Ash Ketchum lacks the bond on his Kanto Pokemon he recently caught so he decided to release not one, not two but three of his Kanto Pokemon permanently (Not counting Charizard-Lizardon and Pikachu and the rest of his Pokemon that stayed because they came back at later seasons of the anime). Others from Johto to Alola just stayed or left behind then return to Ash Ketchum temporarily when wanted to participate in battle or having a screentime at later seasons or episodes from Johto to Alola probably (except for his traded Ambipom, Solgaleo and Larvitar).

this is just my opinions please don't get angry with me folks but.....too me both Goodra and Naganadel became the guardians of places that don't need guardians with the latter and Solgaleo being victims of the show insisting on making special Pokemon OP beyond all reason, yes they are like that in games too but the anime too me at least took it a step too far at least in the games they have their flaws but the anime largely ignored them. Yeah I was not a fan of the writing on them the early parts for Goodra was fine but Poipole just existed too me too be cute and sell plushies it didn't feel like he contributed anything then he evolves offscreen, another annoyance of mine, returns for the Kukui battle then leaves too again be the guardian of a place that doesn't need a guardian. but ike I said these are just my opinions please don't get mad at me

Ash never caught Solgaleo. They formed a bond when Ash raised him as a Cosmog. I wish Solgaleo showed up in Aim to be a Pokemon Master and let Ash catch him there maybe that would of been a more exciting end for Ash.
