This video really hits the spot, because I struggle with this problem a long lately. Having to play on completely different pianos each time is really hard and frustrating. If you achieved something on one piano, doesn’t mean you can do it on another.

Things like this are why I am glad I do my own piano regulation. It's always in prime shape. I don't perform anymore because of health, so I thankfully don't have to worry about the disastrous world of non-maintained pianos! :) Obsessed with your content like usual! :)

Such a good lesson! I‘ve had to really learn this hard since I started playing organ, where every instrument doesn’t even have the same number of keys, the registers are completely different, and the instruments are often in varying states of disrepair or just because of weather fluctuations causing the mechanical coupling to expand and contract. Us keyboardists really need to be adaptable!
@tbraun8417 күн бұрын
Yes. And then there's the switching between the organ and piano or increasingly electronic piano which throws me off. But organs are so idiosyncratic one to the next.
@devenestes323417 күн бұрын
@@tbraun84 absolutely! Since I mostly play organ nowadays I notice it feels really weird to play piano now. I get used to it relatively fast again but it still takes some adjustment. But you are absolutely right, the difference between organs is unbelievably huge!

That’s the exact reason I started playing guitar, because I couldn’t carry a piano with me everywhere. I always admire pianists, upright bassists, and drummers, because in order to learn their respective instruments, they either had to lug them everywhere or deal with potentially inferior instruments at wherever they were at. I didn’t have the patience for that 😂
@Tehinstrumentalist14 күн бұрын
Its worse as an organist, we have no choice but to adapt and every organ is completely different. Sometimes we dont even get a chance to see the instrument beforehand and don't even know how many keys we'll be dealing with!

I've been asked by a friend to play organ for her wedding. I asked about the organ, as I'd heard it was in poor condition. "Oh, no, it's excellent ". Firstly difficult to even get to practise on, then first time, the Church secretary opens up, shows me how to access the organ (key, light, on/off). And she says "the Choir doesn't work, nor do any pedal stops apart from this one ... and the Swell trumpet and tremulant don't either". A nightmare - I discover that the capture pistons work only if they're in the mood, there were 6 jamming keys at last practice - worst was Great Middle C just staying down last time I practised. Meaning I couldn't use the Great at all. I've added 2 pages of issues to the Maintenance Book - which looks like nobody ever bothers to. Reading through the log, it shows that the Choir & pedal stops haven't worked for 10+ years. G-R-O-A-N.

I totally agree! I'm used to practicing at home with a piano but I've found out a benefit of going to play with public pianos. they're all different, some of them have keys that are slightly out of tune, some of they are squeaky, some notes are straight broken at times... as you said, some notes can be really loud compared to the others too! So in using different pianos, I am forced to adapt to each of them and become a more all-rounder pianist :)

I played for an event recently where the piano keys were very stiff, the piano tone was way brighter than I'm used to, and I ended up having to hold down the una corda pedal for my entire performance because the piano was too loud for the space. It definitely impacted my performance! Every piano is so insanely different, and we rarely get really nice ones for events.

That was exactly Keith Jarret's challenge when recording the concert in Koln. The existing piano was a disaster, and he had to find a solution on the spot. The path he found was to explore the unique expressive characteristics of that particular instrument.

In a different universe I had myself recording custom-made improvisations to different pianos (being paid handsomely by the piano owners due to my world renown, of course), but only beginning after I had studied the quality of each note on the piano and grouping them as such, the information to be used during the improvisation. What resulted was a work that was custom made to that particular piano, and it would not work on any other piano, not even on that piano few days later after it had gone ever so slightly more out of tune, never to recapture that day's nuances. Here, I would find all of the squeaky notes and do something with them as a group as part of the piece...

Posture - most important is that the bench not be too low. The forearm should be roughly horizontal, and the wrist not twisted. An extract from a google article "Alignment of Arm, Wrist and Hand With your arms hanging at your side, notice that the forearm, wrist and hand have a natural, easy alignment. The fingers curve naturally, without any effort. Bring this natural, easy position to the keyboard."

It isn't necessarily a grand that's needed. My experience is that grands need more constant voicing and regulation than uprights - as long as the upright is set up ok to start with - and not "grandma's old piano".
