If I had a nickel for every time Great Adventure had a stand up, I'd have two nickels. That isn't a lot, but its interesting that it happened twice.

Kingda Ka was the best defunct ride. I’m really sad they’re getting rid of it. It definitely will be the most missed defunct ride. R.I.P. The King. First time I rode was in 2015 and I loved it right away because of how fast it launched. I actually closed my eyes the whole time and then like a year later I rode it with my eyes open and it was so mind blowing especially when you get to the top of the hat and get a brief second to see the view of the parking lot. This was definitely a favorite ride of mine and it will be missed so much. El Toro is number 1 and this was ranked number 2. Thanks for a great 9 years of childhood.

Kingda Ka will be missed for sure. As someone who grew up going here, this video made me smile. I was in high school when Batman & Robin The Chiller opened, and yes - the Batman side with the inverted top hat was way better than the Robin side. Viper also wasn't quite as bad as people make it out to be today, the first drop had great airtime. Scream Machine was both fun and painful, but I miss Rolling Thunder the most, especially the left side track, which was wilder and more unpredictable than the right.

Great American Scream Machine, Rolling Thunder, Batman & Robin: The Chiller, Kingda Ka & Viper are the only Defunct Coasters that I’ve ridden in my childhood 🥲🥲🥲🥲 I miss those rides so much. Green Lantern I only rode it once & that was it for me. I can’t stand Stand Up Coasters tbh. 2005-2007 Era of Great Adventure was the Best!!

Great Video, I was happy I got to spot the Looping Starship while watching the Great American Scream Machine vid. I can remember where 12 of the 15 were located and I rode over 10 of them. The bobsled lets say the guys needed a sports cup to endure some of the roughness and the Batman chiller I always said was probably eqivalent to doing a quick round with Mike Tysen when it went in reverse. Rolling Thunder was so awesome and ran in reverse also.

Chiller was such a presence at that park. The imposing stature of it and the roar that came out of it made it seem like it was alive. I am so glad I had the opportunity to ride both of them, Batman especially. Going on the inside of a top hat makes the inversion so much more intense and then you got to do it backwards. Still my #1 roller coaster.
@tigerrocks5039 күн бұрын
How hard was it to get on the Batman side? Since that was closed more often
@Storo219 күн бұрын
@ my first time ever on the Batman side was a funny story. We were on the Skyway heading towards the east side of the park. My back was to Chiller when we heard it launch. My cousin screamed ITS THE BATMAN SIDE and I quickly dismissed him. He turned out to be right and it was my only time on it. Batman’s train shortly was painted red and put on Robins side. So to answer your question it was incredibly rare!
@Beethoven11118 күн бұрын
@@tigerrocks503 After 2003, near impossible. It only operated Fright Fest of 04' and for a few weeks in 06' before never operating again. Despite reports otherwise, if comparing the sides objectively (disregarding the "rarity" of the Batman side credit), I'd say both sides were equally as fun and intense.

