I have been trying to get out of the diatonic chords in my improvisation for years- i mean i have watched other music theory videos and I understand them on an intellectual level but none of them are as straight forward as this. This is the only video that got me moving and start practicing. So thank you profusely, and hope you can do this for other progressions as well (but no pressure! this is helpful enough!)

IV-V-iii-vi is a chord progression that feels like you feel in love with some one and wanna stay with the person forever as well you will never give up and has also alot of tension which make it really perfect for the style of anime

1:09 - 1:20 is absolutely beautiful. Wow.
@randommodnar1669 Жыл бұрын
So basically: - Vary the chord qualities - Chord inversions to get linear motion - Use different ways to build tension (secondary dominants, half step motion, etc.) Very cool!
@toptentechtipsthingsricegu8822 Жыл бұрын
half step motion is most often a tritone sub btw, if you didn't know this yet! :)
@pizza2262 Жыл бұрын
no, that is not true. a tritone sub is clearly defined as a dominant 7th chord with its root a tritone away from an existing dominant 7th chord, and half step motion is a general term that could be analyzed in melody and harmony
@toptentechtipsthingsricegu8822 Жыл бұрын
@@pizza2262 no man tritone sub is when you replace a dominant with a dominant chord a tritone up/down. so in a ii V I that V would essentially be between the ii and the I if you transpose it by a tritone, same works with secondary dominants obviously (if you also don't know what that is please look it up so you can understand this video). yes half step motion is a general term but in this context most half step motions are in fact tritone subs. this knowledge is instrumental to actually understanding what's going in this video. if you're going by just the fact that it's half step motions there's no use for you in this video except if your goal is to blatantly copy the chords.
@ankokunokayoubi Жыл бұрын
the very last one is more like a minor 2-5-1 into E minor chord
@sanikku59 ай бұрын
Half step motion here is mostly generated, if it isn't already done with inversions: - A half step down with tritone substitutions of (secondary) dominants. (Notated as subV/"..." in the video) - A half step up with leading-tone diminished sevenths. (Notated as vii⁰7/"..." in the video) - Passing chords, perhaps borrowed from parallel minor or other parallel modes.

I think this one is a really uniquely concise reference material and you should create similar ones about different progressions and their variations. Some technical suggestions about the visuals: It would be a great if the arrow or some sort of selection box would follow the chord being played inside the progression to further help the viewer understand what's happening. The currently played progression could be more zoomed in to be more readable on smaller devices. Chapter markers on the video for each variation would be useful. That being said it is already a cool video and if there is a next one without any of the above suggestions implemented it would be still great. Thanks!

Using the V/vi instead of the iii gets me every time. Its like you're taking the iii and making it the dominant of a new key as though you're going to modulate, then pulling the rug out and hitting us with what could've been an ordinary deceptive cadence otherwise.

I wonder if japaneses actually get tired of listening the pregression, like we in the americas and europe got tired of the I-V-vi-IV one and now when someone plays it everyone is like "duh, that progression again"😅I imagine this one is more like anime and background music raher than actual pop, rock, Hip hop, etc.

is there any explanation or theory behind the Db∆ - G7 one?
@YetAnotherCoverChannel Жыл бұрын
This is called modal interchange or borrowed chord, i.e., borrowing a chord from a parallel mode (parallel means with the same root, e.g., C Dorian and C Lydian). In this case, the chord progression is in C Major (Ionian), and DbΔ is borrowed from C Phrygian.

In addition to what the video creator has already said, Dbmaj7 is just Fm with Db in the bass. In other words, it's basically an extra colorful minor iv! Everybody loves the minor iv. Absolutely any variation of a chromatic line going 6 - b6 - 5 sounds beautiful.
