Brokeback Mountain should've won in 2005. Crash was good but that film was a masterpiece and defined an era. Ledger and Gyllenhaal were perfect.

Ms. Retro I disagree. Personally I hate Brokeback Mountain. I thought Heath Ledger was awful in it. I couldn't understand anything he said. I thought it was a really boring film and their relationship escalated too quickly. However I did think that Ang Lee deserved his Oscar for Best Director and the Cinematography was beautiful, but (and I know I'm in the minority) I thought Crash was a brilliant film and deserved the Oscar.

What shit me up was that he was a normal person and got suckered into brutal slavery. It's almost horror in a sense. Then you add the fact that it's real, it sinks in. It happened, probably far more than we know of. Imagine the compounded quantity of grief and pain felt by people who were suckered into slavery like this. Too much.

I adore La La land, I loved everything about it and thought me to aspire to make my dreams come true which has actually been happening since I saw the film, just needed that push. But then Moonlight was so damn good, it made me feel emotion and anger but then also realizing we need to be more empathetic and compassionate to one another. So either one of those I hope wins the best picture.

Just so everyone's clear, the year that is put next to the movie title is the year it was RELEASED, NOT the year it was nominated and won. The year they got nominated for and won the Oscar is the year that followed. For example, the movie Shakespeare In Love (1998) was released in 1998 and took the Oscar home for Best Picture in 1999.

Douglas Gorti Ever since Gravity in 2013 (as far as I know), the Academy has always nominated one science fiction film, with Interstellar, The Martian, and now Arrival. It's hard to say whether the Academy "cares" or not considering that these films usually win something in the effects departments, but I don't think they'll win Best Picture anytime soon. Although, I do wish Arrival had won- and I do wish Amy Adams had been nominated, but what can we do?

It's cool seeing the evolution of movies through this. I like how Gone With The Wind shows up in colour and then it's black and white for the next couple movies. Despite how old they are, all these movies are amazing. Amazing story telling is something that was always there no matter how far you go back. People have always had creative imaginations while discovery came along the way.

As an old guy (70+) I've seen most, but not all, of these films. Looking back it is just my opinion that 2 of the top 10 movies ever made were "The Best Years of Our Lives" (Oscar winner) & "Treasure of the Sierra Madre" (nominee but lost to "Hamlet"). I also think "Lawrence of Arabia" was a great film.

Each Star Wars movie has been nominated for at least one Oscar. So far, the only ones to have ever won any are the ones from the Original Trilogy (Star Wars (1977/won in 1978), The Empire Strikes Back (1980/won in 1981), and Return of the Jedi (1983/won in 1984)).

For every really great movie on here, there's 3 or 4 very forgettable ones that no one would remember if it weren't for their best picture status. This isn't to say there are a lot of bad movies on here, just a lot of movies that have not proven to be timeless. I think The Artist is a good example of this, it was a very fun picture that I think deserved the award, but now just a few years later everyone's forgotten about it. I think in a decade's time it will only be of interest to people looking to watch all the best picture winners. It's not a bad movie, it was just only really great for that one moment, and tbh I think that's La La land too. La La land was a lot of fun, and it deserved every award it got, but honestly I'm glad Moonlight won because I'll be very surprised if La La Land's popularity holds at all. Like the Artist, they were both movies that just copied the style and aesthetics of another era in film. A modern film in a vintage style is very exciting to see in the moment and that's why the films gathered so much hype and applause. But with time, when those films cease to be modern and become vintage themselves, they lose that appeal, and I think the mindset becomes why see a movie trying to be a silent era comedy when you can watch an actual silent era comedy, and why see a movie trying to be a golden era musical when you can watch an actual golden era musical. I think The Artist and La La Land were good films and were lovely homages to times past, but originality makes films timeless, not nostalgia.

TheDude4077 I don't agree with you for the following reasons: Everybody, even those who don't keep up with best picture winners know what 'La La Land' is and fall in love with the film. If you ask anybody who doesn't keep up with the Oscars, the majority don't know what 'Moonlight' is. If they watch 'Moonlight' they'd like it but hardly anyone who isn't a movie buff has seen it. 'La La Land' has prevailed, 'Moonlight' is slowly being forgotten.

I wouldn't say movies are getting better though, but we're getting more great movies. But we hardly give a shit for masterful directors these days. We're better at the making of movies now, but most people either try to force emotions, make political statements or make a sequel/part 2. Also there are great movies from the past like Lawrence of Arabia and The Godfather which haven't been topped in my eyes. 2000s had some greats like No Country for Old Men though, and there are a lot of great movies this decade. La La Land, Boyhood, Inception, some great movies, but there are legendary movies that aren't surpassed.

The only ones i think should`ve won are: 1936: Mr deeds goes to town (instead of the great ziegfield) 1941: citizen kane (instead of how green was my valley) 1944: double indemnity (instead of going my way) 1952: high noon (instead of the greatest show on earth) 1963: lilies of the field or cleapatra (instead of tom jones) 1964: Dr strangelove (instead of my fair lady, awesome movie tho) 1965: dr zhivago (instead of the sound of music, awesome movie tho) 1968: the lion in winter (instead of oliver) 1969: midnight cowboy is fucking awesome, but Z and butch cassidy and the sundance kid ware also a great films too! 1970: patton is great, but MASH was also incredible. 1971: A clockwork orange (instead of the frech connection, awesome movie tho) 1976: literally any other movie nominated that year was better than rocky, especially network and taxi driver 1978: the deer hunter was excellent, but both midnight express and coming home deserved it more. 1979: apocalypse now (instead of kramer vs kramer fucking incredible movie tho!) 1980: i loved ordinary people, but the elephant man was better (raging bull was great too) 1982: i`m cool with gandhi winning, but i also really loved missing, the verdict and E.T 1985: Literally any other movie nominated that year was better than out of africa, specially kiss of the spider woman and the color purple. 1989: driving miss daisy is awesome, but i think born the 4th of july deserved it more. 1990: goodfellas (instead of dances with wolves, great movie tho) 1994: forest gump is INCREDIBLE, but the shawshank redemption deserved it more, also quiz show and pulp fiction were great, but not better than forest gump. 1996: fargo (instead of the english patient, great movie tho.) 1997: literally any other movie nominated that year was better than titanic, especially L.A confidential. 1998: Literally any other movie nominated that year was better than shakespeare in love, especially saving private ryan, la vita e bella and the thin red line. 2006: letters from iwo jima (instead of the departed, awesome movie tho) 2010: the social network or true grit (instead of the king speech, awesome movie tho and winters bone, 127 hours and inception were great) 2016: This year was great for movies, one of the best (except for hidden figures, that movies is pretty bad) but i hope La La Land wins, it´s a marvelous film, and it has become my favourite film of all time, i just love it; hawksaw ridge hell or high water, moonlight, lion, arrival and manchester by the sea (fucking AWESOME film) really are works of art, but la la land is the best movie i´ve seen in a long time, and movies are my life, i´ve seen a lot and i also go to film school and want to be a director myself.