I remember being too small to ride Lightnin Loops and Rolling Thunder. Had to watch my mom and aunt go on together. Eventually I rode Rolling Thunder and remember absolutely loving it. Also, Viper, quite possibly the worst roller coaster to have ever existed. I remember riding it once and it gave me one of the worst headaches I've ever had. Scream Machine was FIRE!! Yes - you pretty much have this right. Big Fury just never opened. The coaster had some defects that the park just did not want to deal with. Also never rode Little Thunder or Big Fury. Did get on Alpine Blitz when I was a little kid. Also rode Lightning Loops a few occasions as a kid. Last rode that in 1988. In 1992 when I returned to the park it was being disassembled and Batman the Ride was beginning construction. One loop went to Flags America but was torn down prior to flagging in 2000.. The other Loop went to Frontier City. Rode Rolling Thunder a few times as a kid. Rode this regularly as a young adult once I got annual passes in 1993. Was rough for an out and back woodie. Was to be RMC'd but structural issues did not allow this so it was torn down because renovations were too costly. They announced this closure in July 2013 and closed it after Labor Day that year. Bobsleds I never rode while at Great Adventure. This closed July 31, 1988 and I visited the park two days later and it was already being disassembled so they could put Scream Machine there. I got on this coaster finally in 2006 at Great Escape Lake George. I missed this in 2001 being this coaster closed at 6 PM daily. That is now gone and Bobcat Woodie sits there now. Also did not get on Shockwave while at Great Adventure. Was at the park August 1992 and line was too long and my dad and I had to leave by 6 PM that day. I was still quite young then and figured I would get another chance to ride but did not get back to the park till May 93 and IT WAS GONE.. This was located where Right Stuff Building now is. They took this out September 1992 UNANNONCED. It last opened Labor Day September 7, 1992. By the 12th of September the ride was being taken apart. This coaster was first at Magic MOuntain 1986 to 1988 and was BLACK. It was painted blue and white at Great Adventure and lasted less than 2 seasons. It was then moved to Astroworld where it was painted yellow and white and called Batman the Mistake I mean Escape. This coaster was a HEADBANGER. I rode it in July 2000 at Astroworld. Horrible ride. Also got on Ultra Twister that same day at Astroworld. Viper was horrible. Got on that a few dozen times including opening day in 1995. That first year the coaster had some long lines but by 1998 the lines were minimal. It was closed the entire 2000 season and most of 2001. It was open off and on in 2002 and 2003. In 2004 it was quietly closed with no announcement and by the end of the season it was all gone. Scream Machine was a head banger. I rode that doens of times. Employees knew it was closing by the 2009 season. We all thought it would be gone in 2010 but we were wrong. It opened that spring. Still they stated closing was iminent but not announced right away. Then right before the 4th of July it was announced it would close July 18 in favor of Green Lantern. Lantern was a good ride initially when it got there. I did ride this in 1999 at Kentucky Kingdom as Chang. When that park closed they grabbed most of their rides and sent them to other parks before their landlord stopped them. Kentucky Kingdom reopened in 2016 I think. I visited in 2020 and it was a huge improvement. Teh park is better under its current owners. 90 percent of the rides there are all new and not from 6 Flags days. Green Lantern was a good ride initially in 2011 but it gradually got rougher. Chiller was a headbanger on both sides but changed the trains in 2002. After that the ride was much nicer. Been on this coaster a few dozen times. By 2005 one side was closed almost all the time. The other side was open as often as not. This ride closed also with no announcement. It broke down June 2007 and never reopened. Then that October it got taken down along with Freefall, several flat rides, and Movietown Water Effect. These rides were removed very quietly. Dark Knight was built where the Water Ride was located. The whole area between Dark Knight and where Flash is built was closed down and did not reopen until 2017 when Justice League was added. I did ride chiller several dozen times. So Shockwave, Chiller, Viper, Ultra Twister, Freefall, and Splashwater Falls all closed over the years without announcements.

Lightening Loops was my very first coaster - I was in elementary school when it opened - and tall enough to ride. My brothers took me on. I remember that long line all the way up to the top where you loaded - and I was terrified! Even worse was the fear of going backward. However, when it was all done, I wore it like a badge of pride LOL I remember when Rolling Thunder opened, as well. That was another fantastic coaster, These days, Nitro and Jersey Devil are my two favorites.

For those who don't know, Shockwave went to Six Flags Astroworld as Batman: The Escape, and when that park closed, the coaster went to Six Flags Darien Lake where it sat across the street for several years until it was scrapped, apparently it was damaged during shipping and was unsalvageable.

I never rode Chiller or Scream Machine, but I did get to see them operating during my first visit to Great Adventure in June 2007. I liked Green Lantern once I learned the right riding position, but I can totally understand why others found that it didn't live up to Scream Machine. It wasn't that good of a fit for the park, as it came long after stand up coasters had fallen out of style, and was redundant with the other B&M loopers. They would've been better off with a wing or dive coaster there, or something with a launch, as Chiller had been removed by that point. At that point though, Six Flags was bankrupt, so they just did whatever was the cheapest to say they added a new ride.

The way of SF handling Kingda Ka’s closure was extremely baffling since they never announced it closing and not allowing riders getting their last rides in the first place when the rumors started surfacing. I could say that this was similar to how CF closed Volcano, however the difference was that it was deemed unsafe to continue operating and still closed it without notifying the public, Ka’s on the other hand was more sadder as it never got the ceremonial send off that it deserved cuz of SF closing it down with no announcement in order to not “piss of the general public and have a bad reception” over it.
@RomeoX9119 күн бұрын
This is a double-edged response, but here we go... first, shout out to the crew that manned Kingda Ka in its last days. I honestly got to go towards the end and got my last flash pass rides in and I can say that the ride always seemed to work while I was wanting to go on it. However, over the past three years, (and especially once the flash pass system completely switched from having the watchband to everything being on the phone) you routinely saw that Ka would be the one ride currently experiencing delays. I think, letting Ka go out under regular attendance and normal ride amounts helped get it across the finish line. Had you made a huge news spectacle of the whole thing, and it broke down, well isn't that embarrassing. Finally, the amount of people who would try to sneak cameras, go-pros, phone recorders onto the ride for "last ride nostalgia" would've been a nightmare had it been a huge event.
