I F** with this video a lot bro it might be my favorite yet. I've had people ask me why I draw /study so much lately and that my art is "good enough". i tell them because until I'm as good or better than "insert x artist" then no it isn't. My competition is Marvel and DC and no one ever had made a name for the self with half a heart

Real refreshing to hear someone acknowledge Marvel and DC for their artists. You can learn so much by studying and trying to keep up with some of their greats. Emoji faces and manga speed lines are cool but there is a lot of stylistic quality in those two companies. Jim Lee !! 😁🔥
@artbyhartman

@@bobbysmitty1628 couldn't agree more, there is a lot I love about the stylization in manga. Esp the way they draw actions, but western comics have had some of the greatest who ever did it. Lee, Sylvestri, Capullo, Madureira. Those guys and more were and are incredible artists and set the bar very high.

@@artbyhartman Absolutely. I like them both. I especially appreciate American comics for the storytelling (Dark Knight Returns, Injustice, Batman Year One, Marvel Civil War, etc). I appreciate manga for the stylization and the willingness to be non-conventional.

@@bobbysmitty1628 theres a lot to appreciate in both. I've never been an anime stan. But a good story is a good story and good art is good art. The medium is just a vehicle. I love things Vinland Saga and Something is killing the Children equally. All the best stories really know how to get the most out of their medium to make something compelling

@@artbyhartman Me either, to the anime stan part. I actually really like throwback manga such as Kamen Rider, Crying Freeman, and Lupin the 3rd amongst others. The art wasn't just a bunch of speed lines. That's why I bring up the use of emoji faces and speed lines, because those are common characteristics of popular manga today. And no, I'm not some guy trying to relive my glory days. The titles I mentioned were published before I was born. I just went back and viewed them. I digress. Yes, it is a medium and I agree with your take on being receptive to many artistic expressions. 👍👍

I think the real word everyone is looking for is discipline. Sure you could put 1-2 hours of your day aside and do art because you feel like it, but there is a person maybe 100km away from you doing the same thing, but spending 6-7 hours a day trying to improve their craft, not because they feel like doing it, but because their discipline to the craft has turned into a passion. You just gotta make it a habit man. I used to play video games 4-5 hours a day three years ago, and only spent a couple hours a week really doing art. After sitting down one day and really thought through what i want to do with my life, i told myself cut the games out and put those hours into you passion, which is art. (I have been drawing my ehole life but never realised that i wanted to become an artist). Doing so was hard, but with discipline you manage to push yourself through it. Best way i could explain it is the same way when you first start at the gym. Sure its a hassle to go to the gym every day, but after three weeks it kinda becomes a regular day to day thing to do. Same can be said about art, you just gotta do it for how ever long you feel uncomfortable with it, until you get comfortable with it. Keep your heads up guys. Hope this helps someone.

It's funny cause I always thought I wanted to make a comic but didn't think it was possible because it was "too hard and my skill level isn't there" or I didn't "have the time". I thought about my comic idea for years and years while playing hours and hours of video games. I finally had this gnawing feeling in 2022, like what am I getting from these games, maybe I should draw my comic. Now that I'm deep into it I have the first 3 issues drawn, 2 printed, and the next 13 issues written. It really is just about how bad you want it, now that I'm working away at it I think about it more than video games and it feels good to have a tangible product even if it's not a blockbuster. I still find the time to play games when I can but I prioritize my art nowadays. If anyone is interested, I have the first 2 issues available on my Ko-fi shop: ko-fi.com/joelryan/shop

I don't really understand the question either that much. Some people's brains are more wired to a strong work ethic, but it's still also something that can be trained with the right amount of discipline. The question probably comes from people who grew up well-off and had everything handed to them, therefore they lack the motivation to create anything for themselves. That's just my take on it

To DD mark. I know that I’m just a single person amongst the large audience you’ve found and the even bigger audience you seek. And that its not reasonable to put to words anything to you. But somehow I feel that the correct interpretation of what you are saying is that Its actually quite necessary to speak personally to such a pointed, accurate and insightful thought. That when you Say “you don’t want it bad enough” you actually truly and certainly mean ME (and those many, many other Me’s that are in a similar situation). So I MUST answer back and the only real answer is to say that I amongst the masses at this crazy “trying to be an artist”, I am the exception. I WILL be enough- I will deepen my delusion, deepen my own efforts. I’ve taken to spending close to every other night doing art. while doing a separate soul sucking job. I think its one of the best innovations I’ve had because it allows for truly serious grinding even when the day doesn’t allow for it. My challenge to all other readers is to remember that you can only be a job by being an entrepreneur and you need to be a good one; that actually sells themselves as an interesting brand instead of the scammy hacks that sometimes prey within our community. I think scammers are just the representatives of scammy thoughts, which are everywhere and represent the “chit chat” “fantasy” artists you’ve talked about in other vids. Anyways My answer is you ARE wrong about ME (keep in mind this is a bit disingenuous- you speak to a large audience and you certainly AREN’T wrong that most of them will fail) but that in my mind, at least we ARE colleagues cause I agree with you completely on all points in this video. In fact its really well done and resonated with me strongly. You are far ahead of me but we are both clearly working towards success. The encouragement of the spectators really in a way means nothing. There is only analysis of where we lack and an inexhaustible hunger. That’s for putting words to that. And I don’t think that anyone Can every hear too much of the pointed truth that are way too willing to be comfortable rather than being great Jason Oliphant

