He had to be the head coach of the worst team the NFL had ever seen for two years and nearly went winless in two straight years. He tried to motivate the team by doing little magic tricks, and even wrote a fight song, sung to the tune of, "As the Caissons go Rolling along." The roster he overhauled went 1-15 the year before he got there, so yeah it needed overhauling. A few seasons later in 1983, the Saints were seconds away from winning the division and having their first winning season in franchise history before a Mike Langsford field goal beat them on the final play of the season. Hank Stram or JD Roberts had far worse tenures in New Orleans

Frank Kush: I've never seen this repeated in any retelling of Elway's holdout, but at the time there was a story published by a sports journalist that the reason Elway refused to play for Kush was that Kush was an abusive college head coach. The specific item in the story was that he had his players in a wrestling room, paired them off, and required them to attack and subdue each other -- he didn't care if they injured each other. Jack Elway had heard about it during is time as a college coach. Quite similar to a nonsensical scene in the Val Kilmer movie Spartan.

You're 100% correct about Flores. What you failed to mention was that he was paid to lose. The owner wanted out of Seattle in the worst way, and having a losing team was his solution to breaking his lease. TBF to Flores, I don't think he cared enough about the team to even lose. Walking up and down the sidelines, he always looked like he was thinking about what kind of wine to have with dinner than the game.
