Ooh we have similar tastes in books. I've read 30/65 of these, although in different years. Some of my favorites are The Remains of the Day, Our Wives Under the Sea, the seasonal quartet by Ali Smith, Metamorphosis, and The Vegetarian, Things We Lost in the Fire, and the Neapolitan novels by Elena Ferrante (they get progressively better)

What a fun way to wrap up your year of reading ! I read The Vegetarian and absolutely loved it. I still have Babel on my shelf to get going on.

Babel was one of the most disappointing books I have read. The idea is sound, but the characters are weak and flat and the whole thing is a mere vessel for the authors bitter and racist views on colonialism, to the point where it became tiresome.

@@karenwetherald6086 it’s rarely spoken about, for obvious reasons, but it’s definitely there. I don’t want to say it’s a book praised on the basis of it’s ‘woke’ merits because I hate that phrase and concept, but you get the idea. It’s a shame because you can see Kuang is a technically gifted writer.

Do you know the author Casey Plett? She’s a Canadian trans woman who has won some writing awards and nominations. Her three fictional works, two short story collections and a novel, are all loosely connected with a few repeating characters, but it isn’t necessary to read them in any specific order. ‘A Safe Girl to Love’ is her first short story collection and mostly follows the lives of a bunch of chaotic young trans women in their twenties. ‘Little Fish’ is a novel about a woman in her early thirties that discovers that her mennonite grandfather might have been trans like her, but this is mostly background hum to her everyday life, which is what the majority of the story revolves around. And her most recent short story collection, ‘A Dream of a Woman’, which is similar in concept to her first collection, but published 7 years later, and mostly follows characters around their thirties. A Safe Girl to Love is probably my favorite of the short story collections, probably because a lot of the characters are around my own age, and it was the first book of hers that I read, and it made me fall in love with her writing. But I also adoreeee Little Fish, because Casey Plett has the ability to make you connect with her characters to the point of feeling hollow when the story ends, and Little Fish, being a novel, lets you stay with them a bit longer. Little Fish also just has so many memorable moments that I can’t stop thinking about. If you ever wanted to read some slice-of-life literary fiction by a trans woman I guess haha.
