@ it’s part of the 75th. Special Troops Battalion. Back in the 80s and 90s every (almost) division HHC had a LRSU type detachment. Larger unit structures had military intelligence battalions with entire company’s devoted to LRSU. Most of that went away with the advent of drones. I think humint is coming back in style now that gwot is over and we are looking at larger scale conventional adversaries.

All have their place on the modern battlefield, though I liked to play Devil's Advocate when I still served and bring up the fact that the ever-expanding Special Operations community makes it not so "special" these days. We had a 37F (PSYOP) as well as an 18C (SF Engineer) in my company when I was a Drill Sergeant. The 37F, despite enlisting before PSYOP became a packet MOS, had anger issues (likely stemming from PEDs, since he was a bodybuilder and one of the few that would come in at 0300 or earlier to get a workout before our 12-18-hour day started). It was fun messing with him, though I refrained from calling him a POG (an underdeveloped Drill Sergeant in his 20s called the 37F by that title in front of a new class of Trainees and almost got smeared across the concrete). I liked the guy, but he was a lot different than us 11Bs and 11Cs that made up the bulk of the company. The 18C, on the other hand, would sometimes vent about the lower quality Soldiers getting handed their Green Berets and needing extensive retraining once they got to their Group. As a naive younger Soldier, I thought Delta required a Special Forces MOS. Not too long into my career, I started serving under some who'd been in the 1st SOFD-D. It makes sense that a lot of operators start out in 75th Ranger Regiment. Green Berets are more of a force multiplier, while "Batt Boys" are direct action and usually work in conjunction with Delta. My lowly Leg Infantry (101st) self was part of a cordon for a Delta mission in Iraq in 2003, though, when they were going after one of the main guys on the Most Wanted playing cards. The Delta guys moved and acted like precision munitions, with each step seeming to have been rehearsed. We had some 19th Group (National Guard) SF guys tag along on some missions in Husaybah, and they just seemed too relaxed. As Saw Gunner, I was carrying a lot of weight and pulling rear security, so I fell behind my squad a little. One of the SF guys, walking along without even having a hand on his weapon, told me they'd cover the rear so I could catch up. I turned around a couple of times and there was no rear security, just the couple of 18-series and their interpreter walking along and chatting. A couple of nights later, one of their patrols got blown up, with a Green Beret losing a leg and requiring dust-off. Their "mad minute" was impressive, at least. I was on rooftop guard and heard the explosion, followed by smaller explosions and automatic gunfire, before watching the team moving back to the compound and hearing the MEDEVAC come in. Anyway, we all serve a purpose. While I always had my qualms with Group Support (stemming from the prima donnas in 5th Group at Campbell, especially at Air Assault School), even the support MOS' in 75th Ranger are required to earn their Tab, to my knowledge, meaning that the DFAC NCOIC and Motor Sergeant made it through a far-tougher school than I ever attempted.

I believe it's important to recognize that CST and psyops is just not elite status. Throughout GWOT, every unit on the ground engaged with the local population. While many videos highlight special operations, it's often the conventional units that are doing the critical work. A more balanced perspective is necessary.

There is a lot of overlap in special operation forces. The only ones doing something different is SOAR. Yeah, the psy-ops doesn't work, but somebody has to run a country after the U.S. takes it over and that's where civil affairs shows up. I doubt anybody else in the military knows anything about infrastructure on a country scale.

Civil affairs is the only people in the military that know anything about infrastructure on a country scale. Once the country is captured, they take over the government. I doubt the rangers will be set in to repair all the infrastructure that was blown up while taking the country. Special operations doesn't mean elite. Psy-ops just tricks the military into thinking they have value.
