+Anton St I'm sure someone has already thought of this but if you tune your g string to g# this becomes much much easier to play. Works perfectly. The f# position is the only tough one but its not that bad. trying to play this like this ( the way Andy Summers does it) I find to be way too hard for my fingers. I can do it but its just so much easier to play by tuning up to g#

I always remembered Andy Summers as a ES-335 player. There's a nice short video on KZbin (Andy Summers - Police guitar riffs) with him showing how he came into playing his style in "Message in a Bottle" and "Every Breath You Take" in their basic forms. It was really helpful for me in learning this song. Especially the "Message in a Bottle" part. Great stretching exercise if nothing else. Thanks Justin.
@phantasiai10 жыл бұрын
I remember my beginner guitar teacher in highschool 'taught' his class how to play Every Breath You Take. More like, "Here's a few beginners chords I put together." He told us it's just G, Em, C, D, and G repeated throughout the song with a down, down, down down down down strumming pattern. I always wonderes, what version did he hear?

Work the song out with a capo on the 2nd fret. You will be amazed at how easy it is to play. Only the A and the F#m parts will be played differently. The rest of the song will be played the original way...except the F bar chord will change to an F chord on the 8th fret. Hope that helps you.
@Flanagan1210 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot, I will definitely try this!
@StephanieL18010 жыл бұрын
There's a much easier way to play this. It's a little harder to explain, but so much easier on the fingers - you'll never have to do a stretch bigger than 3 frets and don't need a capo. Essentially, all you need to do is move the notes played with the pinkie finger to a higher string. So... *For the first chord*: middle finger, 5th fret, E string. Little finger, 7th fret, A string. Index finger, 4th fret, G string. Last note is ring finger, 6th fret, G string. *For the second chord*: middle finger, 2nd fret, E string. Little finger, 4th fret, A string. Index finger, 1st fret, G string. Last note is middle finger (or index finger), 2nd fret, G string. *For the third chord*: Google image search a chord diagram for the Dsus2 shape at the fifth fret. Hold down that shape, then play the _strings_ in this order - A, D, B, D, G, D, A, D. *For the fourth chord*: Exactly the same shape as the third chord, but at the seventh fret.
@robbiegadeguitar10 жыл бұрын
Nice......The only thing that I do differently is use my ring finger on the 6th fret G string during the first part while on the A chord. The move is a little easier for me than using my middle finger. I like playing it this way better because it is easier to let some of the notes ring out. Thanks for the tips.

Thanks Justin for the middle finger secret. I literally hurt a ligament in my wrist playing this song 5 nights a week in clubs in the 80's. I found a little cheating trick by putting a capo on the 2nd fret. That makes it so much easier for players who just can't execute the stretches (especially on the F#m). Your method makes it possible for me to play it without pain. Are there any shortcuts to Message In The Bottle?

Great lesson Justin (as usual). I'm having difficulty however with the A & F#m finger placement as with a lot of people commenting here - my problem is not so much the stretching but my little finger keeps muting the string below it forcing me to lift the pinky off and on. I have come up with a solution that works for me as follows: "A" chord finger placement: A-0, D-2, G-4, B-2 "F#m" chord finger placement: Low E-2, A-4, (D-1 & D-2 alternating) now i see adlovett98 had the same idea
