There are way too many cars in Copenhagen, cause of high public transit ticket prices, lack of trams, and terrible bike infrastructure.
@ncard00
@ncard00 7 ай бұрын
Copenhagen desperatly needs trams in the city centre. The metro hasn’t reduced car traffic in the city centre at all, all the busses still running get stuck in traffic all the time, and Copenhagen also has the busiest bus line in all of nothern europe, the 5C, with 15 million riders, after covid, but instead, a light rail line is being built in the suburbs, replacing a busline with only 3 million annual riders.

As a resident (and transport nerd) of Copenhagen, i know a lot about the public transport. Here's 3 facts that i often get the "u wot" in british train people i know: The Ansaldo Breda (Now Hitatchi Rail Italy) Driverless Metro trains, were first introduced in here in Copenhagen in 2002. Since then, they've made the same model for other cities, such as Milano in Italy and soon, Toronto in Canada. Currently, we have generation 1 running on M1 and M2, Generation 5 on M3 and M4, and Generation 6 on M1 and M2. (The latter entered service last year) The Train you rode from the Airport to Ørestad station, is the Øresundståg, the last train built of the Flexliner family, originaly invented by DSB Design Architects in the 1980s. Within this design, is the IC3 DMU and the IR4 EMU. The two can couple into one consist, making DSB the ONLY train operator in the world to have Diesel trains and Electric trains coupled in one consist on a daily basis, and has done so for over 20 years! Just a few of many facts i know about our unique public transport system

One of the advantages of living in Copenhagen is that you don't need a car to get around. You can get from A to B in no time by bus/train/boat. Cars are quite expensive here in Copenhagen compared to the US and sometimes costs as much as renting a place. I live in the Copenhagen area and have never owned a car and don't plan to own one.

But the S train system needs an expresstunnel, to greatly reduce travel time, increase capacity, and serve the Copenhagen main hospital with proper rapid transit, compared to the current bus lines, which are overcrowded and delayed all the time.

The M4 line wasn’t open yet when I was there. Looks like it is a good addition. Although I didn’t have any trouble getting around using public transit, I was a bit puzzled about why the M1 and M2 seemed to follow basically the same route.
@drdewott9154
@drdewott9154 Жыл бұрын
Well the M1 and M2 was built as one system, sharing the same line in the heart of the city where the demand is strongest, and splitting apart once on the island of Amager to serve different parts of the island. The M1 serves the western part that has been reclaimed from the sea in the past. That area features the brand new "Ørestad" neighborhood. The idea of the Metro in Copenhagen is that 1/3rd of the construction costs will be paid back through sale of land along the lines to developers while the remaining 2/3rds will come through ticket sales and be paid back to the government to pay back the loan used to build the lines. However they've never been able to sell enough land at a high enough price to cover their share of the costs, partially due to the land selling for lower than anticipated, and because of stuff like endagered animal species being found on undeveloped pieces of land near the Metro. So the development agency has to find more pieces of land elsewhere to pay back their share, which in many cases is far from the Metro, or involves overturning government nature protection through lobbying. Either way they cannot receive high enough profits from land sales in these new areas without promising a Metro line there too, and so the cycle continues. In that sense the Copenhagen Metro has turned into a Ponzi scheme of constantly passing on the costs that none of the authorities are willing to pay.

@@drdewott9154 Kind of shows the weakness of modern type of financing- not having it fully locked in but that much of it is in fact based on speculation and prone to failure. So not only are project costs often underestimated, but their financing projections overestimated with little buffering room given in the budget.

I like to add. U are allowed to bring ur bike on the trains, which is super flexible. On S-trains it is free, on other trains like Metro and Regional u need pay about half a ticket price i think. Fine for beeing caught without valid card/ticket are huge, I think over 50 euros for bike and 100 for human. Great plug for CPH! No needs for car. Fun Metro facts: it’s one of only three or four 24/7/365 metro’s in the world, it was built with skylights to make it feel safer (not descending into the underground- and it works), it does not have a holding area below as you walk directly to/from the platform to either your train or back up (again making it much safer - no long unsavoury tunnels etc.), it has the shortest distance from street entrance to train door of any metro in the world.

However, there is a time frame, such as rush hour, when this is not possible. This video was good and informative 👍🙂 Could you make a video about how Copenhagen got house numbers?
