There's an element of phoniness in 90% of what he does, and I'm not just talking about him acting like a goof to hide being a villain. He's acting a part even when he's being a grandiose villain, giving evil speeches, etc. There are only a few times in the series before The King and the Core where it feels like he's speaking from the heart. "That's the thing about Friends. The more you love them the more it hurts when they go..." is one of them
