gave a damn about the Separatists and was just using them as 'Disposable Fall Guys Number 1' along the 'Disposable Fall Guys Number 2' in the Republic. They were both his pawns. However, the point remains; 200,000 is just a weirdly small number for such a gigantic conflict. The only way it makes sense is if it is explained that these were just the front-runners and that in reality the Clones were coming through in the tens of millions by year 2. Otherwise, the drastically greater Droid numbers look too suspiciously held back and reserved. Sure, the Clones will and did absolutely ratio the deliberately dumbed down Droids in battle, yet the sheer overwhelming number of them should have been obvious. When General Grievous tries to use _The Malevolence_ to go after 60,000 injured clones at a medical space station facility, the fact that it was considered absolutely shattering if Grievous managed to kill 60,000 Clones in a day should clearly show that Disney has not done much to rectify and solve the numbers problem. 60,000 injured clones being killed would be a tragedy don't get me wrong, I'm just saying, if the GAR had hundreds of millions of Clones like it should, then the reality of that particular situation would be more localised and not as appalling in the wider strategy of the war. In WWI, on the Western Front _alone_ over 50,000 men per week were being killed. At those rates of loss, the first wave of the GAR would be gone in 1 month, on the Western Front alone. This is obviously horrendous, I'm just making the point that in a *galaxy wide war fought on thousands of worlds for 3 years* that the losses would be, worse, so so much worse. We're talking hundreds of millions to billions killed, with even more civilian casualties in the crossfire. In the Siege of Leningrad alone, over a million people died, in WWII. In the Summer Offensives of 1918, over 2 million casualties were seen on all sides. There would be situations like this all over the galaxy. No, the warfare wouldn't be exactly the same as WWI or WWII tactics and certainly not tech, but the thing is, based on what we see in Star Wars, most of what is going on seems to be based around bog standard light infantry tactics. When you boil it down, the losses are still gonna be horrific. Star Wars Clone Troopers and Stormtroopers are hardly IoM Space Marines or Forerunner Prometheans, or even UNSC Spartans. They are going to be falling in tragic numbers. Clone Troopers are better infantry than most and have many specialist roles from their pilots to their engineers, but the reality is that most of them are riflemen, trained for infantry tactics in both ground and boarding assaults. Aerial tactics come in with units like the 212th Attack Battalion, and the abundance of LAAT/i Gunships makes for a strong suit in the air assault department. However, the CIS can often match them in space battles and in terms of leadership quality. The Republic has more powerful warships and more powerful heavy ground vehicles/armour, but the Droids can pump out a lot more medium armour and a lot more cheaply too. The fact is that the Droid B1s are pretty poor, but their sheer numbers make them unnervingly dangerous contrary to their stupid seeming ways. Clones will ratio them - and Jedi definitely will, to a laughable extent - though the Jedi are 10,000-11,000 dwindling space wizards with energy swords that are really a specialised peacekeeping elite that are neither a true army, nor enough to win the war on their own. During TCW series, it is seen as a 'back-breaking' plan for 5 million extra clones to be ordered by the Senate. Padme and others fight against this military creation act with vigour, as they want to avoid the deregulation of the banks (yawn...thrilling story line, not -.- ) But the fact is, that 5 million extra clones shouldn't even come close to destablising Republic finances _that much_ it's crazy. It comes down to a huge misunderstanding since 2002's Clone numbers on Geonosis, with people making excuses apologetically for Lucas's shoddy writing. It's literally that simple and why this is hard to grasp is strange. If Lucas turned round by the release of ROTS and said 'yeah but you do realise that 200,000 was like the first 0.1% of the first year's clones coming into service?' then it would make a whole lot more sense.

I get story-wise they needed for it to be order 66 to find out about the chips, but from a non story perspective, it leads me to definitely infer that if a chip is failing order 66 is used as a last ditch effort for a clone to take out a Jedi.

I'm wondering about the unit sizes in these militaries. Considering these are galactic wide conflicts fought over planets, how large is a battalion, legion, or regiment? Given these terms are used for a fictional army I imagine they are of similar numbers in our own universe, but I cannot imagine a regiment of a couple thousand clones battling it out with a sea of droids over an entire planet.
@occam7382 Жыл бұрын
Legions, or technically Brigades, were around 9,200 men strong. Each brigade was made up of 4 Regiments, and each regiment was made up of 4 Battalions. And yes, that scenario you just mentioned happened a lot during the Clone Wars. Sometimes it was literally just single battalions or even companies assigned to handle entire droid armies because the clones were just that outnumbered. Sh*t was wild back in the day.

I remember as a 7 year old watching the Umbara arc episode after episode as it aired and it made me think how amazing this already amazing group of clones were. Even with a leader like Pong krell who was deliberately trying to send the clones to their deaths, the 501st still fought to the bloody end and managed to come out on top. It was an ingenious arc and made me realise that there is often little honour on the battlefield

@@sentinal_entity, I wouldn't say the Jedi were the "villains" (that's obviously Palpy McScrotumface), but they had definitely lost their way and forgotten who they really were when they got caught up in the Clone Wars. I think that by war's end, there were really only a few Jedi who still truly held up to their ideals despite the galaxy's situation, and one of them wasn't even a part of the Order.

The 501st was sent into some of the biggest and most important battles in the war. The Reason why was thanks to skywalker being a good and competent leader. Because of that they were very effective in accomplishing their missions.

Hey Generation Tech! Love the content and binging older videos inspired me to watch all Star Wars media in chronological order. That being said, I just finished Rebels and found some of the force based characters and plot points like Bendu and the Lothal wolves to be super interesting. Any plans to create more content based on the pre original trilogy galactic Civil War Era or go in depth on Rebels like you have with Clone Wars?
