Small corrections: "Debtor Club" actually plays over the scene of him calling various industry folks. "Ever After", a song from Superbia, plays in the advertising group. (there was a little bit of confusion over the order of the songs in the credits, but they're in order of appearance in the film.)

Lin's tweet "As long as I've got a job, you've got a job." is a reference to a famous West Wing line, a show Lin's has mentioned being in love with many times and that stars Bradley Whitford who played Sondheim.

Yes! I picked up on that West Wing reference too. It was said to Bradley’s character by the chief of staff character who dated Joanna Gleason’s character on the show! A stretch perhaps but still an indirect nod to Sondheim who cast her in the original Broadway cast of Into the Woods. 😉

For someone who knows zero about musical theater, TTB and videos like this have been fun to watch. Broadway seems to be more of a community than industry, and you can feel that in Lin-Manuel's film like the heat off a bonfire. It'll be years before the last Easter egg is found 😄

I feel terrible, because I watched Tick Tick Boom over my Thanksgiving vacation break, and nowhere in my alerts did it pop up that Stephen Sondheim passed away. As soon I found out days later, I dropped to my knees and cried. Being a New Yorker and having such a personal connection to Broadway and Off-Broadway alike (my time in Rocky Horror), I feel like I've disappointed my idols. I love John and everything he did, imagine a couple in a car trying to sing Therapy word for word without any lyric sheets, and Sondheim, Stephen Sondheim is a man beyond words. If God was a playwright, he'd be Stephen Sondheim, and I know they're looking down on all of us, the hopeful and pessimistic alike, and are just spitballing ideas off each other up there for hilarious and insightful commentary on life and its follies. All I can say is there is a mix of tears, both of love and sadness, in the loss of our Broadway icon, but Sondheim and Larson are unforgettable, or in another word, immortal, and will love through their work, inspiring many generations to come. Rest in Paradise, Mr. Sondheim.

Whitford does something so good with his portrayal - it feels at first like caricature because it is so distinctly Sondheim, but it feels natural because Whitford commits to the bit. No winks or nudges, just this idiosyncratic genius that doesn’t really get that he’s way too much of a genius to be this personable and warm. I’d watch an entire movie of Whitford as Sondheim at dinner parties.

I did not think there’d be that much connection to everything and it just makes this movie so much more beautiful. Like a full picture of his life rather than just that period of time. I feel like I should mention this because I don’t see anyone talking about it, but Jennifer Ashley Tepper was the historian consultant for the movie and I swear there couldn’t have been anyone better for that. She’s written tons of books about stories from Broadway and she created the Jonathan Larson Project (which has a recording of Rhapsody, White Male World, and the extra song Stay out of my Dreams and many other songs that Larson wrote but never got to record. It’s very good, and I’m rambling now). I just think that it’s cool that there’s so much care put into something, which I know should be the norm for biographical films but it’s still refreshing to see. Loved the video! Made me cry over a man I never met all over again EDIT: Also, that part where he says to the guy “I’m the future of musical theatre” was apparently a thing he actually said to someone. Don’t remember where I read that but yeah (take it with a grain of salt my memory is awful 😅)

This vid is epic - great work!! TTB IS EPIC. LinMM is a genius and his film and it’s pastiche of Broadway magic and meaning, specific to inspiration and final years of JL, is incredibly touching - it’s a dramaturg’s dream - and brings home SS’s adage “No one is alone”. Even though JL might have felt that way at the time. Lin continues to give us hope. My fav Easter egg though (if it is one) comes at the end when JL is singing in C-Park, remembering the good times with his friend Michael, who’s just come out as being HIV positive. He sings, remembering those times with Michael at musical theatre camp, drilling songs over and over, til they got it “ri-ight”… Well, Robin DeJesús’s first big gig was in Todd Graff’s movie CAMP, where he ALSO played a Michael… a boy, coming to terms with his sexuality, crushing on his best friend (who he also sings with), before they get a surprising visit from Sondheim. Now, I don’t yet know how that connects to JL’s story specifically if at all… but I LOVE LOVE LOVE the synchronicity. Epic.

a couple i noticed! "when is later" is from "Later" in A Little Night Music "write what you know" is an idea from the Merrily We Roll Along book - Frank praises Charley for writing what he knows (in the final scene), and gives the same advice to a young writer (in the first scene)

OMG! So Lin Manuel Miranda call ALL his friends in Broadway to do his film in hommage to Larson. Wonderful. I love this movie. It is just fantastic. I hope Andrew Garfield and the movie will win an Oscar. I must admit I love musicals but as I dont live in the US (I’m peruvian and I live in France) most of those icons of Broadway were unknown for me, we have musicals here too in French or in english but sing by sometimes unknown singers so I knew the songs but not the stories behind. Thanks you for the explanations in this video. I feel like I have a lot of catch up to do :)

Amazing! Thanks for putting this all together for us! I love Lin’s attention to details like this. It makes all of his projects so great. And the original Moondance Diner was moved to LaBarge, Wyoming?? I’m from Wyoming! I had no idea there even was a LaBarge, but if it’s over near Jackson, wonder what they’re doing with it… or does it just sit? Hmmm, gotta research that now LOL

@@HowardHoMusic I thought I wrote something back a few days ago about what I found about the Moondance Diner in Wyoming and now I don’t see it 👀 I’ll try to remember what I found lol Basically it sounds like they used it as an actual diner for years and it was fixed nicely and then something happened and changed ownership and it hasn’t been used for a few years. Which is quite sad; I do hope that someone will purchase it and fix it back up. Maybe after Covid decided to calm down and tourists come back a little more 😊
