Something *does* come of Sae-byeok crawling through the vents - she sees that the next game involves boiling sugar, which, along with seeing the shapes, allows Sang-woo to realise what game they're about to play before he selects his shape (and lets Gi-hun pick a bad one).

Another flaw: when people get shot, the blood is squirting out of the exit wounds. However, no one standing behind the unlucky person is ever being hit. In one episode, soldier nr. 29 (who is actually a cop) shoots his 'collegue' in the head at point blank. The camera is behind the guy who gets shot, and you see the blood ejected from the back of his skull. Minutes later, another bad guy digs the bullet (that has no rifling!) from the dead guy's forehead with the tip of his knife. This can only mean one thing: the bullet travelled around the globe, hit the guy in exactly the same spot, and then lost its velocity. This is common practice in Hollywood too. Someone gets shot through the head in front of a mirror or window. The blood splatters all over the glass surface. But no trace of the bullet! In some mysterious way, the bullet drops to the ground after leaving the back of the head, but before hitting the glass. Or it just evaporates. Who will tell?

everything was great until the breakdown of episode 8 lmao - the frontman says "if they see YOUR faces, you're dead", neither he nor Il-Nam or the VIPs are included in the count. - i don't think the reason why Gi-Hun went for Sang-Woo was for an advantage in the game but merely for revenge and spite - only two were meant to play in the last game and (since it's all a show for the VIPs to enjoy) having two childhood best friends fighting for their life (or better, to kill one another) was much more entertaining for them than simply let Gi-Hun attack (and probably get killed) by Sang-Woo outside the game field - Gi-Hun and Sang-Woo use to play this game every day when they were kids, as shown in the first episode so he obviously knows the rules - the reason why he didn't do anything for a year is quite clear to me since the man spent a whole week watching 300+ people die instead of him, the last one being his childhood best friend who killed himself in front of Gi-Hun because he wanted his friend to have the prize money so he could help both of their mothers, only to go back home after all this trauma and finding out that his mom, the *actual reason* why he went back to the games, was dead and probably died alone thinking that his only son abandoned her. I think it's pretty clear the reason why he's not going after his daughter, the only person he has left and the ONLY person in another continent, far from the shit show that's his life right now and the danger it can bring... that didn't make any sense. I do disagree with the finale tho, he should've gone to the States to see her - the thing is, we don't know if he's going to look for the detective that believed him, because we only saw him not getting on the plane. maybe he does look for him (or even better, he'll end up seeing the detective on the news since he's been missing for a year) and maybe that's how he'll realize that that man was the one guard asking him about names. he'll go to the same police station where they'll be looking for the detective and they'll work together to find the organisation. there's no way of knowing, but this is much more likely to happen than him going after them by himself wtf. did I like the finale? no. did I scream how stupid it was going after them alone and not caring about the daughter? yes. but I also realised shortly after that he wouldn't do it because it doesn't make any fucking sense for him to do so - the fight that broke out was "Pillow Fight" which has no rules nor fixed start, it just does when the first hit strike. no need to set rules and start the game if the game doesn't have any Most of the other things were spot on! Great job :)

I think I was a lawyer in my former life…because my brain tends to immediately recognize loopholes that could be exploited, in shows and movies.😆 So this was what first stuck out to me in SG and invaded my brainhole; *the vote out.* *(The Loophole}* people don’t need to die, for you to get their portion of money!! There were 456 players = *up to* a total of 45.6 billion won in prize money, (if everyone but you died). However, after voting to leave- not all of the players came back… We know they need the majority of players to return (to restart the game) and the frontman said they had something like 93-97% of the players returned-and yet.. Seong Gi-Hun still won the full prize amount of 45.6 billion. So unless “continue monitoring them” actually means “kill them off to keep them quiet” (which would make sense…if it didn’t make zero sense at all) It appears like going home and not retuning, still technically counts as being “eliminated” and that money gets added to the piggybank. So here’s my question… This has been going on for DECADES and it’s pretty safe to say, that the vast majority of players are less than “scrupulous” -like the gangster formerly known as *snake-face.* You’re telling me, that in multiple DECADES, no slimy criminals/gangsters won the game (or anyone WORKING there), recognized the opportunity for gaming the system and figured out a way to “stack the deck” with a buttload of their minions-so they could swing the vote to exit (giving them the opportunity to get all of the most valuable/useful people out of the game and safe)-then send all of the disposable lackies back in to play for the money (which would now be 100’s of millions of won heavier-without actually having to lose any of those valuable members). So if one/some of your people somehow actually got the prize, it would still be exceedingly valuable to split multiple ways(especially if you can successfully pull that off a few times).🤷♀️🤔

The one thing that bothered me was that I don’t recall the game organizers stating that only one person could win (in fact, it implied that the prize could be shared), but the game is clearly played out with the only outcome being one person winning it. Furthermore, the rules for each match are deeply flawed, unclear, unfair and contradictory. The organizers claim that the game is 100% fair to all players and that it’s possible to survive if the person does his or her best, but it’s not how it’s played out. What about those who got the umbrella-shaped cookie instead of a triangle? Or those who are forced to allow a fellow player to be killed in the one to one match without knowing that outcome? Or what about the match with the glass ceiling in which the first players are clearly at disadvantage to those who come at the end?

