Also keep in mind that the AUR should be your last result for software unless the devs endorse the AUR package.

I never ever had any issues with AUR packages besides them just not working. Using Arch is the best way to force yourself to learn how to troubleshoot Linux and how it works. After 5 installs you'll know most of the Linux ecosystem.
@terravida3332 ай бұрын
@@Caellyan I said it like that because I'm cautious about total noobs. Flatpak is still a safer option than the AUR and what I have problems with is the U... User... If you want to stay safe it is necessary to flip through the make file to see if anything fishy is going on. It can also wrack your system if the thing you want to install is not that popular and somebody made a mistake (like KDE themes...) sooooo yeah. AUR stuff usually just does not work but the moment you step on AUR you are walking on good but crackling ice that may or may not break. The "better safe than sorry" mentality especially when there is any chance to meet with new users is the best solution if we want Linux to be expanded.

Honestly arch is pretty good once you're somewhat used to linux, I'm partial to NixOS because the package installation (the main feature) and being able to rollback your installation are both pretty great, it saves a snapshot whenever you add apps or anything and it's all just a config file for app installs and stuff. It's also gnome by default so it's pretty easy to start with, but not as much as ubuntu or pop os
@aemogie6 ай бұрын
Oh hey, found the NixOS user!
@aemogie6 ай бұрын
Also I should mention, I wouldn't agree that NixOS is a beginners distro. It's immutability and reproducibility, brought to the customisation of Arch. There are efforts like SnowflakeOS to make NixOS truly usable for non technical users (Which adds a GUI NixOS config editor, as well as a GUI frontend for package management) The choices are between that and flatpaks. And I'd argue either way, you're missing out on almost every single benefit NixOS provides for a desktop use case. Even more so when home-manager is involved. NixOS is an amazing distro, but definitely not meant for people who "just want to use their computer". It's for tinkerers (in the case of desktop use), and sysadmins (in the case of enterprise/server use), and most regular users are neither.

Assuming you have enough storage, you can split the drive into multiple partitions straight from windows, and then install Linux on the new partition. It’s really easy to do and can save you some money. Edit: Also, don’t be afraid to start with Arch. You’re dual booting, so nothing can happen to your windows install. It might be confusing but installing arch is a very good way to get familiar with command lines and the terminal, and you should be used to using it for Linux. I had so many people try and talk of dual boot, but honestly, I am absolutely in love with it, having the ability to do both without needing to rely on wine or wsl2 is just so nice, and modern laptops reboot in like, literally 5 seconds flat, and I'm not switching often enough to care, and if I think I might, I can still use wsl2 or wine

Here is how you can be cheap, AND not rock that unactivated windows watermark! 1.) Create a new text document anywhere on your computer, it doesn't matter the file location. 2.) Inside the text document, type/copy and paste these strings of commands (without the quotation marks obviously.); "@echo off taskkill /F /IM explorer.exe explorer.exe exit" 3.) Once that is done, save the text document and rename it to "Activation.bat", no quotations. You'll know it worked if the icon changes to 2 cog wheels. 4.) Last, run Activation.bat as administrator, and then restart your pc, you HAVE to restart and run as admin or it WILL NOT WORK. 5.) Once your computer boots back up, no more watermark! You can delete Activation.bat if you want, it won't bring the watermark back. [DISCLAIMER: THIS IS FOR WINDOWS 10, IT MAY NOT WORK FOR WINDOWS 11]

@williamhabberjam4105 ай бұрын
You should probably try it out on a Virtual machine first, dual booting is great but wouldnt recommend it for testing out OS's
@SeeJayPlayGames3 ай бұрын
it's necessary for *really* testing it. You won't be able to run commercial Windows games in a VM under say, VirtualBox because it's not a kernel-level VMM. You'll need something a little closer to the metal for real testing of SteamPlay and the like. But yeah, basic desktop use and basic native Linux games like KMahjongg or whatever, sure, you can get your feet wet with a VM.

Steam Deck’s OS is based of an Arch Linux Distro, sooooo my first true experience with Linux was Arch haha. And I can see why people say not to start with it. There are sooooo many tutorials, GitHub pages, forums, and YT videos for Ubuntu based distros, and the one’s for Arch are there but they are very much meant for those who are “in the know” when it comes to Linux. Suffice to say it’s been a ton of fun getting Lutris/Wine to work in order to play Overwatch on a Steam Deck haha

Been of Linux since 2021. You don't need programming knowledge to use it. A basic command in the terminal is easy and a must. I tried Kubuntu, Manjaro, and Pop_os, and now I'm on Ubuntu as my daily driver. I can play Windows AAA games via lutris or steam.

Linux gaming has come on very well in recent years. If you're willing to learn a couple new things and you don't play any competitive online games that use malware-level anti-cheat, it's very likely you could make the switch with ease.

It’s fucking crazy to think about how prices on windows keys have doubled or tripled in 4yrs. I remember buying a windows activation key from cdkeys back in 2020 for around 14 with tax. Now it’s 29.99. I’m glad Linux is free and the gaming experience is getting better, in the future, we might lose the ability to purchase it and it’ll become a subscription service
