doesn't seem criminal. hose + recharge + probably .. some kind of drier or filter or something. standard a/c stuff in a professional setting. anyone who sees that bodge is going to think the previous owner was a crackhead :/ also surprised you didn't attempt to replace the transmission pan. but i guess at that point, $50-250 was probably more than you were interested in putting into it. same goes for disconnecting the steering wheel button. but maybe that has some weird tie-in to the airbag or something additional

I did have a certain amount of 'dude just fix it the right way' moments watching this tho.

My grandparents still use a 1990 VW with roller windows (no buttons, just rollers to roll up and down the window), and zip ties that keep the wheels to the car (that part I don’t understand). It experiences the same phenomenon as old people he gradually begin grunting when they get up the older they get.

The prices for spare parts from VW are just insane, even here in Germany. For my T3 Bus they wanted €400 for a single front brake disk w/o mounting. At BMW, they exchanged all four disks and all the pads of my old E30 316i for €500, labor and material included.

As someone who grew up in south florida with no AC this seems like the perfect kind of car for me. Mostly fully drivable, but a lot of nuisances and annoyances that make people want to not buy it. Hopefully I can find one like this someday near where I live instead of a state over, but hey, what a story!

Unusual video, very enjoyable. It’s the story of every car I’ve owned, you get attached. I’ve got a 2008 Subaru Legacy now (the lower Outback) It’s really good. Subaru Symmetrical All Wheel Drive is unreal. It’s thirsty but good in an apocalypse. I hope you got a Subaru for the abundance of load tie down points alone!

Well where can I start. The cover for the bottom of the engine is not to protect it, it's for aerodynamics and fuel consumption, the hood is not seating right because it got mounted by a SUV and it's not meant to be sat on either. Oh, and it's not an off-road vehicle so if you're going to take it your off road you're going to hot rocks and damage components. Maybe replace to Transmation pan as without taking it off, you have no idea what has been damaged, thus the 5th gear noise. Personally, I think it's done really well to survive you. By the way, the taillight you said was loose is a headlight.

Over here there are plenty of Golfs, so it is extremely likely to find one one a junkyard with whatever part one needs. That way my father kept his Golf alive for 20 years. Not sure about Jettas though.

It not the hose, its the drain, recovery of the coolant, and after replacing hose, putting new coolant in, The coolant can cost several hundred dollars per kg. Environment protection costs a lot

wow, it’s a good car if you maintain it well, I got a 1.4 tsi with DSG tyranny that failed recently and got it fixed, it’s a DQ200 mecha, changed the steering rack to new, it’s a Bosch steering rack, 4 absorber, new front disc and 4 new brake pads and countless of speed sensor … thought of getting a new car before all these happened but no other sedan car came close to this Jetta, guess I’m stuck with this

Rocket cars get abused lol. My 2016 Fiesta ST has been rear-ended 3 times, hit a deer, sideswiped a pole, and been hit in parking lots more times than I can remember. Also I've put over 180,000 miles on it in 5 years. Interior is demolished from transportating fiberglass rockets.

Years ago I owned a VW Passat. Fun Car to Drive. Not fun to get serviced. Even simple maintenance items cost much more than any other vehicle I have ever owned. Will not get another VW product just because of the cost to maintain.

You must not have received the letter from VW, because of your multiple moves. Was your air bag light on the instrument panel lit? The wire harness that connects the air bag and the switches on the steering wheel is called the "clock spring". Some years ago, VW sent out a letter advising owners of an extended warranty on the clock spring. In May of 2023, VW sent out a second letter, advising owners of 2010-2022 VWs that the warranty on the clock spring had been extended to 15 years/unlimited miles, *IF* the car was showing a lit air bag light, *and* steering wheel mounted control malfunctions. If you had an air bag light, and the control weirdness you describe, and the shop found the problem was the clock spring, VW would have fixed it free.

Honestly….your problems seems like norm car problems 😂. If the hoses to the ac is the only problem, someone is going to be happy to buy it off you. My 2010 Chevy back door is stuck locked on the inside which is a better problem to have, my ac went out twice out of the 14 years, and many many problems under the hood and wear and tear. Sure, it’s cheaper to fix but I wouldn’t call it reliable if you aren’t someone that stays on top of repairs. Thinking about getting a newer VW Jetta but everyone is saying no😅