A lot of these can be explained by the humans just being human. Humans being irrational and contradictory is a realistic thematic intentional part of the story. So too, a lot can be explained by corporations being corporations. The organization going back on their word is random and pointless. Because what they are doing is representative of the ruthlessness of capitalism, which can be random and pointless. Just as bureaucracy isnt perfect, it has ridiculous flaws, that is reflected in the organization having issues like security flaws. Police not performing due diligence against the organization makes sense too considering corruption and ineptitude of policing powerful corporations. It feels like you are looking for people and groups to make a certain sort of sense that we do see in some fiction, but lots of fiction shows a more chaotic and conflicted world intentionally.

Whilst you make some good points about the real world, stories are not supposed to be exactly like the real world. Stories can carry messages, and make points of all kinds, but for the message to come across, consistency is a crucial factor. By all means, you could have a story randomly starting out somewhere and end up in the middle of nowhere, which would be like the real world sometimes, but what's the point? That's something that sets stories apart form the real world; they're supposed to have a point. Otherwise, why bother?
@MohamedRamadan-qi4hl2 жыл бұрын
I hate to tell you this but nothing in capitalism is pointless or random every thing is calculated to gain an advantage in the market, overcome competitors, reduce costs, taking safe ways to make profits. Some of these can be disasters and end up miscalculated or be effective {but seems cold blooded} in staying competitive in the free market. But never pointless or random, quite frankly I find your criticism and the show criticism of capitalism rather weak and sometimes backfires like that scene in the glass bridge where the rules of the game suddenly changes

Most of the things you mentioned are wrong or misinterpreted. 2:29 Gi-Hun went to see his ex wife and ask her for money after talking to the old man. His ex wifes new husband offered to give him money in return for him not bothering his daughter and ex wife anymore. He smacked him in the face while his daughter was watching realising that even though he is back from that hell, nothing changed and things proceed to get worse because of his lack of money. So him not talking to the officer was consistent. He was disappointed and toying with the idea to return. 2:55 Her beeing awake led to something. She pocketed a knife and managed to sneak it in allowing her to crawl into the vents in the first place. 3:56 Her sneaking around helped her to get a easier shape in the later game. 4:26 The main group teaming up and winning is a meta issue and is not a error in Squid Game itself. We all know that the protagonist isn't gonna die. Within the episode itself, it was more than reasonable that they won. 4:38 They keep their paper archives on a remote island that only they own and know of. Pretty safe to me. 4:46 You point out that he has been found out but nothing major happens because of it, even though only a few scenes later, after they climb down the ladder to make the delivery, he gets a knife pointed at his throat. 6:49 While it would have been a good idea to try and hit the glass panes before, they are to far apart to make that possible. 10:00 He doesn't spend his price money becuase he feels tremendous guilt for killing his childhood best friend. How he can live without touching it is somewhat of a fair error. We as the viewer can only assume since the squid games lasted for quite some time that the thugs assumed he ran away or died of somewhere. 10:36 It's a methaphor. The old man believes his views on the world are right and to prove it to Gi-Hun he starts that little bet with him about the man on the street. Before the clock rings, the man gets saved. The clock ringing is signaling the old mans passing so before he died, he saw that his nihalistic views are at the very least not entirely right.
@CultureVultureMedia12 жыл бұрын
I think you're correct on all accounts - in principle. I would say that the execution/presentation of these points in the series is the real error. For example: the glass panes game is clearly supposed to require players to take a chance, but the way it's presented is stupid, because we can see the distance isn't that far, as well as the metal beems being perfectly fine to walk on. They could have easily solved this by saying that the metal beams will electrocute you if you touch it, as well as simply putting the glass panes further apart. The same goes for the other errors. You can see what they're trying to do, but it falls flat because of the way it's executed.
@Squary942 жыл бұрын
@@CultureVultureMedia1 Yes, I was thinking that the glass panes game was one of the weakest moments. There were many opportunities for cheesing that one. @@Squary94 Fair enough. Agree to disagree I suppose. I would say some of your points are asking a bit much from the viewer to simply accept, but some are more debatable, I have to admit. Not talking to the officer... I don't know, seems like they presented a lot of resentment towards the games on Gi-hun's part. To suddenly change his mind because he's proud and needs money, over reporting the deaths of a hundred people. Not convinced. Sneaking around in the vent leading to a better shape is kind of redundant. Nothing says she would have definitely failed a more difficult shape. Lots of screen time for a tiny/insignificant detail. Teaming up for the tug-of-war is problematic, because the show is for a fact making a big intense drama out of it, but at the same time, there is no drama, seeing as you know who'll win. They want to have the cake and eat it too. Better to throw in a couple developed characters on both sides to make it genuinly interesting. I guess the paper archive is not that big of a deal. Not the end of the world, I admit, but stood out to me nevertheless. Having a knife pointed at you is not a lasting consequence, at least not in this case. Didn't affect the story at all. The glass panes are not too far apart. Gi-hun not spending money to help the families of the victims because he's depressed with guilt doesn't make sense, seeing as he not long after has all the motivation in the world to go after the organization, which even comes at the expense of not seeing his daughter. So the show is suggesting that doing something you clearly want to, at no expense, is harder than doing something you might hesitate to do, at a great expense. The execution of Il-nam dying is really strange. I still don't understand whether he saw the homeless man get taken care of or not. It was dubious at best, and Gi-hun outright asking his dead body "did you see that" doesn't make things clearer.

