He’s too tight with himself. The challenges die right away because things like the background, cappy, fludd, the cursor, and touching an object with multiple colors are counted. The background never affects gameplay in any way so isn’t really an object. Cappy is not Mario so if cappy touches something it should be fine. For fludd the same logic as clothing should apply because it’s always on the character. The cursor is not Mario or even an extension of him, instead being just a cursor so it shouldn’t matter. And if you touch red in a yellow challenge it shouldn’t matter whether or not the other side of the platform is yellow because you didn’t touch it. There’s my rant.

Also, for SMB1, Coin blocks and coins switch between yellow and brown, so those 2 things should be allowed to be collected when they are brown. Also, koopas in underground levels (also SMB1) are brown, even thought koopas are normally yellow, koopas in 1-2 and 4-2 are brown. We are playing from the game's perspective, not mario's perspective.

I think it might work better if you decide that for every object you choose the dominant color as well as having only interactable objects count, so unless the flowers move when you move past them, they don’t count.
