I think a sequel to this could have things like starlight indium nvidium and ferrite core
@adora_was_taken3 ай бұрын
- starlight rewrites the lighting engine to be significantly more efficient, but as of 1.20 that isn't necessary anymore - indium adds support for the fabric rendering API to sodium. many mods that have blocks with custom rendering or modify the game's rendering require this to be compatible with sodium's optimizations. (as of sodium 0.6, the fabric rendering api is supported now, so indium is obsolete) - nvidium expands on sodium's backend to add support for mesh shaders. mesh shaders allow the gpu to generate geometry instead of relying on the cpu to supply it, which takes a long time (comparatively). mesh shaders are currently only supported in opengl by nvidia gpus, hence the name nvidium. - ferrite core saves memory, but the explanation is a bit harder. most of its changes involve reimplementing data structures in more memory-efficient ways and making certain caches smarter about what they store.

Not a mod, but running Linux can give you a significant 1.5-2.5x fps boost, Flatpak is the easiest to install but only does around 1.5x, whilst the tarball/RPM/DEB package directly from Mojang’s site gives you 2.5x the performance compared to Windows. Not sure why, but seems to be related to the open JDK implementation instead of the standard Java found on Windows. Could also be less CPU or kernel bloat, as we are all well aware how Minecraft is CPU bound.
@_mosscat3 ай бұрын
did some experimenting with this recently, from what i can tell it's mostly because of Linux' low RAM usage. Minecraft for me uses 2.5-3 GB RAM, and if you've got an 8GB laptop with Windows 11 that memory just isn't available. Might be a similar story for CPU usage but I didn't look at that closely

Due to many of these mods optimizing vanilla in different ways, due some of them stack together without causing bugs or having performance worse then if only one was active?
@zqria3 ай бұрын
You can use all of them together besides Optifine, and you will get good fps

Wouldn't the "Entity Culling" mod be made redundant by sodium, as sodium has entity culling as a native feature? Or is the entity culling in sodium just inferior
@zqria3 ай бұрын
I would assume that entity culling had something that sodium doesn't as many people use both. I'm not quite sure what it is tho
@commander34943 ай бұрын
You are right, the mod's entity culling is much more aggressive than Sodium from what I've been told, leading to less mobs being rendered unnecessarily. However it also does some unsafe asynchronous accesses to the world which can very rarely produce random crashes. (I'd still use it though, I haven't experienced this myself, ever)
@noxvera3 ай бұрын
would be cool if you included mods like immediatelyfast and modernfix
@Palladium42Ай бұрын
You should have mentioned Embeddium and Embeddium plus, they are both forks of sodium and allow you to customize setting just like in Optifine with the sodium code, I always install tham and always have 1,5-3 tmes more Fps tham without
@wolfrust04 ай бұрын
Fun fact:optifine still uses jar modding which is an oudated method and they're just too lazy to port them
@blrryface4 ай бұрын
Fun fact: you're wrong. There are still mods that use jarmodding, and OptiFine can be loaded as a Forge mod.