We don't have to take my issues to the extreme. I'm saying that he "made no attempt" to get his daughter back, which is very different from magically piecing everything together. As well as not spending the money. If he truly cared about the people that died, which really seems to do (seeing as he goes after the organization in the end) - why doesn't he share the money with their families? It's the most obvious thing to do - and he alreadt did it with Sang-woo's mom. Perhaps his depression might explain it, but it's not really brought up as a reason by the show. Too much is asked by the audience to fill in the gaps themselves and accept, which is the overarching problem with Squid Game, I'd say.

For me the biggest error was the fact that number 001 voted against continuing the games. Sure, it makes sense then, before we know he is like part of the organization but in retrospective it doesn't make any sense whatsoever in my opinion.
@CultureVultureMedia12 жыл бұрын
True. The vote was in his hands after all. To be fair, he's been around long enough to know that a lot of people will return, so it wasn't really like he gambled. Perhaps he felt like it was unfair for him to cast the deciding vote, seeing as he's an insider. But this brings me to another great error in SG: they leave so many gaps for the audience to fill in themselves by making arbitrary assumptions. It would have been nice if they actually told their own story, instead of leaving half the story untold, haha!
@Gunplabro2 жыл бұрын
By showing the carnage, and putting it up to a vote, those who return do so willingly, absolving Il-Nam of any guilt in their demise. They knew the risks and chose to return.
@crater0442 жыл бұрын
Actually......it does make sense, given his character. It's because he KNOWS that some are going to come back. He's offering them a choice: you can either leave and not get the money or stay and play. At this point, most of the contestants are scared out of their mind so to resolve the situation, they do the vote and he decides to vote against staying. The way I see it: he's playing a game with the contestants by voting against continuing. It's because he KNOWS that the allure of the money is too strong for a lot of these people and that most will come back if offered the choice to come back and put their life on the line for the money, especially now that they know the consequences. I have no issue with this sequence, it makes perfect sense with his character.

The police not getting involved is not that uncommon ( on the take, lazy or just don’t care to be bothered). The rest of your points line up. For me, it was the Korean watered down version of the Hunger Games. Poor, lower class people play deadly games to entertain the elite, rich folk, hopeful to get prize in the end.
@CultureVultureMedia12 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I think that plot point is fair in a way. But there's a lot to be asked when tons of people have come out of that game, as winners or not, but no one has informed the police. They could have had a bit about how the organization bribes the police at least. That would clear up a lot of issues.
@auntielou36102 жыл бұрын
@@CultureVultureMedia1 - I agree. Is it that the writers felt the audience would understand why the people would be less than.? Why involve the police if it is clearly waste of time.? Higher POV- was never considered. IMO, they relied on current culture norms. I think some people would respond

