Initially I had a problem with that, too, but maybe she didn’t act on it because it was earth kingdom affairs that didn’t necessarily disrupt the balance of the entire world. We see that Roku threatened the fire lord because he was trying to invade other nations and that Kuvira was challenged because she was trying to take over the United Nations land that was once considered Earth Kingdom territory.

When you first see Kyoshi create the island, you think it was a mistake that her eyes weren’t glowing the entire time. Then you read the books, and realized she only needed the knowledge in that brief flash. Kyoshi had no problem bending huge hunks of earth with her own power.

The crazy thing is that Kiyoshi never stays in her Avatar form with the glow in her eyes like other Avatars do. She just enters and comes out of the Avatar state and yeet everyone around her. This is actually the best use of Avatar state. She knows she is the most powerful and the most vulnerable in her Avatar state so she enters and instantly comes out of it. I guess this is the reason she lived for 230 years.

A year late, but it's not really that way, Szeto and Kuruk do it in the Avatar State explanation flashbacks, Roku when battling the volcano and Aang when rising the sea to put out the fires and when chasing Yakone in the future, it has more to do with mastering the avatar state in a way that they an use it consciously, drawing power from it instead of letting it use them like when it's triggered as a defense mechanism, as we've seen with Aang and Korra.

I think she didn't use the Avatar state for bending power because if she did she would have remained in the Avatar state for a longer time to draw the power needed. She just tapped in very quickly, that's why I think she just used it to look up experience, information or knowledge on what she has to do to properly split the peninsula from the mainland. The physical act of seperating the two by bending was performed without the Avatar state.

Roku is actually one of the only Avatars to have the appearence of when he died (Kuruk did too) Aang died at 66 years old, the version of him Korra comunicates with is the appearence from when he was around 40 Although I don't know how Kyoshi looked like when she was 230, that was possibly not it

im pretty sure each Avatar is shown as what they imagine themselves as. Yangchen looked 20-30, Aang is shown as 40ish. Kiyoshi is probably anywhere between 20-100 I guess. Roku is himself when he died. Kuruk looks like him when he was 20-30, probably after his wife got her face stolen by Koh and he learned that he needed to be more involved.

The fact that she lost her connection with past avatars mean her Avatar state wont even use the past avatar experiences, and Korra only uses the Avatar State to boost her bending skills. What's kind of amazing is how much thought they put into kyoshi's character design, even as such a briefly seen character. Giving her the fans and paint, which we don't see anywhere else in earth bending culture, alludes to her parents and her link to Airbenders. Though, come to think of it.. it's possible, and probable even that they went for classic motifs of select Chinese culture (what the earth nation is based off of) and then created a story to back they up. Regardless, the characterization of Kyoshi and how it's reflected in her design is just *chefs kiss*