I definitely disagree. Delusional by definition means you are believing in something entirely outside of the realm of reality, in most essences it is a fools errand. I think you underestimate your abilities and overestimate Those of the ones you admire, Something I used to do when I was younger. You are not only an extraordinarily talented artist but you are also officially published. The likes of Toriyama ( Who in my personal opinion was more lucky than great) and Yusuke Murata ARE your peers and rivals, You are in the same position they were when they started and you are in a position where you have the ability to achieve great things just like they did. And don't for a second think You can never surpass them, Has anyone great Ever at any point in history broke into an industry knowing they were going to be great? When Creug mccrack created The Powerpuff Girls, He was praying that the show at least got a few T shirts. Look at them now they are one of the biggest International properties ever. When toriyama started dragon boy ( The original one shot that eventually became dragonball) he saw it as just another one shot shonen jump was about to cancel. Look at it now. Even herahiko araki had to face constant rejection before he finally struck it big with Jojo. I would like to think of artist like you who have achieved things despite impossible odds As persistent optimist. Don't call yourself delusional because that discredits all of the greatness you were able to accomplish. Delusional means you think you are the greatest thing to happen to art since ink and paper. Persistent optimism is believing you can accomplish greatness no matter what.

Self confidence matters. It's nice to have people who believe in you, But always remember the most important person who has to believe in you is yourself. Never fall into the trap of believing art is a talent, Producing art is a skill, anyone can learn to do it. If your parents talk you down, Use that as motivation to become better so when you eventually and inevitably gain the skills you desire you can show them that everything you worked for paid off.

6:50 this is were i seriously lost it. Up until then it was good advice, almost really good but that was one HELL of a goddamn jump in logic. The reasons someone might not want to spend enough time to complete his work might not just be because they are "not meant to be a creator", maybe they doesn't enjoy the story they set out to make or maybe they needs are in need of a rewrite. The more passion you have for a thing the more you'd want to do it, yes, but the lack of passion might be due to someone's, method, or type of story or way of drawing or SO MANY OTHER THINGS... NOT just because they are "not meant to be a creator".

@@Riku_nkmr Oh yeah I can see that happening. Guess it depends on the person and their ability to keep long term attention to one subject at a time. But having long hours like a nurse your brain can certain wonder back to other subjects especially ones that you are working on.

It also depends on how you measure success. Winnie the Pooh as a franchise dwarfs any manga you can think of on a global scale, and he's just a bunch of basic shapes. Create something that resonates with you and is fun. Trying to out master someone's technical expertise can be a goal, but it may not need to be YOUR goal. Find your lane.

No Winnie the Pooh is an utterly worthless ip that hasn’t seen a sale since the 1970s. Demon slayer and one piece and jjk and chainsaw are much bigger.

@@reginaldforthright805 🧢🧢🧢You must be young, or you must be trolling lol. Disney's Christopher Robin the movie just made $200 million at the box office in 2018. Go look up biggest selling franchises in the world right meow, and then let's have this convo. Winnie the Pooh as a franchise is worth almost $80 billion. Your top manga aren't hitting that as a franchise. If you wanted to make an argument, you should've said Pokemon not the others you mentioned. The point being, something simple and enjoyable can be massively popular and are usually not displays of artistic flexing. So everyone has their lane, take this as encouragement lol.

You don’t have to be delusional, you just need talent, genius, and hard work. But I can see that delusion could help with motivation maybe.

Don't know that I agree with those first two, but #3. Hard work beats talent and genius every time. Even if you have all the natural gifts in the world without the discipline to do something with them they won't take a person very far.
@reginaldforthright805

@@artbyhartman well you need both. But since many people work hard, I think talent is the differentiator. It seems like a lot of the art community is obsessed with denying talent, but that belief is actually insulting to anyone who fails - they just didn’t work hard enough.

Dude this has helped me recently with my mentality on what's going on with my self. I thought my delusional self was being a deterrent from what could actually be a livable life. Like you lived in a poorer lifestyle. Now I'm working hard to get that bank as an artist. shooting for game dev art. Thanks for the pick me up.

Hey man i have a question when you draw objects like chairs tables or even complex things like pianos and chandeliers how do you go about it because for anatomy we study the parts but for objects you would need to study the anatomy of them to under stand how to draw them but i feel like nobody does that and just wings it

I'm not DD Mark but I am a competent artist, and I have submitted my work to published artists receiving positive feedback. Draw shapes and lines every day. Draw forms, 3 dimensional shapes. One of my mentors is a professional architect. He would agree to draw shapes, everything is shapes. Also, draw from observation so you can build your reference data base. Once you are comfortable drawing actual furniture, you'll begin to understand how to stylize it. For example, I sucked at hands. So, I started drawing real hands. When I took that over to my cartooning I was able to make the hands more believable because I knew the structure of the hand from observing and drawing it. I knew what knuckles were the largest and could identify which fingers are the longest to shortest. All of this makes your drawings more recognizable when you stylize your characters. Your stylizing based on recognizable features so learn those features. Shapes, forms, perspective, and observation will help you. I'd recommend those. Good luck. 👍👍