@@auntielou3610 Agreed. Honest question,because you have to critique while you're watching these different shows. On first watch do you watch with an open mind go enjoy it or pick out the negatives straight off the bat? . Good content btw ,recently found the channel
@CultureVultureMedia12 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words! I'm glad you like my content :) Great question. I have grown increasingly cynical over the years, like you do, but I always go in with an open mind when watching something for the first time, hoping for the best. I watch because I want to be entertained, not because I want to make videos complaining about everything. But when something has potential and squanders it, I feel like it needs pointing out. In the case of Squid Game, I couldn't make it past the first 5 minutes, but because it was so talked about at the time, I gave it another shot. It was worth it, as pointed out in the video, but alas, there is so much wasted potential as well, with gaping holes in the narrative, asking the audience to fill in the gaps by assuming a bunch of things etc. And honestly, I feel like they get away with it because it's "foreign", or "exotic". People cut it way too much slack simply because it's a fresh break from a lot of western bullshit being pumped out, but in itself Squid Game is not that great. Just look at it. The purpose of this channel is to make people reflect on our pop culture. It's nowhere near as good as it could or should be, and I only do this because I know we could do so much better. It might seem like all complaining, but it's hopeful complaining at least. Squid Game is a glorious opportunity to tell a compelling story, but they screwed up. Game of Thrones needs no further introduction. The Queen's Gambit is a good example of TV being done right, which I also have a video on. I'm a creative person, and I produce things too. By looking at what others do, for good or worse, I learn. I then share what I see through this channel, and conversations like this is a great end result. Thank you again for the question, it's healthy for me to reflect on these things, and I hope my perspective gives you cause to reflect as well :) If you feel like having more conversations like these, feel free to join the Discord server! discord.gg/crGmf8hR

Great review ! The inconsistencies in the S.G. that you point out so expertly well done by the way, seem to be very typical of many K Dramas and can be very annoying, especially when it's dubbed with voice over a lot is lost in translation, which also changes the character and not in a good way. It's really difficult to find a film or series that ticks all the boxes.

The one thing with the guy who chose his wife for the marbles game actually somewhat makes sense. When they initially left the only "game" they played was one against the house and not other competitors so for all they knew when they agreed to go back they may have thought that all games would be personal challenges and once back unable to leave once it starts to progressively become player against player...

I mean, I do get it. I'm not oblivious, but that's not the point. The show is asking us to fill in a bunch of blanks by assuming things. Whilst I can certainly do that, it's still awful storytelling. @BB-uk3gq3 жыл бұрын
I saw it weeks ago but what I remember was the honesty of a man’s strength being superior to a woman’s in team selection was great to see. That’s taboo nowadays. Also, the level high scale level of violence without being a slasher is really enjoyable from a tv show. I don’t remember the last time I saw something with a body count that high. I loved the way the show captures the simplicity of childhood games in such an intense atmosphere, with such high stakes, which in turn makes childhood games fun again in my memory without the straight insertion of memberberries. It’s almost like I appreciate that those games really were just good old fun as a child opposed to playing for your life. I liked that there weren’t too many grandiose camera shots of the actors. There was a some woke stuff i’ve erased from memory and it’s predictable as heck while being super cheesy. The show isn’t fantastic and is heavily flawed but it’s fun and different. Regarding faults; One thing I wondered is when the teams crossed on the way to the tug of war is why no one pushed anyone off? It’d recently been established that killing each other was ok. I should establish that I enjoyed your video very much.
@CultureVultureMedia13 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much for your support! Yeah, true, male streangth being a thing - without being overcompensated by women being disproportionally capable otherwise is pretty unique, sadly enough. I think that, in the tug-of-war, they just pulled together (literally) and survived an intense situation, so they'd be too exhausted and emotionally drained to want to kill the people they just risked their lives to survive with, you know? I also think the whole thing about them killing each other was not properly motivated to begin with, as mentioned in the video.
@BB-uk3gq3 жыл бұрын
@@CultureVultureMedia1 I was thinking about when the teams cross like at 1’02” of your vid, I thought someone might push an enemy team’s player off. Like Player 101 pushes off the last player in their line. I guess they could have got shot for it though and the underdog status had already been firmly established for the audience so it’s unnecessary. No big deal. Thanks. Cheers!

@@CultureVultureMedia1 this show is a direct commentary on capitalism, and how the elite get away with shit, like how the police just doesn't care about their crimes, and also, the police guy who infotrated the game is more like a journalist, who doesn't get to tell the truth at the end of the day, because the media doesn't care to publish it, because of profit, the fact that he didn't want to spend the money afterwards is also reasonable, because what's the point of it after literally killing people for the reward, it's like having a conscious, I do agree some of the points you brought were story and directoral mistakes, like how the brother's face wasn't ever shown until the very end, or the masks at the end of the game when the elites left, maybe the get to see each others faces? But we don't for the most parts, also, it is reasonable to think that even though the game is called squid game, the elites who come to watch are different from the ones who did the years before, or the guy who asked the question was a new guy... But overall the show did a very seamless and amazing job at painting a capitalist society, and commenting on it. @@statisticallyspeaking2067 You're talking about the mesage and philosophy of the show. The problem is the show has a lot of flaws in it's way of making these points. A lot of the time, the show wants to have the cake and eat it too by having the organisation be stoic and fair (if cruel), but in the next breath the games are rigged and the first point is contradicted. The brother-reveal was also just an awkward failure at dramatic effect, and a missed opportunity to explore the manager's character more. These inconsistencies do not take away the messages of the show, it just takes the bite out of them :)
