I have been married to a Hindu Punjab guy for 28 years. We are happy for the most part, but since I am a Caucasian european (nurse) and he is the a lawyer , my in laws have never really approved of me. My in-laws are wealthy business people. They follow traditional aspects of their culture to suit themselves. For example, when their own daughter got married into a family of substantial means, my father in law read the riot act to their daughter’s in-laws, being very clear in what his expectations of them were towards their beloved daughter. She too is a lawyer and my father in law cautioned her in-laws that his daughter’s earnings were to remain exactly that; hers. She was not to spend a single penny of her money on anything. Not the same rules for me sadly. My husband gave up law soon after we wed and joined his father in the family business. We decided to continue the family tradition of sending our kids to private school. Even though my in laws live in a £4.5 million house in London, and own a substantial property portfolio, my in-laws claimed they couldn’t afford to pay for my kids education through their business and that I had to contribute. This meant that for 18 years (nursery, preschool, school and high school) my nurses low earnings 100% went to the school. I was completely penniless. This is all while they continued to prosper and invest their profits in buying properties around London at Housing Auctions. They always maintained that they “couldn’t afford school fees” but yet they had cash in their banks to buy numerous £500+K houses at auction? To add insult to my predicament, my father in law would sternly and shamelessly caution me not to tell anyone in our social circles that I paid the school fees, especially not their beloved daughter’s husband, in case he would start demanding the same from her. Now they are elderly and my mother in law has just been discharged from hospital after sustaining a broken hip. They want me to fulfill my “Duty” and care for her. Duty? Me? They gave me nothing but poverty and suffering all these years! Even the home that I live in is not mine. I have had zero status all these years, and now I’m the most important person to them? They have recently became less antagonistic and critical. They are sweeter and welcoming. All too little too late and sneaky in my opinion. They need me and are scared. Care for them? Me? They will be waiting an eternity for me to do that. Me? Care for those who caused me destitution, depression and misery? Over my dead body. They can now spend what they saved on me on a maid. Let their daughter whom they ferociously protected all these years pay them back by caring for them. Let her give up her job and be their maid. To whom they gave and cared for will return to them in kind. Whom they used and financially abused will not be lifting a finger. Not a drop of sweat. I owe them nothing. I HATE them.
