They've handed in their resignations, but the navy won't officially acknowledge them until something happens. That's good to know about SWORD members still being official members of the Marines and being eligible for promotion. It makes sense that they would have to hand in their resignations in order to fully join SWORD, but that the Navy wouldn't officially acknowledge them until they were needed. I agree that Koby is probably being held back because of the time he publicly spoke out against Akainu. Akainu is a very powerful and influential Marine, and he is not known for being forgiving. It's likely that he is still holding a grudge against Koby, and that he is using his influence to prevent him from being promoted. However, I think Koby will eventually be promoted, despite Akainu's objections. He is a very talented and capable Marine, and he has the support of many powerful people, including Garp and Sengoku. I'm sure that he will eventually prove himself to be worthy of promotion, and that he will become a valuable asset to the Marines. Note: I'm excited to see how Koby's character develops in the future. He has the potential to be one of the greatest Marines of all time, and I'm looking forward to seeing him achieve his full potential.

Oda said Marines from HQ are supposed to be 3 ranks stronger than their counterparts from other Blues, so that might explain the inconsistency.

5:40 There is actually a major difference between an officer of the marine headquarters and an officer from marine bases! While Nezumi is a captain his actual rank would actually be a simple lower lieutenant if he was an officer of the headquarters. Here is Oda's quote from the sbs of vol29:" The Marine Headquarters are like the super-elite of the Marines. These men who appeared at the assembly in Volume 11. These are the men in the Headquarters' "Junior Officers" ranks but if the former Base Captain "Axe-Arm Morgan" or "Captain Nezumi" from Nami's home were there, they would be among those men. The Headquarters and standard Base ranks are about three ranks apart, you could say. A higher Captain at a Base would be a lower Lieutenant at Headquarters, and a Commander would be a Junior Lieutenant".

I was not aware of that difference in rank between Marine Headquarters officers and Marine base officers. It is interesting to note that Marine Headquarters officers are considered to be the "super-elite" of the Marines. This is likely because they are trained by the best instructors and have access to the most advanced resources. Marine base officers, on the other hand, are responsible for maintaining law and order in their respective areas. They may not have the same level of training or resources as Marine Headquarters officers, but they are still highly skilled and experienced Marines. I can see why Nezumi would be considered a lower lieutenant if he were an officer at Marine Headquarters. He is a very capable Marine, but he does not have the same level of experience or training as some of the other officers at Marine Headquarters.

fun fact: in sbs 107 Oda just cleared up his explanation of Sword. Its members have NOT officially resigned or been disavowed by the marines… yet. Their documents for official resignation are just prepared and always at the ready, because Sword members are only disavowed once they’re caught.

I doubt he did. Maybe since he was a supremely gifted strategist, maybe Sengoku was given mildly higher freedom than normal because the elders trusted his judgement, so Sakazuki was looking at it from the perspective of looking at Sengoku, then when he got the job was treated like any other fleet admiral in history was? Or Sengoku was exactly the same and Sakazuki just didn't understand the level of bureaucracy involved as an outsider looking in. He's too driven and aggressive to have taken that job knowing he'd be shackled for the rest of his career.

To be fair, pirate crews are all separate entities, and may not always have the freedom to go to doctor, like with Nami on Drum island when the inhabitants wanted to kill them. So having a medic immediately on hand, or even another pirate doctor to turn to is essential. Meanwhile, there probably are basic medics for marine crews, but like a real-life army, they’d probably deflect back. E.g. only massive war ships would have a full infirmary, or if we look at non-canon marine forts like G-8, then it’s normal for a ship to retreat to a marine base for treatment if they suffer mass casualties. Marines probably also have more freedom to just show up at random towns and demand healthcare, as long as the town or kingdom falls under world government jurisdiction

X-Drake is the leader of sword, the Kanji on that reveal is the same used for Dragon as the leader of the freedom fighters, which literally means leader in command. It's not the same used for the rank of Captain in the marines. Also in chapter 1080 he literally appears as the man in front of the silhouette of sword with Grus and other member on the side. So X-Drake is presented as the highest ranking Marine in Sword unless there's a secret leader.

There is a bit of a distinction between blue captain in one of the seas and a captain of headquarters which is s grand line operating captain. The former seems to be more about ability to manage the force and keep the seas safe, while the grand line sets the extra requirement for power.

Being a vice-admiral definitely does NOT put you in line to be an Admiral. Both new Admirals were outsourced. It seems more like you are promoted until failure in the marines. Then the Admirals are considered a different branch, much like Squad Zero from Bleach.
